Guest guest
Does anyone know if ayurveda could halp a severly depressed 16 year old female? All pharmaceutical meds and counseling has seemed to have failed (have tried for 9 months). She still has frequent crying spells and has attempted suicide twice. Her parents don't know what to do anymore (except worry and pray). Any advice or advice on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Guest guest
Dear Kristine The topic of depression and anxiety has been already covered at length in several posts earlier, the recent ones being Message No. 1549 and 1564, which are part 1 and 2 of a lengthy post. You are requested to read the material given there and also the links given in those posts. OLder post are also likely to be useful. IN order to go through group archieves, go to home page of the group by link: health.ayurveda/ and click on the button 'Messages' on the left side of the screen. You may keyin the number of message you are looking for in a search window or navigate through several messages using buttons at top or bottom of list. Incidently, it is suggested that any new members joining the group may also see the archieves first before posting their querry. Members are requested to 'Reply' a querry from group website itself, so that stores the reference structure. Our's is the fastest growing ayurveda group, other than being largest. Hence, slight adherence to this discipline will make it more interestong. REgards Dr. Bhate

Guest guest
Hi Kristine you will need to look at the other causes, incl: 1. what's her diet like? 2. does she ovulate/menstruate normally? 3. what are the social pressures (school, peers) and family dynamics? -recommend an elimination-challenge diet, removing sugar, dairy, flour, deep-fried foods etc. from the diet; ensure adequate quality proteins and omega-3 fatty acids -investigate other environmental influences, e.g. off-gassing of carpets, wall board; electromagnetic fields from appliances, incoming electrical supply -investigate her hormonal status, i.e. get her to keep a menstrual-symptothermal chart (graphing her basal body temperature every AM and marking this on a graph) - you would be looking for a mid cycle spike to indicate ovulation (which occurs under the influence of dopamine, which tends to "lift" the spirits); alternately, GSDL (www.gsdl.com) has a female hormone saliva test that is quite accurate and be ordered by her practitioner; also, a thyroid and adrenal panel is probably a good idea too; depression might be caused by a relative deficit in any of these organ systems -tactics to alleviate social pressures including going on a holiday (probably somewhere sunny and warm), changing schools or perhaps even homeschooling; playing baroque or indian classical music; infusing aromas such as lavender, ylang, jasmine, and sandalwood into the house helpful supplements would include: -a vitamin B complex, 100 mg daily -a good multimineral -deep sea fish oil, 6-10 g daily useful "antidepressant" herbs: -Damiana, Milky Oats, Ashwagandha, St. John's Wort, Barberry to correct deficiencies in: -thryoid: Barberry, Guggul, Kelp -adrenals: Ashwagandha, Siberian Ginseng, American Ginseng, Licorice -ovulation: Shatavari, Chasteberry, Dang gui, Black and Blue Cohosh flower essences: -Rescue remedy, Wild Rose, Olive, Scotch Broom, Gorse While teenage depression is not uncommon, I really recommend however that all of these recommendations be implemented under the supervision of an experienced herbalist or Ayurvedic practitioner > > Does anyone know if ayurveda could halp a severly depressed 16 year old > female?
