Guest guest Posted March 23, 2004 Report Share Posted March 23, 2004 > Dear Group, > i want information on the herbs celous & forskohli, its > latin name, usages etc. kindly send it to me. > thanks, > kk > dear kk Coleus forkskohlii is the genus and species name of "Makandi," a herb of relatively minor importance in Ayurveda, a member of the mint family, found in Sri Lanka and south India Coleus forkskohlii specifically isn't mentioned in any nighantu I've seen, and thus there are no traditional uses of C. forkskohlii (i.e. you would have to survey the ethnobotanical literature) Coleus forkskohlii has undergone some investigation for its benefits in bronchial asthma, congestive heart failure, glaucoma, psoriasis, hypothyroidism and hypertension, and has been introduced into practice and popularized by the naturopathic community specifically, C. forkskohlii contains a diterpene called forskolin that is an activator of adenylate cyclase, leading to an upregulation of cyclic AMP, enhancing tissue metabolism. supposedly, this leads to: an inhibition of platelet aggregation an inhibition of mast cell degranulation a relaxation of smooth muscle in arteries and lungs an enhancement of the strength and rate of contraction in the heart an enhancement of insulin secretion an enhancement of thyroid function an enhancement of the breakdown of fat reduces intraocular pressure I have no experience with the herb at all, so i cannot validate the claims above many of these claims are excessively enthusiastic and not based on tradition, and hence, cannot be trusted.
