Guest guest
Hello people a technical question for the vaidyas... the Chakradatta makes reference to Madhuka and Madhooka (i.e. in diacritical notation the "oo" is a "u" with a macron) my understanding is that Madhuka can be a synonym of Glycyrrhiza glabra, i.e. yashtimadhu, whereas Madhooka is the name of Madhuca indica however, in PV Sharma's translation its difficult to tell if sometimes he forgets the macron, because I've seen both Madhuka and Madhooka since Chakrapanidatta also makes use of the term yashtimadhu, is it safe to assume that when he uses Madhuka or Madhooka that he is referring to Maduca indica, or is he using both synonyms for Glycyrrhiza? thanks... Guest guest
Dear You are right about the first part. Madhuka means Yashtimadhu or Glycyrrhiza glabra while Madhooka means Moha or Madhuca indica. I have not seen PV Sharma's translation but if you have the original text it is much easier to tell. In Devnagari the first or light ookar (denoted by u in English) faces towards the left while the second or hard ookar (denoted by oo in English) faces right. (I know this is difficult, but it is also as difficult for me to explain.) It is understood that wherever the word has a left facing ookar it is to be taken as Yasthimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and wherever right facing ookar is present it denotes Moha (Madhuca indica). The same author may use both yashthimadu or madhuka or even madhuyashtika in the same text. So it is false to assume that Chakrapani Datta uses both synonyms either for Yashthimadhu or Moha. Translators may sometimes mistake one for the other. So if you want to be 100% sure please refer to the original text. If you have a doubt about a particular reference please inform the adhyaya and shloka number and I will confirm if it is Yashthimadu or Moha.
