Guest guest
Dear Vinod The ancestors sage and modern practitioners do not get tired while singing the praise of Amalaki or Rasayanas/Chyvanprasha made from it. The reasons for this will be clear in the file (By Dr. Todd) stored in group files under folder 'plant properties'. However, it is to be noted that in Ayurveda, a single herb is rarely recommended. The toxicity or otherwise some undesirable properties of one herb are balanced by those of another herb, and several herbs together produce an effect better than the individual constituents. For instance, the undesirable properties of Mucuna prurien is balanced by Aswagandha while treating Parkinson patients. Even simple laxative 'Trifla' contains three plants, two of which are 'rasayanas'. Hence strengthens large intestine in addition to laxative action. Ayurvedic approach is useful syntesis rather than analysis of chemical constituents in each herb. And elaborate purification processes for poisonous herbs to kill or make the poisons mild. Of releveance to this discussion is also the fact that, though a discovery that "combination of Vitamin C and E is a good Cardiac tonic" fetched Nobel prize for Dr. Pauling and another collegue about 17 years ago, the same combination is available in Chyanprasha or a mixture of Amalaki juice with honey, as recommended by Ayurveda centuries ago. Chyavanprasha contains major share of Vit. C and E though Amalki and honey. Please note that some producers use jaggery or sugar rather than honey. I will summarise my experience that daily 2 Amla fruit juice (lemon size fruit) mixed with 1 to 1.5 tsp of honey should be taken on empty stomach. When fresh fruits not available use of powder 1 tsp + 1-1.5 tsp honey, or Chyvanprash 1 tsp full with 1 cup milk is recommended. Chyvanprash, as available in Indian market, is with/without Suvarna Bhasma, with/without ashtvarga, etc. Start witha half dose and gradually, over 10 days, reach full dose. This avoids problems such as loose motions. The dosage is half for childeren 8-15 years. For younger ones make it 1/3 of adult dose. Please note that milk taken with Chyvanprash makes it more benificial, and avoids increase in acidity or acid reflux, as a result of chyvanprash additives, which occurs in some cases. One precaution: do not store Amla fruits in fridge. Buy fresh for 2-3 days supply. Amla powder is also available in various concentrations, potencies. One can use Amalki as a tonic in winter, while treating a variety of disorders, but each case must be studied as individual. IN general one can say that undesirable effects of Amalki or rasayanas are none as long as dosages are kept moderate, as per individual constitution.
