Guest guest
What foods does Ayurveda recommend not eating during pregnancy? I am interested in obtaining a list of foods that I should avoid during my pregnancy. Also, if there are specific foods that are particularly beneficial to eat during pregnancy, please let me know. I am a lacto-vegetarian (I do not eat eggs; I do eat dairy). Any other tips for an uncomplicated pregnancy and a healthy, vigorous baby would appreciated. Thank you! Guest guest
Dear jkp72 A file under the name Food_Properties.doc is uploaded to our Group area. You can go to home page of the group, click on Files on left side column and download to your computer. In case you are pregnant, it will be interesting to discover appropriate foods there. As a general guideline, one should choose cooling diet by choosing foods where maximum – or = symbols exist under V, P, K. Also balance your food such that finally equilibrium is achieved. Avoid pitta raising foods. Generally, these tips are well known to Grandmas, Mother-in-Laws, handed over in Guru-Shishya Parampara. After going through this table, you will discover why ancestors recommended Cow milk, goat milk, ghee. Similarly, seasame seeds are hot but seasame oil is very cool and balances all three dosha. Cucumber, melon are cool foods to be used generously in summer. Your attention is invited to bakery items, jams, sauce, pickles which are tasty but better avoided. Whereas lime juice+honey+ a pinch of salt which means Limbu Sherbat in Indian Kitchen, is most freshning drink, Lemonade is not so. Most dangerous are Tea, Coffee, Cola. Sesame seeds, being hot, need to be balanced by adding butter, sugar etc. That is why on Makar Sankranti we distribute `Til-Gul'. Wheat bread, Indian Chapati is better. Foods which are cause increase of Kapha only are generally satvic and cause no problems, until you utilize the energy by physical work. Avoid Papaya fruit and applying Henna (Mehendi) to hair. Eat generously folic acid suppliments, the best source being Indian country Cow Ghee, Milk. This subject is already covered on ayurveda. Nature alters the stomach chemistry in such a manner that the foods unhealthy for foetus will cause nausea for mother. Nature protects baby better than mother. Hence, mother should not avoid tabs for suppressing vomitting sensation. Calcium requirement is reason why pregnant women like items such as tamarind, foolers earth etc. Rice, when used as polished, looses all vitamins, becomes difficult to digest. Hence one should use unpolished rice. It is more tasty also. Do not remove skin of Potato. Boiled rice (used in Idli, dosa) requires more digestive power. Dates and Raisins which are soaked for 3 hours are good for increasing Haemoglobin needed by foetus. All long and slim vegetables (Dudhi, Parwal, Turai, Kankoda, etc) are good. All leafy vegetables are acceptable. Avoid Castor oil taken straight. It should always be taken with a cup of warm milk, well stirred, to take care of Constipation caused by foetus pressing on large intestine during later stage. It is true that when ayurvedic suppliments are used and simple natural food rules are observed, a healthy baby is the rule. Multivitamin Tabs are not needed then. Avoid junk food, fast food, stale food. Fridge is the generator of several deadly bacteria, unseen by eye, a recent research indicates. Prefer spring water or water boiled out 25%. More important than food is the happy surroundings. Hence indian customs have special pujas (7th month). Best of luck.
