> Is there something I can do to get rid of these Dark underEye

circles and wrinkles.

The under-eye circles and wrinkles are indicative of a variety of

problems. Mainly, it indicates impurities in blood streams. Under-

eye area is the indicator of "Sapt Dhatu Strength" in the body. May

be accompanied by one or more of following also.

Weakness, dizziness and quick exhaustion.

A haggard look, lined with premature wrinkles.

Eyes stripped off its shine, mirroring fatigue.

Failing memory.

Shortness of breath and palpitation on exertion.

Occasional disturbing headache.

Slow healing of wounds

Pale looking skin and mucus membranes.

The reasons which may cause this are:

Irregular hours of eating, excessive consumption of starch, sugar,

fried & fatty foods.

Toxins (ama), formed due improper movement of bowels, finding their

way into the blood stream.

Unhygienic living habits.

Excessive intake of tea, coffee, alcohol or tobacco.

Anaemia (Pandu) , especially during pregnancy, coupled with other

blood impurities.

Imbalance or fall in harmones and problems such as

leucorrhea/amenorhea. The accumulation of wastes in uterus.

The "under-eye wrinkles" is only one symptom of the body. In ayurveda

no practitioner will ever prescribe based on the single observation

such as this. If correct root cause is found, then herbal medicine

alone will restore the previous glow.

In order to get correct guidelines, please give data related to age,

bodyframe, sex, lifestyle, food habits, etc. MOre the data, better

the diagnosis.

Data provided by you is still inadequate, but being accustomed to

manage with certain uncertanity, I will try to explain in simple

language, but for a generic patient.

Man becomes tired by both body and mind due to fast and stressful

city life and "trying to achieve best" attitude. The nature

has

provided night for relaxation and rejuvenation of mental energy.

Staying awake late night causes increase of Pitta dosha and this

"out-

of-phase-with-nature" routine also increases `Vata'. 30%

of our

Cardiac output is taken by brain when you study. So, during night,

when our biological clock wants to give rest to heart and allow more

blood to liver for regeneration, we overwork heart. This shows up in

swelling on legs, near ankle bone. Also slows down liver, our

"energy

engine". Our grand parents advised studiying/meditation early

morning "Bramha Muhurta" for better concentration. Slightly

more

Ozone percentages in air at that time gives more vigor. Hence all

health practitioners recommend "morning walk".

Increase of `Vata' disturbs digestion, elimination and also

endochrine health; and this becomes vicious circle. Energy needed for

activities thus depletes "Sapt Dhatus". Vata always takes the

space

created by depleting Dhatus. Dhatus give strength and stability to

our body+mind system. Decrease of them causes increase of Vata which

causes wrinkles. The iterpretation of a senior Vaidya is: childhood

belongs to "Kapha", Youth to "Pitta" the running

horse and "old age"

to Vata, the slowing down donkey. Poor nutrition coupled with

decreased dhatus removes some "Rakta" and "flesh"

dhatu which causes

decrease of Haemoglobin and wrinkles respectively, in young as well

as elderlies. Hence, the remedy is to eat nutritous food and follow

nature. Since Vata ailments take longer time to heal, and as exams

are approaching some medicines are also necessary as aid to mind.

Instead of two, eat four dates soaked for 3 hours in 1 cup water:

crush after removing seeds, add 2 pinches(0.125 gm) of "Godanti

Hartal Bhasma". The name "Hartal" derived from Hartalika,

meaning

godess Parvati. Dates, when soaked in water, are "cooling",

and

provide `fibres', contain sugar very much liked by our brain.

Even

diabetics can take this.

Take 2 Tab (125 mg each) of Saptamrut Loha twice a day after meals to

take care of Pitta, haeadache and strain to eyes; if these are not

available, add 2 pinches of either Loha Bhasma or Kant Loha Bhasma to

breakfast time date crush. You may take one tsp of `Rasayan

Churna'

with a tsp of honey or 1/2 cup sweetened milk, or with 1 tsp

ghee+sugar, after meals. Rasayana Churva (Mixture of Giloy, Gokharu

and Aamla powders), is `Dhatu' builders, providing tonic

effects.

Take Asokarishta 15 ml with equal water after food, twice a day, if

you have problems with menses. If motions irregular due to your

routine, take "Satpatradi Churna" or "Avipattikar

Churna" 1 tsp with

water after meals. These are vert soft laxatives and reduce Pitta and

acidity to some extent.

Only once a day, if possible, at bedtime, boil following:

1 cup milk, 1 cup water, 1 tsp mixture of (Shatavari, Aswagandha,

Giloy, Gokharu, Vidarikand, Brahmi, Shankhpushpi) in equal

proportion. Boil on slow simmering heat while stirring. When 1 cup

remains, strain, add a little crystal sugar and drink. Add 1-2 tsp of

unrefined castor oil and stirr well so that castor oil taste will not

be felt. You may optionally add a pinch of Cardamom powder for taste

as well as Pitta reduction. This is `Grandma's formula for

Rheumatism, sciatica and Insomnia.

Ancient ayurvedic texts and practitioners have given guidelines for

diet depending upon season, geographical location and climate. Winter

is the season for accumulation of Kapha. Eat nutritious foods, which

supply energy to the body. Sour items like curd, tomatoes should be

reduced. Spinach soup is highly nourishing. Cereals in their natural

state relieve fatigue and provide energy. These cereals are corn,

wheat, rye seeds, maize seeds. Nutritional measures are most vital in

the treatment of fatigue/dhatu loss. Studies reveal that people who

eat snacks in between meals suffer less from fatigue and nervousness,

think more clearly, and are more efficient than those who eat only

two meals daily. These snacks should consists of fresh or dried

fruits, fresh fruit or vegetable Juices, raw vegetables, or small

sandwiches of whole gram bread. These snacks should be light and less

food should be consumed at regular meals. The snacks should also be

taken at specified timing such as 11 am, 4 p.m. "Gulkand",

just 1

tsp, is highly recommended whenever pitta is out of balance. Snacks

should not consist salted nuts. Nuts are best without salt. Drink

plenty of water so that skin is able to eliminate through

perspiration. If you are able to drink 1.3 Litres of Copper vessel

stored water as the first intake after waking up and 45 mins. gap

thereafter, your medicine requirement will be half of what is

recommended. Intoxicants such as coffee, tea, alcohol, nicotine in

any form should be stopped if possible. Fast foods wherein some heat

or frying is used are junk foods from health angle.

Yogasanas recommended: Padmasana, Sarvangasana, 10 minutes meditation

if time permits. Avoid passion, anger and restlessness. "Advanced

Yoga Techniques" teaches simple ways for meditation.

Poor

circulation to brain is also the reason for eye-wrinkles sometime;

can be remedied by daily physical exercise. Light massage using

finger tips and seasame oil or cow butter on closed eyes and around

eye-ream including eye-brows will help circulation. There are a

number of Chinese Accupressure points in this area which provide

rejuvenation when activated. It will help relieve tension, bring a

degree of freshness, renew energy, and induce sleep. The procedure

can be learnt from a practitioner or beauty parlour. Similarly cold

pack, cucumber crush pack can be applied twice a week. The

possibilities are only limited by time and energy that you can devote.

If you follow everything, walk on dewed grass early morning and watch

rising sun for 1 or 2 minutes, without closing eyelids if possible,

preferably while it turns reddish to golden. This is recommeded for

bright shining eyes. 2 cycles of Pranayama (Anuloma and Viloma) 4

times a day will also help reduce Pitta and Vata.

Follow what is possible for you, for three months and post your

experience to ayurveda so that others will also get benefit.
