With regard to the query on blocked sinuses, a panchakarma treatment

of ayurveda called nasya is very efficacious in draining blocked

sinus.

Nasya means to instill medicated drops into each nostril. This is

done in 2 steps:

1) Preparation

Sesame seed oil (Til Tailam) is slightly warmed and applied on the

forehead and temples followed by a gentle massage and light

fomentation.

2) Main procedure

The patient has to lie supine with the head tilted right back so that

the nostrils are pointed in the upward direction. A pillow or some

other support under the neck will facilitate this. Generally 2 drops

of medicated oil are instilled in each nostril. Lie down in supine

position for a further 5 minutes. Any oil which comes down the throat

should be spit out.

Various types of oils can be used for this purpose such as Anu

tailam , Panchendriyavardhan tailam etc.

Nasya can also be done with the powder (choorna) of medicinal herbs.

The powder is taken in a paper funnel and is blown forcefully into

each nostril. This is known as pradhaman nasya. A mixture of dry

powders of Shunthi (Zinziber officinale ) – 3 parts and Vacha

(acorus calamus)-1part can be used. This is considerably more potent

than medicated oil nasya.
