Guest guest
The ayurvedic classics describe a number of acute and chronic diseases affecting liver manifesting with varying degrees of jaundice. Kamala is one of the foremost conditions described in this context which essentially represent acute obstructive and non- obsructive jaundice. The texts also describe different forms of chronic hepatopathies with jaundice and certain other major symptoms like oedema, fever and diarrhoea, such syndromes have been termed as kumbha kamala, halimaka and panaki. The ayurvedic texts also describe certain other clinical conditions of the liver where jaundice is not the main manifestation, rather the liver is found enlarged or inflamed such as yakritodar, yakrit vidradhi and yakrit dalyudar. The ayurvedic texts approach the treatment of kamala in a very fundamental way giving emphasis to removal of the cause (Nidan parivarjan), removal of the obsructive pathologyof biliary tract besides detailed palliative care (samshamana). The samshamana chikitsa of kamala involves the use of various hepato- protective remedies including suitable dietary management. Various medicinal herbs such as bhumyamalaki, kutaki, punarnava, kalmegh, guduchi, bhringraj and some herbomineral preparations like arogyavardhini rasa are very effective in the management of kamala.
