Dear Brena

 

Please note that if you are suffering from weight problems the typical

Kapha-type diet prescribed in many texts may be contraindicated,

especially if high carb foods are increased at the expense of proteins

and fats. Further, the obesity you are experiencing is not the result

of your constitution: it is a disease, and thus measures to keep your

constitution in balance (if in fact your prakriti is Kapha, many

practitioners not understanding the difference between prakriti and

vikriti), the measures recommended to you will likely be insufficient.

 

Also, the food cravings you experience may be related to nutritional

deficiencies, such as chromium, magnesium and essential fatty acids.

Useful herbs include Guggulu, Ginger, Amalaki, Triphala, Fenugreek and

Trikatu

 

While many different treatments were traditionally used in Ayurvedic

medicine for obesity, all treatments were based around regular exercise

that causes you to sweat. At this point tho your weight is probably

too much to recommend all that much exercise, so you will need to lose

some weight first. I have consistently found that a higher protein and

fat diet (e.g. Atkins) does help people to lose weight. At the heart

of the obesity problem is the dynamic of insulin resistance and

hyperinsulinemia. I know that this material is hardly Ayurvedic, but I

think that the typical treatments recommended by unexperienced and

perhaps confused Ayurvedic practitioners can actually facilitate the

problem.

these foods aren't necessarily a problem, but it depends on quality.

As far as meat and dairy, eat wild, free-range and grass-fed only.

Sick unhealthy overweight and diabetic animal produce won't make you

healthy, and should be avoided at all costs. Also, look for potential

food allergens like milk that can indirectly cause food cravings.

not at all, but try to eat more in the AM, and less in the evening when

your metabolism is slowing down. A high-protein breakfast can be

particularly helpful. With this regimen, I am able to get folks to eat

only twice a day. With weight loss caloric restriction is a part of

the protocol, but isn't everything. Go for nutritionally dense foods

as opposed to empty carbs like bread, rice, potato etc. And eat only

quality foods, not junk.

Those herbs sound familiar, (I'm very new to this, sorry) I know for

a fact I was givin, triphala ... something was explained about

fenugreek and amalaki. (I'm so bad, lol) Well, I meet again with

the herbalist on Friday. I realized in re-reading what I wrote, I

made some mistakes, I didn't mean to make my herbalist sound

inexperienced, he has had a great deal of education and training and

experience, lol. I myself, very new to ayurveda.

it was recommended to me that I avoid pork and red meat, i think

because of the level of toxins...not quite sure.
