Guest guest
depression isn't really a diagnostic entity in Ayurvedic medicine, perhaps because depression is associated with dukkha, which is an inevitable result of samsara. Thus the ultimate treatment is to discover the source of dukkha, and to root this out. Dukkha and depression tell us that there is something more to life, and its each person's responsibility to discover this for him or herself. Depression has been the motivator of all great spiritual teachers. There are however certain plants which can be used to counter negative thoughts and emotions, like Sandalwood, Rose and Jasmine for example. The fragrance of these plants opens and elevates the heart. I personally do not to the idea that depression is a neurochemical imbalance, but rather, that the neurochemical imbalance is a result of depression. In terms of which plants can be used to promote a state of relaxation, it usually those which pacify Vata, e.g. Ashvagandha, Jatamamsi, Shankapushpi, Brahmi (Bacopa) etc. There are others too that aren't Indian that work well, for e.g. Reishi, Lemon Balm, Valerian, California Poppy, Skullcap etc. Breathing, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, creative release etc. are also important factors.
