Guest guest
Dear Dr. R. Lakshmanan, Thank you for joining the group and initiating a good discussion. I am sorry for the delay in replying. In a nutshell - yes ayurveda does have treatment for mental illness. Infact ayurveda views all diseases in relation to "the body" and "the mind". Just as diseases of the body are caused by an imbalance in vata, pitta and kapha, so also diseases of the mind are caused by an imbalance in satva, raja and tama which are the qualities of the mind. The diseases which are purely of the mind i.e caused by disturbance in the mind are termed as apasmar and unmad as also is grahabadha. In view of modern pyschiatry these cover a variety of diseases as classified by modern pychiatry. I would suggest you read a book "Mystics, Shamans and Doctors" by Dr. Sudhir Kakkar (also read http://www.healthlibrary.com/reading/banyan1/chap1.htm). He has covered the topic very beautifully. As you will agree this topic is so vast that a single message wont do justice to it. So we expect your specific questions which can be discussed upon. I have already answered the questions raised in your first message. So expecting your questions on the topic. Cybervaidya.
