Tibetan medicine which is close to Ayurveda in many aspects has a lot to offer

in this field. Let me recommend "Tibetan Buddhist Medicine & Psychiatry" by

Terry Clifford. From that book I have the following.

The general and basic cause of mental illness is thought to lie in leading a

life that runs counter to ones deepest spiritual inclinations and insights and

ones inherent disposition.

Acording to Abhiddharma and medical tradition there are five causes of insanity.

These are; Karma; grief- worry, imbalance in the doshas, organic poison and evil

spirith. These causes may work alone or in conjunction with another.
