Regarding Ashvagandha

Hi,

I have a question regarding Ashvagandha and it's usage.

I do not have any background in Ayurveda - all I know is from research

off the internet - which you know as well as I can be rather misleading.

If it's not a problem, I would like to know about Ashvagandha and it's

usage in treating energy-debility (weakness, tiredness, lack of

motivation, poor lung capacity (arising from Bronchitis and Smoking)).

The intention is not of self-medication (that I know can be very

damaging), but a quest out of curiosity.

I have read in places that Ashvagandha is as potent (if not more) in

treating energetic weaknesses as Chinese Ginseng. Is there some truth

behind it?

Is it advisable to consume Ashvagandha as a general tonic - an Indian

grocery store in my neighborhood has powdered AShvagandha

(manufactured by Zandu I think).

If it is safe to be used as a general tonic, is there a specific way

in which it has to be consumed (the powder)?

Thanks for your time.

Warm Regards,

Dwai.

Dear Dwai,

Ashwagandha is one of the most well known of ayurvedic herbs.

While it does have the capacities mentioned above, it is not usually

prescribed in singular form to gt the benefits you have mentioned.

Consumption of ashwagandha in low doses (1-2 gms. a day) will act as

a general tonic only if you do not have any doshic or other

imbalance in the body. As you have mentioned self-medication can be

damaging, hence it would be advisable to consult an ayurvedic doctor

before starting any medication (even as a general tonic). He would be

able to tell you the dose, duration etc based on your prakriti

(constitution) and other factors.
