Narasimha Murthy, an engineer by qualification, is a keen student of philosophy as well as lover of sport. His association with Bhagavan’s education institutions dates back nearly three decades. He has served in the Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva educational institutions in Alike and Muddenhalli and thereafter, also in Prashanti Nilayam. He is currently the Warden of Sri Sathya Sai Hostel, Brindavan. Only an avatar can reveal the mystery of the Avatar. In the history of mankind, two avatars have spoken extensively on this mystery. One was Lord Krishna, and the other is Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. In Bagavadgeeta, there are at least thirty stanzas which throw light on the enigmatic personality of a divine incarnation. We are indeed fortunate that Bhagavan Baba has revealed time and again, myriad facets of this mystery, in order to dispel the confusion in the minds of perplexed devotees about yogamaaya or the ‘divine deludelusiont surrounds a divine incarnation. windowtext"> Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba says, “Since I move about with you, eat with you, talk with you, and sing with you, you are deluded into the belief that this is but an instance of humanity. Be warned against this mistake. I am deluding you by engaging Myself in many activities with you. By My divinity may be revealed to you at any moment. You have to be prepared for that right moment. Since Divinity is enveloped by humanness, you must endeavor to overcome the maya that hides the divinity from your eyes”. Lord Krishna declares in the Geeta, “I am not revealed to all, as I am veiled by the yogamaaya. The deluded world know Me not, the unborn and the unchanging.” Yogamaaya takes from the human aspects of the avatar for a purpose. Bhagavan revels it in his inimitable style when He says, “The avatar behaves as a human so that mankind can feel sweet kinship with him, but rises to superhuman heights so that mankind can aspire to reach those heights. The human aspects of the Sai Avatar lends His divine personality infinite sweetness. It is so with Shirdi Sai, and is the same with Sathya Sai. He knows everything about everybody, but veils his omniscience with innocence. However, the revelation of His omniscience may come to us at any moment. Many times, He began innocence about some happening in our life, only in order to save us from embarrassment. Here in one such incident in my life which sounds a little comic, but has profound significance for a devotee who has a great opportunity to interact with the Avatar. Being a sport man in my school and college days, I had continued to play games regularly. One evening, in 1980 I was playing a volleyball match at Sashay Sathya sai GramaMuddenhalli. While plying I jumped up in the air. After hitting a shot, I landed on one wrong foot, severely damaging my left knee. There was terrible pain in the left leg. I could not fold the leg. Squatting on the floor was impossible. My colleagues at Muddenahalli wanted to take me to Bangalore to see an orthopedic surgeon the next day. They also wanted to seek Bhagavan Baba’s blessing and guidance. Baba was at Prashanti Nilayam. I felt it was highly embarrassing, for me and for them, to inform Bhagavan. ‘The secretary of Muddenahalli school has broken his knee while playing volleyball.’ I prevailed upon them not to inform Bhagavan about it, but agreed to go to Bangalore the next day to see an orthopedic surgeon. I thought I could hide the injury from Bhagavan. At least, I wanted to hide the cause of the injury. You can imagine my plight when there was a telephone call from Prashanti Nilayam that evening asking me to go there the next day to see Bhagavan. I reached Prashanti Nilayam the next morning with the Principal of the school. While traveling in the car, I kept my left leg stretched straight on the back seat as the pain had continued. I went and stood at the rear end of the veranda of the mandir, since I could not sit. The Principal was sitting in front of me. With the great anxiety, I waited for Bhagavan to come out of the interview room. The veranda at the portico of the mandir were full of devotees and students. I was imagining all sorts of things probing the reason for Bhagavan calling me to Prashanti Nilayam. My worst fear was that He might chide me for playing volleyball. After sometime, Bhagavan came out of the interview room and walked straight towards me. My heart missed a few beats. The Swami's grace was the spontaneous smile of His face. I was praying all along that He should not ask me the cause of the injury to my leg. I had requested the Principal not to tell Bhagavan about the injury, if he Himself did not raise that matter. I was immensely elated when Bhagavan spoke to me about matters connected with the school. After giving some instructions, He was about to return. I was grateful to Bhagavan for saving me from embarrassment. Before He turned back, however, He asked us to take padanamaskar. The principal went down to his knees and took namaskar. As I struggling to bend down, with the right leg bent at the knee and the left leg fully stretched, Bhagavan asked me ,”What is the matter?” How could I ever lie to Bhagavan. But I blurted out a half truth, “Swami I fell down and injured my left knee.” Bhagavan waved His hand, created vibuthi, and poured it on my our stretched palms saying, “Do not neglect it. Go to Bangalore and meet a doctor.” I heaved a sigh of relief when He turned His attention to another devotee and students in the mandir, by announcing the cause of my injury to them. We went to Bangalore the same evening and met the orthopedic surgeon, who wanted an X-ray of the knee to be taken. The X-ray revealed that the radical ligaments in the knee were torn. The whole leg, from thigh to toe, was put in plaster for a minimum of six weeks. I was totally immobilized. I spent most of my time lying in bed, thinking of Bhagavan. windowtext"> Two weeks had passed after the injury. It was about 4’o clock in the evening. I was lying in bed looking at a photograph of Bhagavan on the wall. Suddenly there was a commotion outside. Boys were shouting in excitement, “Bhagavan has come! Bhagavan has come!” I was startled, and tried to rise from my bed. We had always extended a grand welcome to Bhagavan at Muddenahalli, but then, we would get at least a day’s notice of His visit. Bhagavan had come that evening without any notice. I had not shaven for two weeks, and there He was, standing in front of me with his bewitching smile, saying, “I was going to Brindavan; I thought on the way I would see your broken leg. Do not panic, I am leavening in a few minutes. How is your leg?” In complete bewilderment, I looked at Bhagavan and the two other who had accompanied Him. I was sure that Bhagavan would ask me for the cause of the injury, which, I wanted to foolishy hide from him. In fact Bhagavan explained to the two important visitors, “Papam! Narasimha Murthy was driving his motorcycle in Chikballapur very slowly. But somebody on a scooter hit him from behind and his knee is injured.” He created vibuthi and gave it to me. Before he turned to go, He gave me a very enigmatic smile, I saw omniscient innocence in that smile. I foolishly thought that I had managed to hide the cause of my injury from Him. But is it possible to hide anything from Him ? He knows ever thing/ Bhagavan stayed on in Brindavan for more than a month. After the plaster on my leg was removed, I went to Brindavan for His darshan. A few colleagues accompanied me. By his grace, my leg was completely alright. As soon as Bhagavan saw me, He called me aside. With a mischievous twinkle in His eyes, and an all knowing smile on His face. He pointed out His fore-finger and my left knee and said, “Narasimha Murthy! Papam, you are still a child. Play volleyball and cricket properly..” I was sure none but I had heard those words of Mother Sai. Such is a delusion of Her yogamaaya.
