It took me a long time, and much agony from being born an agnostic, to believe in God only by the Grace of Bhagwan Shirdi Sai Baba through whom I fortunately landed at the Holy Feet of Bhagawan Baba at Parthi. I will try to make it very short. I experienced the first Physical Darshan of Shirdi Sai Baba, when I lost my passport, documents and money at the Poona railway station, on my very first visit to India in 1969. I had absent-mindedly carried my luggage and left these documents in a wallet on the train seat. The station master told me that there was no hope of getting such documents back. As I was desolately wondering what to do, without identification papers and all money lost, an old porter approached me from nowhere and returned my lost items. Being human, the first thing I did was to check whether my passport was intact and then count the money. When I turned to thank the porter and give him a tip, he had vanished into thin air. It was much later, when I saw a picture of the " porter " being worshiped, I enquired deeply who He was and was told He was Shirdi Sai Baba. The story, though inspiring is long in detail and I will write it some day. To cut a long story short, when I was next in Bombay , enroute to direct a film in Mauritius, it dawned on me that Bhagawan Shirdi Sai Baba's tomb was within reach at Nasik. So near and yet so far - as I was on a tight filming schedule to fly the next morning. It was then that I prayed the whole night ,with tearful earnestness for the first time in my life , without sleep, to show me that God exists and if indeed, it was He who helped me at Poona, then prove to me by getting me to His Samadhi soon. To my utter disbelief, the next morning I had a phone call at the Bombay hotel from Air India stating that all flights are cancelled as the Santa Cruz Airport was burnt inexplicably due to an electrical fault. I immediately packed my bags and rushed to Shirdi and literally wept at the Shirhi Samadhi promising NEVER EVER TO HAVE ANY DOUBTS IN THE EXISTENCE of GOD and the power of sincere prayers. I stayed a blissful 7 days and the rest is History as they say. When Bhagwan Shri Satya Sai Granted me an Interview on Thursday 19 August 2004, He confirmed all this and more. I just wanted to share this story briefly to support the inspiring move by Saibabaofindia (SBOI) to encourage all to pray when requested by devotees. Yours in Sai Love and Light! ananda perera
