an expensive begging bowl for earning a livelihood. Students value courses of

study which provide income and prestige. But where is the benefit to society,

or even the real benefit to the student? Does wealth or erudition transform

one into a kinder or happier person? Education that develop virtuous character

succeeds in accomplishing its objective. Education which transmutes a student

into a benefactor of society is true learning. Swami says: "Unless

knowledge is transformed into wisdom, and wisdom expressed in character,

education is a wasteful process. If education confers the gift of

transformation, the surely life will become peaceful, happy, and and full of

mutual help and cooperation. But the aim of

education today has degenerated into the acquisition of certain skills and

intellectual tracks. It provides the educated with food, clothing, and shelter

and considers that its task is over with achievement" More value than

diamonds, more precious that gold are the values which make us truly human.

Truth, spiritual duty, peace, love and non-violence shine more brightly than

gems These are the treasures that adorn the wise. They

are stored in the cave of the heart, not in dusty bank vaults. In performing

our duty towards others we expand in love. We glimpse the truth of mankind's

fundamental unity. Genuine education reveals the oneness of mankind. This
