How should we use our talents? Swami tells us today.

Sai Inspires - 20th November 2005

Whatever talent a person has should be dedicated to the service of humanity.

Therein lies fulfillment. All men are moulded out of the same Divine essence.

Service to man will help the Divinity to blossom. It will make your life

worthwhile... Offer your talents at the feet of God; let every act be a flower,

free from creeping worms of envy and egoism, and full of fragrance, love and

sacrifice.

- Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba, Vol. 3, P 389.

Significance of Group Singing

Loving Sai Ram and greetings from Prashanti Nilayam. Last week, we had Akhand

Bhajan or extended Bhajan singing for 24 hours. This is a very interesting

event and we wonder how many of you have thought deeply about it. For one

thing, this event spans almost 48 hours, during which period, Sai Bhajans are

being sung somewhere or the other in the world.

What is the purpose of such singing and what good does it do, if any? We would

like to share some thoughts with you concerning this. Let us start with quality

Bhajan singing. In this, the singers are all focussed on God and sing in

complete harmony and unison, giving collective expression to their Love for

God. Few realise how powerful such collective singing can be. To appreciate

that, let us for a moment consider a gas laser, like the famous carbon-dioxide

laser.

A gas laser is very much like the tube light so familiar to us. There is a glass

tube with a certain gas in it. Electrical voltage is applied to the tube in a

certain manner, and the atoms or the molecules in the tube emit light or

electromagnetic radiation, as physicists like to put it. Normally, the

trillions and trillions of molecules emit light as they like – that is to say,

the light can be emitted at any instant of time and go in all directions. In a

laser, things are different. The same tube with the gas and electrical

connections and all that is subjected to some control and as a result, the

atoms or the molecules all emit light in a most “disciplined” manner. Firstly,

they emit light all together, secondly they emit light at more or less exactly

the same frequency, and thirdly they emit in the same direction. In other

words, randomness is replaced by coherence – that is how a physicist would

describe the process. And do you know what happens as a result? A

carbon-dioxide laser can emit light so powerful as to drill through 10 cm of

steel – that is right it can drill through a very thick plate of steel. That is

the power of coherence, and physics is full of many examples where the power of

coherence is manifest.

Let us now turn to Bhajans. Suppose the singers in the hall all decide to sing

according to their own fancy; a horrible and unbearable cacophony would result,

and who would want that? However, if the singers sing in a disciplined manner,

then the Bhajans are not only wonderful to listen to but also moving and

uplifting. That is why Swami pays a lot of attention to Bhajan singing by the

boys. If the boys don’t sing properly, they get a dressing down, privately of

course, followed by lessons on how to sing properly.

Now why all this fuss about Bhajans? Swami has explained that on a few rare

occasions. A few years ago He told the boys that even though the sound of the

songs might die away almost immediately after the line is sung, the subtle

vibrations would not only linger for a long time but would in fact fill the

whole universe.

Now this is something very, very important. Why? Because if the universe is

continually filled with such positive vibrations by good and earnest Bhajan

singing everywhere, then a lot of the negativity that is presently

contaminating the world would get annulled. This is the important point that

Swami made to students one afternoon in the Sai Kulwant Hall.

The point needs to be heavily underscored. People belonging to all religions go

on pilgrimages to places they describe as holy. The Hindus do it, the Muslims

do it, the Buddhists do it, the Christians do it, Jews do it, and so on. Well,

what exactly is holy about these places to which people go on pilgrimages? Why

are they called holy? The answer lies in the subtle vibrations referred to

earlier.

Let us take the Ganges at Benares. Millions in India go there for a “holy dip”

in the river. What is the big deal? The big deal is that the river has been

made holy by countless sages who bathed there in earlier times. When took the

holy dip, their Minds were full of Loving and grateful remembrance of the Lord.

The vibrations of the noble thoughts don’t fade away but linger for a long, long

time. And when ordinary mortals go to such places, these subtle vibrations DO

enter into the pilgrims, cleansing them in some measure at least.

In brief, good thoughts are always powerful. When the thoughts come from a pure

one, they are even more powerful. And when they originate in pure unison from a

large number of people singing with love and feeling at the same time, the

thoughts have a powerful effect at the time of singing and later too. It is in

recognition of this, that collective singing [such as Choir singing, for

example] was encouraged in many religions. Today when people have become quite

individualistic, such collective and group singing is tending to disappear. We

hope the Sai community would appreciate the subtle nuances and keep Bhajan

singing alive and vibrant, for the sake of the well-being of humanity.

Thank you for allowing us to be with you and see you again next week. Till then,

may all go well with you by Swami’s Grace.

Jai Sai Ram.
