Guest guest
Prof Kasturi’s Talk on “Karuna” =============================================================== The second is “Karuna” Compassion, mercy. It is not pity. Pity is something that makes you feel superior. RamKrishna Paramhamsa, when he saw some beautiful thing in nature for example a row of white Starks flying below dark clouds in the sky, he would enter into higher consciousness, or divine mood. Once, when he was in such a divine mood, he was repeating to himself, “Jeeva daya, jeeva daya” mercy to living beings, with tears flowing from his eyes. Suddenly he started looking in all directions saying, “No! No! Not mercy, not mercy! Serve living Being as representatives of God.” Vivekananda and others, close devotees, were watching with him, Vivekananda caught hold of the monk next to him and said, “Now I know what I have to do and started Ramakrishna Mission for service of all living beings. And what do you mean by service? Share and care. To care for other person. If some body falls into a well you take a loudspeaker, collect a crowd and say “Poor man has fallen into the well, he is so and so, he has wife and three children” and conduct a public meeting, collect subscription for getting a ladder, pull him out, get your photo printed in the newspapers. Get publicity for your self as the person who saved his life! That is not serving; it is an occasion for caring and for doing as much as possible to save him from the calamity. Swami says, “You must help each other as far as possible you can. If you have physical strength or financial strength, whatever you can do, do it. If you refuse, it is a sin. It is sacrilege against God to refuse or hold back your skill to intelligence or resources from a call that comes to you. Don’t say, “What can I do? It is his karma.’ It may be his “karma” that he has fallen into a well, but it is great chance for you to do some good karma and wipe out your bad karma. Take hold of your chance, jump into the well and pull him out. Every calamity accident or grief you come across is a chance for a good “Karma” for you. Take hold of it, and if you don’t, it will become your bad Karma for you, and you will have to suffer for it. If you don’t take chance where you can serve somebody, you can care for somebody, you can=an share with someone what you have, then it is bad bad Karma. Karma is both good and bad. If you do bad karma you get evil out of it and of you good karma you get benefit out of it. If man is suffering on account of his bad karma, you have the chance to do good karma by serving him. That is “Karuna” compassion. Swami tells sevadal volunteers youngman dedicated to do service in the name of Swami: It does not mean you are a sevadal volunteer only when you wear badge, or when you are allotted some work. Everywhere sevadal volunteer must be on the lookout for some opportunity to serve. You are a full time “Sevak”. A man dedicated to service and all your resources, physical, mental, financial, has to be utilized for serving others. “That is “Karuna” the second test pretty hard! Swami has not come to say, Please come all of you, I will save you, say Om, once, twice, thrice, that is enough! He has set a pretty hard task. To satisfy even one small demand Swami makes, it is pretty hard task. We have to satisfy Him, by “Adweshta Sarvabhoothanam”, never to have any feeling of haltered, or jealously, or domination on others, by showing “Karuna”, caring and sharing with people, who are not as much fortunate as ourselves, by taking all opportunities serving them, as if, we are doing it for Him, as it it is worship of Him.
