Sai Baba: "I apply vibhuti to your brow to remind you that you too are divine."

There have been countless healings by people who have put vibhuti in water and

drank it, or rubbed the ash on some ailing body part. Here is one example I

witnessed. Upon returning from a trip to India, I brought back some vibhuti for

a number of friends. One friend had recently given birth to a baby girl, Katy,

who was sickly at birth and in and out of hospitals. I went to visit Katy and

her mother, and for the first hour that we talked, Katy screamed - the entire

time. Finally, I asked G. if she would like to see the gift I had brought her.

When she opened up the ceramic container which held the vibhuti, she was

thrilled and immediately took some and rubbed it on Katy's abdomen. Within one

or two seconds Katy's pain, restlessness and screaming ended. Within five

seconds, Katy was soundly asleep. This was not the end of the story however, as

Katy required several months

of intensive medical care before she was permanently on the road to health. Of

all the miracles Sai Baba performs, everyone who has visited him has witnessed

the materialization of vibhuti. Sai Baba's biographer, the late N. Kasturi,

wrote that his calculations showed that Sai Baba had materialized several tons

of vibhuti. Kasturi died in about 1990, so the above figure is understated."

Dr. Gersten reports that, "This statue of Krishna, made of gold, was

materialized by Sai Baba in 1968, when Sai Baba was 42 years old. Krishna, a

poorna (full) Avatar, was born July 20th, 3228 B.C. and is known world-wide for

telling the story which is the Bhagavad Gita, the story of the triumph of good

over evil. This story was about a real war between the Pandavas (good guys) and

the Kauravas (bad guys) who were

cousins. The battlefield on which they fought, called the Kurukshetra, is both

real and allegorical. As a psychiatrist, I see this inner battle going on in

many people I treat. This picture was taken by Ratan Lal on May 15, 1968.

The event took place near Dwaraka, where Krishna lived, which is on the west

coast of India, about 325 miles northwest of Bombay. The description of this

event is given by N. Kasturi in Sathyam Sivaram Sundaram, Part III, on page

183-184. To paraphrase: 'While returning to Jamnagar in the evening, Baba

suddenly said, 'O, the sea is here!' and the cars stopped. We came upon a wide

patch of sandy shore, with a temple on a heap of rocks at one end. Baba walked

along the watery edge and sat on the sands at last, as Krishna must have sat

some fifty centuries ago. Sai Baba heaped the soft sand to the height of a

cubit in front of him, putting us all into a state of extreme expectancy. He

flattened the

heap and, with his finger, drew a three-slanted line, a rough circle on top of

it, a small triangle over that, and finally a short line across the circle. 'It

is ready,' he said. Digging his hands deep into the pile, he drew forth a bright

golden image of Lord Krishna playing the flute. 'You did not get darshan of

Krishna in the temple; have it now,' He said. Kasturi surmises that the long

line was for the body, the circle for the forehead, the triangle for the

peackcock feather, and the short line for the flute.' In 1968, when this

photograph was taken, there were few devotees visiting Sai Baba. However, now

there are tens of thousands of people visiting Prasanthi Nilayam, Sai Baba's

ashram, every day. After the crowds started becoming huge, Sai Baba stopped his

practice of walking with a few devotees to the nearby riverbed, because he is

followed by masses of people wherever he goes. The crowds did not start

becoming huge until the early 1980's,

and even then they were small in comparison to the 4 million devotees who came

to celebrate Sai Baba's 70th birthday in 1995. It is a miracle in itself that a

gathering of 4 million spiritual seekers received no media coverage. In spite

of these numbers, each individual has a unique relationship with Sai Baba, and

receives what he needs, although not necessarily what he wants."

During the Christmas Discourse, December 1996 in Prasanthi Nilayam, Sai Baba's

ashram in Southern India, Sai Baba waved his hand and materialized a miniature

Bible, the one seen in this photograph. Sai Baba indicated

that this was a small version of a very old version of the Bible, written in

Russian, and long lost for nearly 2,000 years. Sai Baba indicated that this

Bible had and has a number of book markers made of cloth, and that each one had

a quote from some of the world's great religions. He indicated that none of the

information in this Bible is present in the current Bible. This very new yet

very new Bible is in keeping with the history of the Bible. Prior to the year

321, there were many different gospels and many different thoughts about Jesus.

In 321 King Constantine called the first Council of Nicea to figure out what

would go in the Bible. Constantine was not a Christian, but knew that he needed

to have the support of the Christians in order to solidify the Roman Empire. One

of the most popular gospels in the first 300 years A.D. was the Gospel of

Thomas, a gospel that "did not make the cut." Constantine needed

a view, a concept of Jesus that would empower himself. In 381, fifty years of

debating ended and the Bible was officially canonized. There were two powerful

forces and ideas discussed in those fifty years. One view, the view of Arius,

was that Jesus was a man who, through great effort and spiritual practice,

became God-like, in fact became God - or the Son of God. In this view, Jesus

was seen as a model, a teacher, someone to emulate. It was the view of Arius

that each of us has the right and privilege to a one-to-one relationship with

Jesus and that we too can become more God-like by practicing what he taught and

how he lived. The opposing and winning point of view was that Jesus was a God,

far removed from the normal, mortal man, that he was an immense symbol of power

and authority. The advantage of this point of view for the early church was

that one had to go to a higher authority in order to have contact with Jesus;

one needed Popes and Priests. This idea

suited Constantine well for it was in line with his ideas of power, authority

and submission to the State. Shortly before he died, Constantine asked to be

Baptized and became a Christian just before he died. There are many mysteries

to the Bible, of which the materialized Bible by Sai Baba is one. It is also of

great interest that in about 1950 an Egyptian farmer dug up a jar that, after

much examination, proved to have fivty gospels of Jesus. After examination by

Christian historians, anthropologists, and the like, some of these gospels were

felt to be fake, and some legitmate. Among the legimate was a Gospel of Mary

Magdalene, a brief four pages. In time, the world must sort out the real

Jesus, not the one who was the creation of politicians, but the one he really

was. This discourse was captured on video, along with the materialization, by

James Redmond. You can look for it at http://www.saivideos.com. Look for the

Christmas Discourse 1996. This particular tape is catalogued as E96S and can be

found at http://www.saivideos.com/Catalog/video.html This photograph depicts

the vibhuti abhisheka, performed by Sai Baba during festivals, especially

MahaShivarathri - the night dedicated to Shiva, part of the Hindu Trinity.

Brahma is the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver, and Shiva the Destroyer of

illusion and untruth. Before Sai Baba put his hand into the urn, it was held

upside down by a devotee, so that all could see that the urn was empty. Sai Baba

would then roll up both sleeves so as to further show lack of trickery. Once he

had put his hand in the urn, Sai Baba would move his hand and arm

vigorously and large amounts of vibhuti would pour out. Professor N. Kasturi,

Sai Baba's biographer, often held the urn. He observed that once Sai Baba

inserted his hand into the urn, it instantly became much heavier. Likewise,

when Sai Baba withdrew his hand, vibhuti immediately stopped pouring out and

Kasturi would be surprised by the fact that the urn would suddenly feel quite

light once again. The late Dick Bock, who produced the early films about Sai

Baba, recorded this event and commented that it was almost stranger when Sai

Baba took his hand out of the urn and stopped the flow of vibhuti, as the

gushing out of vibhuti began to feel like the normal state. Although one

cannot see it in this picture, the vibhuti is being poured over a silver statue

of Shirdi Sai Baba, the first of the triple Sai incarnation, who died in 1918.

The amount of vibhuti produced in the vibhuti abhiskeka is so great that not

only the statue of Shirdi Sai is

covered, but so also is the floor. A British couple went to visit Sathya

Sai Baba in Puttaparthi, South India, the site of Sai Baba's main ashram called

"Prasanthi Nilayam." The husband was a devotee of Sai Baba and his wife a devout

Christian. It seems that, for the wife, Sai Baba's Divine love and miraculous

powers initially posed a problem and a conflict. Sai Baba called the couple

in for an interview, and during that interview the husband's automatic camera

began clicking and photographing on its own. Upon returning to England, the

couple discovered a photograph looking like Jesus, when they developed that

roll of film. That entire role of film had been shot in a small, simple room

with no one looking like Jesus present at the time. During their next trip to

India, Sai Baba again

called them in for an interview and asked them if they liked the photograph. He

then told the couple that this was a photograph of Jesus at the age of 28 or

29, when he had returned from "The Lost Years in India" and returned to

Jerusalem. Thus ends the corroborated version of this miracle. It is widely

understood that this miraculous experience helped the wife to, not only embrace

the Divinity of Sai Baba, but to grow closer to Jesus, and see that loving both

was a blessing and not a conflict... a blessing that helped deepen her

Christian faith. Needless to say, it is amazing and miraculous to have a

photograph of Jesus, nearly 2,000 years after his birth. It would seem, to a

very high degree of probability, that the world now has an accurate photograph

of Jesus. The crucifix in this photograph was materialized by Sai Baba

for Dr. John Hislop, a Western devotee who spent more personal time in Sai

Baba's immediate presence that perhaps any other Westerner. The late Dr. Hislop

was a spiritual giant and a quiet, humble saint. If he were still alive, he

would insist that he was not a saint or anything even close. Before

proceeding with the story, notice how small the body of Jesus is - only one

inch. The crucifix was materialized in the Spring of 1973, on Mahashivarathri,

the night of Shiva. Up until 1973, Sai Baba had materialized, or given birth to

a lingham (egg-shaped object) during Mahashivarathri each year. The night before

the usual materialization of the lingham in 1973, Sai Baba told Jack Hislop that

this year the lingham would be manifested

with only a few devotees present. Early the next morning, Sai Baba, Hislop and

a few devotees got in their cars and drove many hours until they reached the

Bandipur Forest in the Indian state of Mysore, perhaps a ten hour drive. Hislop

was hoping for a repeat performance of a miracle that occured with Sai Baba in

the Bandipur Forest previously. On that prior occasion, Sai Baba stood at the

edge of the forest and called the elephants to him. An entire herd of elephants

came thundering toward Sai Baba. Most of the devotees ran for safety, but Sai

Baba calmly stood his ground. The elephants stopped running and one of them

slowly approached Sai Baba, knelt on the ground in front of him, and then

turned around and walked back into the forest along with the herd. But in

1973, such was not the case. Sai Baba instructed the driver where to stop the

car, and after doing so, walked down the slope of a river until they reached

the sandy river bed. As

they passed a bush, Sai Baba broke off two twigs and placed them together. "What

is this, Hislop?" Sai Baba asked. "Well, Swami, it's a cross," Hislop replied.

Sai Baba then closed his hand around the two twigs and blew into his fist

several times. When he opened his hand, the twigs were no longer present, but

instead the crucifix you see in this photograph was. Hislop and the other

devotees were stunned by the miraculous crucifix, so small, yet so beautiful

and full of detail. Sai Baba related to Hislop that he had blown several

times into his fist in order to create a crucifix out of the original wood on

which Jesus was crucified. Baba said, "All of the original wood had returned to

the elements, so I had to blow on the twigs several times in order to retrieve

the original wood." Thus, the crucifix you see is made of the 2,000 year old

wood that was part of the original crucifix. Hislop, in examining the crucifix

more closely, noticed a hole at the top of the cross and asked Baba about it.

Sai Baba replied to the effect that the crucifix was not stuck into the ground,

but rather was hung on a post. Sai Baba indicated to Hislop that Jesus, as he

appears in this small metal sculpture, is the way he actually appeared after

his physical death on the cross. Following the materialization of the

crucifix, Sai Baba began walking along the riverbed, then sat in the sand with

the others around him. The group could see that Sai Baba was beginning to "give

birth" to a lingham, as he always does on Mahashivarathri. They watched until it

come out of Sai Baba's throat and was caught by him in a silk handkerchief (see

photograph 18 of a lingham). Several weeks later, Jack Hislop and his wife,

Victoria, were back in their home overlooking the ocean in Mexico near

Ensenada. A friend of theirs, Walter, had visited them, seen the crucifix and

asked if he could photograph it, which he

did. Walter and his wife returned a few weeks later, and spread out the

photographs alongside the crucifix. At exactly 5 p.m. there was a loud crash of

thunder and lightning. A great wind blew through the house and rattled the

windows and doors, blowing the curtains around. This was a mystery, as the sky

had been completely clear. Even a San Diego newspaper noted the unusual event

the following day. Victoria Hislop immediately commented, "What just happened

is described in the Bible. At exactly 5 p.m., Jesus died, and a great wind, a

violent storm suddenly descended." Victoria was able to find the Bible passage

depicting this event. The Hislops felt they had just witnessed a recapitulation

of the actual crucifixion and physical death of Jesus. A couple of years later,

Sai Baba confirmed to Hislop that his experience and interpretation of the

storm surrounding the crucifix was correct. A question arises out of this

story. Why was the crucifix

materialized on Mahashivarathri, the night and morning dedicated to the worship

of Shiva, and the dissolution of one's ego and negative qualities? Why the

materialization of the Shiva Lingham and crucifix on the same day? There are no

readily available answers to these questions. One thing is certain. This tiny,

miraculous crucifix has so much detail that the more you enlarge it, the more

detail is revealed. You will see this on the next page in looking at an

enlargement of the head of Jesus. At one point, an effort was made to

photograph the crucifix with high quality photographic equipment used by

opthalmologists. They have equipment that can accurately enlarge an object many

times more than a standard camera. However, this was not to be, and with the

passing of Hislop, the crucifix was sent back to Prasanthi Nilayam, where it is

on display at the museum there. At this size of enlargement, remember that

the face of Jesus is only

an eighth of an inch long on the actual materialized crucifix. At this size, one

begins to see more detail, and what is striking are the bumps all over his body.

Dr. John Hislop asked Sai Baba about the bumps and was told that Jesus was

beaten over every inch of his body. Because of the severe beating, blood

clotted underneath the skin, creating the numerous bumps seen here at the time

of his physical death. The crucifix in this photograph was materialized

by Sai Baba for Dr. John Hislop, a Western devotee who spent more personal time

in Sai Baba's immediate presence that perhaps any other Westerner. The late Dr.

the crucifix was sent back to Prasanthi Nilayam, where it is on display at the

museum there. Dr. Gersten reports that, "You wouldn't know there was

anything unusual about this photograph unless you knew it was taken at noon

when the sky was a light blue, about the shade of blue on the side of this

building (the Poornachandra auditorium, the largest free-standing auditorium in

India with only external supports). The figure on the side of the building is

Shiva Nataraj, dancing Shiva, the destroyer of illusion. I have loved the form

of Shiva Nataraj since I first saw it in 1978. Upon return to the United

States, the film was developed, and I was mystified and awed to see the

glorious shade of deep navy blue that the sky appears to be. On some computer

screens, the sky will appear black as night. Sai Baba has said that deep deep

blue is the color of the Infinite, the color one sees when looking down into the

ocean when far out at sea. As soon as I saw this photograph, a whole series of

events from that trip to India became clear. The day before my stay at the

ashram was over, I journeyed into Puttaparthi to visit the tailor. Within

seconds of passing through the gates of Prasanthi Nilayam into Puttaparthi, I

became ill. I instantly had a fever, became weak, and could not walk the

hundred yards to the tailor. I staggered back to my room at the ashram. I felt

certain that this was a unique spiritual illness, and that Sai Baba had

something to do with it. Nonetheless, just to be safe, I took an antibiotic.

That evening, a Thursday, as Sai Baba passed by me at evening darshan, I said,

"Swami, I am leaving tomorrow. Will you see me?Yes, yes, I see you," He

replied. A word of advice. Always be more specific in asking a question of Sai

Baba. By Friday morning I was a bit delirious from the strange illness.

Morning darshan came, and Sai Baba walked right past me. I asked my taxi driver

if he would wait eight hours until evening darshan and he agreed to do so.

Finally, evening darshan came and I knew that this would be my last chance to

interact with Sai Baba during this trip. He came out of the Mandir, or temple,

and walked over to the men's side (men and women sit separately). Baba walked

my way, stood beside a boy who was sitting to my left and began to wave his

hand in the familiar style indicating he is about to materialize something.

My eyes were fixed on what was happening, and Baba's hand was no more than a

foot and a half away

from me. Suddenly, a silver medallion dropped right out of the center of Sai

Baba's palm and just hovered in space. The medallion was spinning around

quickly as it hovered as if defying gravity, and it was molten hot as if it had

just come out of the Cosmic Oven. As the medallion spun in space, a bright beam

of light shot out in my direction - right into my eyes. I was so amazed and

stunned that I couldn't breathe for a moment. That was the moment when Sai Baba

chose to zip on past me, but I regained my breath, got up on my knees and said,

"Swami I am leaving. Will you please see me in an interview?" He stopped,

looked me in the eyes for the first time in two weeks and said, "What did you

say?" I repeated myself, word for word, and was shocked by what happened next.

Sai Baba slapped the back of my head and said, "Sit!" He then walked away. I

was confused and upset and felt that this was the wrong outcome for the trip.

Certainly it wasn't the outcome I had wanted.

One thing stuck in my mind as he faded into the distance, and that was that I

felt that the medallion he had materialized had been materialized both for the

boy and for myself. I left the ashram in a huff, disappointed by my journey

up until that point. I packed my bags, got in the taxi and headed away from

Prasanthi Nilayam. When the taxi had traveled no more than a half mile from the

ashram, I had a sudden realization. The moment he slapped the back of my head,

Sai Baba removed the strange illness I had. I began to laugh. It would take too

long to describe all the things that I instantly understood, but a dozen things

came into sharp focus. I had been so intent on getting an interview, and so

disappointed that I did not have one, that for the half hour after he had

slapped my head I entirely missed the fact that he had removed the illness. I

knew that Sai Baba had given me the strange spiritual illness and that he had

removed it. This

is highly significant in the light of my prayers and questions before the trip.

Before the trip, I prayed or mentally spoke to Sai Baba and said, "During my

first trip, you proved that you are indeed for real, that you are the maker of

miracles, and that you are fully Divine. But after that trip, just about

everything in my life fell apart or changed. So, Baba, I surrender everything

to you now . . . except for my health. And I want to know if you are involved

in my life. Are you my spiritual teacher?" As the taxi pulled away, I knew he

had heard my prayer. He was indeed involved in my life in a big way and this was

his way of telling me that. I laughed at my bold and foolish prayer in which I

had said, "But you can't touch my health." It was precisely through my health

that he chose to work his miracles. And then I laughed harder. I'm a medical

doctor and am pretty used to the preferential treatment doctors get (or used to

get) in America. I had traveled

26,000 miles, circled the globe, and this man, this Sai Baba wouldn't even speak

to me. What a crushing blow to my medical ego, but a pleasant and funny one.

There is no one special in Sai Baba's eyes. He showers his love on homeless

beggars as much as he does on heads of state. Being a doctor meant nothing on

this spiritual path. Everyone is equally special in his eyes. More thoughts

flooded my mind. "Well, if he's involved at the level of my body, maybe I

should take a good look at my diet." Daring fool that I was, I challenged that

very thought when I arrived at the West End Hotel in Bangalore. I ordered lamb

kabob and a quart of beer. I was throwing down the gauntlet. The next day, the

spiritual illness returned and I became quite frightened. I was so weak that I

couldn't imagine surviving thelong flight ahead. I took out some vibhuti (see

photo number 1), rubbed some on my forehead and put some on my tongue, and then

prayed in this way: "Please free

me from this illness. I will be a strict vegetarian the rest of the time I am in

India. Please let me work this out on my own once I am back in America."

Instantly I felt better, almost cured. However, the day of my return flight I

was beginning to feel weak again. But, when the plane left India, the illness

completely vanished. I arrived at LA International Airport, where my car had

been parked for the month, drove two hours back home to San Diego . . . and had

no jet lag. Now, you're probably wondering what ever happened to the

photograph of Shiva on the side of the building with the deep deep blue sky.

Well, you see, I had said to myself, while in India, that if Sai Baba

materialized anything for me, I would like a medallion of Shiva Nataraj,

dancing Shiva, the form seen in this picture. Sai Baba had given me the

miracle in two parts. The medallion he had materialized had taken my breath

away and I had felt that part of

that miracle was intended for me. And then this photograph was printed, a

miracle surrounding Shiva. Together, the medallion and the photograph, were the

Shiva medallion I had asked for, just not the way I had imagined it. The sense

of awe, gratitude, and love I felt was immense. My ego had taken quite a

pounding during that trip. Of course, ego demolition is Shiva's job

description. I have gone on at some length here to indicate that the miracles,

in-and-of themselves are not what matters. They are part of a much grander

sheme. These miracles showed me Sai Baba's love and compassion, his humor, his

Shiva sternness, his omniscience. He showed me that he will give me what I

need, which may have nothing to do with what I want. To this day, I am still

learning from the miracle of this Shiva Blue Sky photograph." Of all the

physical objects that Sai Baba has manifested, or materialized, out of thin

air, sacred ash, or vibhuti, is the most common. Because ash is the final end

product of all matter on earth, it holds a special sacred place in the world's

religions. In the spiritual sense, vibhuti is the most precious object. To

quote Sai Baba: "I apply vibhuti to your brow to remind you that you too are

divine." There have been countless healings by people who have put vibhuti in

water and drank it, or rubbed the ash on some ailing body part. Here is one

example I witnessed. Upon returning from a trip to India, I brought back some

vibhuti for a number of friends. One friend had recently given birth to a baby

girl, Katy, who was sickly at birth and in and out of hospitals. I went to

visit Katy and her mother, and for the first hour that we talked, Katy screamed

- the entire time. Finally, I asked G. if she would like to see the gift I had

brought her. When she opened up the

ceramic container which held the vibhuti, she was thrilled and immediately took

some and rubbed it on Katy's abdomen. Within one or two seconds Katy's pain,

restlessness and screaming ended. Within five seconds, Katy was soundly asleep.

This was not the end of the story however, as Katy required several months of

intensive medical care before she was permanently on the road to health. Of

all the miracles Sai Baba performs, everyone who has visited him has witnessed

the materialization of vibhuti. Sai Baba's biographer, the late N. Kasturi,

wrote that his calculations showed that Sai Baba had materialized several tons

of vibhuti. Kasturi died in about 1990, so the above figure is understated.

This picture depicts a yagna or sacrifice. This is not the kind of

sacrifice where one kills an animal. In this ceremony what is sacrificed are

one's bad qualities, one's anger, greed, envy, jealousy, and lust. These Vedic

Priests are pouring ghee, a form of butter, and other liquids into the fire.

If we had RealAudio, you could hear the chanting of the Vedic Priests, which

will go on all day long during certain holidays. If one looks at the fire in

this photograph, Sai Baba's form can easily be seen, with his right hand raised

as if blessing others. If you have trouble seeing Sai Baba's form, click on

the photo to go to the next size up in enlargement. That picture has been

edited in PhotoShop so that Sai Baba's left arm, hair, and right hand are

outlined in black. This photo
