Guest guest
** "bongiovanni" <bongiovanni (AT) mindspring (DOT) com> It is my experience and my hope that every spiritual person would wish to carefully check any hearsay for authenticity before passing on such items to devotees. Indeed it is hoped that the wise elders and keen members of this group would ever exhibit good sense, steady will, and alert action so as to guarantee that satsangh is not distracted by chain letters or hoaxes. That said, please note the following message is but a hoax. See confirmation at the conclusion of that posted chainletter from rb_bubai. Pray do no such thing. Rather take His time to confirm such matters before passing them on, as one may see exampled for example via http://www.google.com/search?q=virus+will+erase+all+IMEI+and+IMSI&sourceid=mozilla-search&start=0&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:officialandhttp://www.hoax-slayer.com/mobile-phone-virus-hoax.html and http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/mobile.htmethttp://people.delphiforums.com/BonGiovanni/sat.htmJai Siva Siva --------- Wed, 05 Oct 2005 14:28:53 -0000"" < (AT) (DOT) co.in>A message from our member**Then references are appended below for ready reference of members = '' Mobile Phone Virus HoaxSummary:Forwarded messages claim that a destructive virus will infect your mobile (cell) phone if you receive a call that displays "ACE" or "XALAN" on the screen.Status:FalseExample:(Submitted, 2004, 2005) Subject: FW: URGENT message for mobile phone users!!!URGENT message for mobile phone users!!!Please be careful and mindful! The information in the email is completely untrue and has certainly not been "confirmed by both Motorola and Nokia". If a virus had really destroyed the mobile phones of 3 million US users it would be a major news story around the world. There is nothing on the CNN site about this virus nor does a search of Google News reveal any articles that confirm the story. However, there are legitimate news articles about a real mobile phone virus that was discovered back in June 2004. This worm, dubbed "Cabir" is basically a "proof of concept" virus and does little damage. Vnunet.com reports that the first outbreak of this virus "in the wild" occurred in Singapore in early October. Although Cabir is virtually harmless, it does indicate that mobile phone virus attacks are possible and may become a significant threat in the future. News of Cabir may also be giving new life to this old mobile phone virus hoax. While mobile phone viruses are real, experts maintain that the potential threat of such viruses has been exaggerated. In any case, the information included in these emails is false and the "warnings" should be deleted without forwarding. Any "virus warnings" received via a forwarded email should not be taken at face value. Always take the time to confirm the information at a reputable anti-virus website. An older version of the hoax: ATTENTION!!!NOW THERE IS A VIRUS ON MOBILE PHONE SYSTEM. All mobile phone in DIGITAL system can be infected by this virus. If you receive a phone call and your phone display "UNAVAILABLE" on the screen (for most of digital mobile phones with a function to display in-coming call telephone number), DON'T ANSWER THE CALL. There are over 3 million mobile phone being infected by this virus in USA now. You can also check this news in CNN web site: http://www.cnn.com. Please forward this information to all your friends who have digital mobile phones. Origins: This warning first appeared on the Internet in 1999, when it cautioned cell phone users to beware of answering calls from "UNAVAILABLE." In 2002 the hoax was revived for another run, that time cautioning mobile chatters against taking calls from "ACE-?". In 2005 it came back once again, in that instance to warn the cell-enabled to not accept calls from XALAN. There is no such threat. No mobile phone viruses capable of infecting cell phones and erasing SIM cards have yet been discovered. Hoaxes often contain claims that authoritative sources have confirmed the substance of the warnings, and this one is no exception. It asserts that both Nokia and Motorola validate the information and that CNN has run at least one item about it, yet both Nokia and Motorola label this a hoax, and a search of CNN's site turns up no story about this "virus." It's a hoax all the way down. In June 2000, an instance of a computer virus that affected cell phones was recorded, although this wasn't a case of a malevolent program inserted into the phones themselves; the cells were merely the final destination of the leg-pull. The "Timofonica" virus was designed to send prank messages to cell phones on the Telefonica cellular network, which operates in Spain. The virus worked like this: victims would receive it as an e-mail attachment on their home or work computers. When users opened the infected attachments, the virus, plus a message critical of Telefonica, would be sent to every e-mail address in their address books. The virus would also trigger the each victim's computer to send a text message to a randomly-selected cell phone on Telefonica's network. Timofonica did not harm cell phones any more than a wrong number call damages any phone. However, as wireless technology grows more sophisticated, so does the risk that one of these days there really will be a real virus launched against cell phones, one that will force its way into units and do nasty little things to them once it's in there. There are also concerns that the rush to get new technology onto the market sometimes results in not nearly enough care being given to security issues.
