Guest guest
In the puranic lore of the Aryans, there are many cases, where death was conquered. Some examples are very interesting. Markandeya : Marnkandya rishi was granted only sixteen years of life by the lord himself. When the last moment arrived, he saw death face to face. The story goes interestingly to say that when Markandya rishi saw Yama coming, he embraced the Shiva linga. When Yama threw his pasha to take away markandya's soul, the pasha dragged shiva-linga also thus taking lord shiva with it. Lord Shiva who is himself the God of death, got infuriated by Yama's misbehaviour, and killed him by opening his third eye. Lord Shiva got his name "Maha Mrityunjaya" from that day. Later on request of all devas, Shiva revived Yama, asking him not to take life of Markandya. Thus Markandya rishi is one of the chirinjivis (always living in body without death). The death was thus conquered by Rishi Markandya. SAVITRI: her husband Satyavan, died before her eyes. She saw Yama face to face, pulling satyam's linga sharira(astral body) from his body. She also saw the subtle body of her husband. This subtle body called "Angushtha-purusha" (thumb-sized individual) was a true replica of her husband's physical body. Savitri argued with Yama and by her wits succeded in getting back the soul of her husband, thus making him alive again. This is another example of conquest of death. Shri Krishna performed yet another feat. His guru Sandipani had lost his son long ago. The lad's jivaatma was in the other astral world. Krishna brought him back into the physical body (by synthesising one body out of elements) and restored the son to the parents. Shri Krishna also revived Parikshit,(grandson of Arjuna) after he was killed in the womb by Brah-astraa of of Ashwathhama. Even a Maha-yogi can not perform such feats but since Krishna was God himself he could easily mould the nature's laws for his Lila. In Kathhopanishad Nachiketa saw the God Death (yama) after he had left his mortal body behind and he had performed the rarest feat of obtaining the secret of conquering death as a premle to Moksha from Yama himself. This was a revelation of a secret for the good of mankind. Thus, he possibly conquered anyone's death. It behoves us to try to understand the significance of Nachiketa's achievement and investigate if there is any method shown legibly in tis wonderful story. It is noteworthy that death conquered elsewhere did not involve a path to Moksha. Such a path, in the case of Nachiketa was shown by the God himself tacitly. For the sake of moksha, therefore, the conquering of death has the approval of the gods in anyone's case. Otherwise, the law of death is inexorable. Yoga is a science already known to the mankind and its assistance can be taken. What does conquering death imply?? The man who indulges in Karma is one and one who reaps the results, is another due to the fact that death and re-birth, although of the same soul, has broken the continuity of its world experience. Hence the average man is unable to comprehend the Karma-result relationship. The continuity of the soul in different incarnations has only to be experienced to know this secret of creation, and by then, the mystery is not only solved but the ultimate threshold is open for the man, for a permanent release from bondage….
