About the temple

The temple of Lord Mayureshwara of Morgaon has four gates. In the eastern gate

are Lakshminarayana, the givers of Dharma. In the southern gate are Parvati and

Shankara – givers of Artha (desired goals). Then comes the western gate where

Rathi and Kama (givers of Kama) reside. Lastly in the northern gate reside

Mahivaraha (Earth and Sun). By their worship Moksha is attained. Devotees

worship these gates during the first four days of Shukla paksha of any month

particularly Bhadrapada or Magha. Thus all deities and all sages reside in this

temple. By doing this Dwara Yatra and Ganesa Puja all good desires of the

devotees are fulfilled and all sins destroyed. By having Bhairava darshan,

Neelakanta darshan and Kruttivas darshan in this temple, devotees achieve

removal of ghost-effects in the body, cure from diseases, etc. In all, there

are 23 Parivar Murthis in this temple. In the eight corners, there are eight

statues of Ganapathi called as EKADANTA, MAHODARA, GAJANANA, LAMBODARA, VIKATA,

VIGNARAJA, DHUMRAVARNA, and VAKRATUNDA. A big bull(Nandi) is present in all the

Shiva's temples. (Nandi is god Shiva’s vahana or vehicle.) God Shiva rides on

Nandi. How then this Nandi happened to be in this Ganesha temple? There is a

story. In this locality there was a temple of God Shiva. This Nandi was build

for that temple. While taking the Nandi to the God Shiva's temple, cart was

broken in front of Lord Mayureshwara's temple. Then another cart was build and

tried to move the Nandi on that cart but that cart was also broken. This

happened again and again so in order to reduce the height of Nandi the devotees

begin to rub the Nandi, at that time blood begin to flow from the body of Nandi.

There was sudden sound came from the heaven with words that don't reduce the

size of Nandi, install this Nandi in front of the Lord Mayureshwara. The

devotees followed the words and installed the Nandi

after the steps. After entering the main door one can enter inside the big wall,

the temple is made up of black stone but from inside it is painted. One can see

a mouse whose front legs are elevated at the entrance of the temple. One can

also see a big chandelier which is made up of black stone inside the main

entrance. The idol of Lord Mayureshwara is very attractive. The idol is in

seating position with trunk going towards left and the idol is facing East. The

idol has three eyes and has diamonds in the eyes and on hands. Nagraj(the king

of snakes) on the head of the idol. The original idol was black and small. But

because of the layers of the red lead it looks red and big. The red lead is

applied on the idol. The red lead is liked by Lord Ganesha. Twice these layers

fall down from the original idol, which was seen by many people. This happened

in 1788 and 1822. In the Mudgal Puran the description of the idol is as

follows,

The deity has four hands and three eyes. Pash & Ankush were held in the upper

hands. third hand is place on the knee, holding modak(a sweet made up of

boiling milk) in the fourth hand. Dharma Raj Yudhishtir, son of the king Pandu,

installed the present idol. This story is about five thousand years old. As

written earlier Panch-Devata installed the original idol....A very old tree,

called as Kalpa Vriksha (the tree that fulfils every desire) is present near

the temple. Shri Moraya Gosavi did penance under this tree and his wish to see

Lord Ganesha was fulfilled. So devotees of Lord Ganesha have faith in doing

penance under this tree. Shami tree & Mandar tree are also present inside the

temple compound on left side. One can see the statue of Yogindracharya on right

side after entering the temple. There are also various Tirthas in this temple,

bathing in which all sins are destroyed. Important among them are

Ganesa Tirtha, Kapila Thirtha, Vyasa Thirtha, Bhima Tirtha and Rshi Tirtha. There

is a story behind these tirthas --

Morgaon is located on the bank of river Karha. The story about the river is as

follows: God Brahmadeva had a daughter called Shri Saraswati. One day God

Brahmadeva lost his mind(Buddhi) and about to behave with her like a wife. But

then he realised what he was doing. He felt ashamed about it. To clear his sins

and impurity of mind he built shrines at all holy places, but still he was not

satisfied. Then he came to Morgaon and started consecration of Lord

Mayureshwara. He brought holy water in his Kamandalu(a small pot used to keep

the water from holy rivers by gods or saints.) Somehow that kamandalu got

slipped and holy water spilled on the floor. God Brahma felt bad and tried to

collect the holy water. At that time Lord Mayureshwar’s words came to him as,

not to collect the water, let that water from Brahma-Kamandalu flow as river

Karha, which can clear/vanish all the sins, there are seven

holy place within the flow of five miles. They are namely Ganesh-tirth,

Bhim-tirth, Kapal-tirth, Vyas-tirth, Rishi-tirth, Sarvapunya-tirth &

Ganesh-Ganga-tirth.On left side of the temple one can see a small temple of

Nagna Bhairav (an obedient attendant of Lord Mayureshwara). One more temple of

Nagna Bhairav is towards East of Morgaon about a mile away. Without worshipping

the Nagna Bhairava one can not complete Mayureshwar's pilgrimage. Lord

Mayureshwara has given this boon to Nagna Bhairava, that one can not come in

this holly place without your wish and you are the watchman of the Morgaon.

Nagna Bhairava protects the devotees of the Lord Ganesha. It is not possible to

every one to go to Nagna Bhairava temple which is a mile away from the Morgaon

every time. So there is a small temple built out of main nave of Lord

Mayureshwara where one can worship Nagna Bhairava first and then can go to the

nave to worship Lord Mayureshwara.

Lord Ganesha is worshipped before starting any new work. Shri Siddhi and Shri

Buddhi are within the Lord Ganesha. For doing any work one needs control on

mind & Shri Buddhi gives that mind so if Buddhi will not act then it is very

difficult to complete the work or one may face many obstacles in completing the

work. The other wife of Lord Ganesha & sister of Buddhi is Siddhi.Siddhi means

everything is achieved by which. Siddhi means power to act, penance and

successful divine illumination ,entire knowledge and ever lasting prosperity is

under control of Siddhi. Siddhi is not separate from Lord Ganesh. If any one

worships Lord Ganesha Siddhi and the other wife of Lord Ganesha Buddhi are

together with Lord Ganesha even though there are no separate idols of Siddhi &

Buddhi ,that is why it is a must to pray/worship Lord Ganesha first. And among

all the holy places in the world, Morgaon is the only shrine where all 33

crore gods and goddesses are invisibly present in the nave (Hindu mythology

believes that total 33 crore gods and goddesses are present.) if someone goes

to Shri Durga’s temple one will get merit of visiting Shri Durga. If someone

goes to the temple of God Shiva, one will get merit of visiting God Shiva. But

if one visit the temple of Mayureshwara one will get merit of visiting not only

Lord Ganesha but also all other gods and goddesses. Lord Mayureshwara is very

powerful and potent/awake god. If one honestly wish something holy before Lord

Mayureshwara, that wish will definitely becomes true that is the beliefs of

devotees.

Om Shree Ganeshaya Namah...
