LEARNING TO BE A DISCIPLE

Baba said, "Come what may, leave not, but stick to your Bolster (support, i.e.

Guru) and ever remain steady, always at-one-ment (in union) with him" In Sri

Sai Satcharitra, Ch. XXVI

This is the story of a very courageous man. He was one of the earliest disciples

of Jesus Christ. Prosecuted for his Faith, he was arrested and condemned to

death by being thrown to wild beasts in the Rome Circus.

Handcuffed and chained, he was thrown in a galley to sail to Rome. As the ship

touched various ports along the route, groups of his admirers thronged

together, eager to have one last look at the holy man. How they longed to pay

him the homage of their devoted hearts! Those with some influence with the

authorities, wished to intercede on his behalf, for the mitigation of the fatal

sentence.

But the holy man would not hear of it. He had been called to a Feast of Love,

where he would sup with his Lord, and he would not permit anyone to raise

obstacles in the way.

“I implore you to spare me untimely kindness,” he said to his friends. “Let me

be food for wild beasts, for thus shall I shall be able to reach God…. Please

do not interfere with the Will of the Lord. He knows what is good for me. I am

beginning to learn what it is to be a disciple…

“Come fire or cross, struggles with fierce beasts, breaking of bones and

mangling of limbs, shattering of my whole body, come all the devil’s most cruel

torments upon me, if only I may reach my Master and

Lord!”Tired of
