Maha Shivarathri day-8th March: 2005: Shivarathri is a very auspicious day for all. It is the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight when the moon is waning and the sun is in the sign of Aquarius. The festival is, however, related to the moon rather than the sun. That is the reason why it is called Shivarathri, the night of Shiva. Unlike other nights, this particular night is the night of consecration, of dedication, and of illumination. On this night there is just a minute part more to be conquered and that can be done by keeping vigil and dwelling on the glory of God. The vigil that is prescribed is symbolic of the eternal vigil one has to observe, while the rite of fasting is symbolic of divesting the senses of the pleasures for which they crave. The nightlong devotional singing is significant of the life-long consciousness of the Divine Presence that every one should cultivate. ----- 2. SAI - SAMPOORNA DATTAVATAR Saibanisa GopalaRao Ravada- Saidarbar – Hyderabad. Part –1 Most of you must be aware that the origin of Guruparmapara traces back to Lord Dattatreya. Firstly, let me offer salutations to Lord Dattatreya before proceeding further. After Lord Dattatreya, the tradition of Guru parampara continued with Sri Sripada Srivallabha, Sri Narasimha Saraswathi, Sri ManikPrabhu, Sri Akkalakota Maharaj and Sri Shirdi Sai Baba. The last three incarnations have taken place during the Nineteenth century. Lord Dattatreya has taken incarnations in various personalities but the main aim and objective remained centered around to offer protection to HIS devotees and rid them from miseries and drive towards Spiritualism. I would like to confine to the Gurus – `Sri Sripada Srivalabha, Sri Narasima Saraswathy and Sri Shirdi Sai Baba'. To dwell on the subject, I would draw my references from Guru Charitra written by Sri Gangadhara Saraswathy compiled in the 6540 Slokas and Sri Sai Satcharitra written by Sri Annasaheb Dhabolkar in 9000 Ovies. I would like comparing the similarities between Sri Sripada Srivallabha Sri Narasimha Saraswathy and Sri Shirdi Sai Baba from The Guru charitra and Sai Satcharitra. At the end, if I am able to convince that all the incarnations of Lord Dattatreya have taken place on this planet earth with the same mission, then I shall feel that I am blessed by the Lord. Please refer Sai Satcharitra – Baba has indicated indirectly that He is the incarnation of Lord Dattatreya in various chapters. In the story of Goa Gentleman, He has taken Rs.15/- from a Datta Devotee, which he owed to Lord Dattatreya. When Nanasaheb chandorkar, a Datta devotee arrived at Shiridi along with his co- son in law, Shirdi bypassing his normal visit to the Datta Mandir at Kopargaon, Baba warned him not to repeat such things in future. On a Guru Poornima day, Baba advised Dhadha Kelkar to worship the `Pillar' at Dwarakamai, indicative of telling to worship Lord Dattatreya – considered as the pillar of Datta Parampara. At the request of all the devotees, Baba finally allowed His devotees to worship Him. With this, Baba confirmed that He is incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. Baba instructed Hari Vinayak Sathe to read Guru Charitra twice and Kushabhavu 108 times. With this Baba has indirectly told His devotees, His origin and the connectivity with Sri Sripada Srivallabha and Narasimha Saraswathy. We should make a note that Baba never told that He is God. He always used to say that He is the servant of the God. Precisely I feel that must be the reason why HE never expressed directly that He is the incarnation of Lord Dattatreaya. Now let us compare the incidents from Guru Charitra and Sri Sai Satcharitra: In 5th Chapter of Guru charitra -Sripada Srivallabha has given vision and ability to walk to his two brothers born physically handicapped. We all know that in Sai Satcharitra, Baba has given vision to blind persons and walking power to crippled persons. In 8th chapter Guru Charitra, due to poverty, a Brahmin lady along with her son tried to commit suicide by jumping in to the river Krishna. Sri Narasimha Saraswathi not only stopped them from that act of committing sin but also blessed them with wealth. In the similar way, in 26th chapter of Sai Satcharitra, Baba averted the suicide attempt of Gopal Narayan Ambedekar and blessed him with wealth. To be continued… ------------ 3. SAI'S NEWS FROM THE TIME MACHINE: March 1911- Tatyasaheb Noolkar, a staunch devotee of Baba, Sub-Judge of Phandarpur breathes his last at Shiridi at the age of 48. March 1912- Dadasaheb Khaparde returned to Amroati. Mrs.Laxmibai Khaparde stayed behind in Shiridi. -------------------- 4. SAI PHILOSOPHY: SAI PHILOSOPHY FROM THE DIARY OF SAI.BA.NI.SA. These messages are the outcome and essence of the dream sequences of Saibanisa as given by Lord Sainath, which reflect the Sai Philosophy and his high thinking. They carry a sense of deep meaning and are generally thought provoking, enough to set one's thinking process. Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY. 192) 11th October, 1997: When women are not respected, the society does not prosper. Goddess "GAYATRI" has incarnated (as Shakthi Swaroopini) to rectify the malady. Chant regularly her mantra to ward of evils and seek her blessings. 193) 5th November 1997: Children getting hurt during play continue to play next day also. Be mentally prepared to push through life in spite of hurdles. 193) 7th NOV 1997: All those who talk sweetly cannot be friends. Friendship cannot be a result of a day or two. Friendship like companionship is a lifetime experience. 194) 7th NOV 1997: As a youth man's mind is always preoccupied with the thoughts of earning money and experiencing worldly pleasures. Whereas, old age is spent in sustaining life providing for children and lack of zeal. Decide the appropriate time to start thinking of "GOD". 195) 11th NOV 1997: I am the recipient of all the abuses and punishments given to a person defaming you. Similarly when your opponent does the same, I am still at the receiving end. Is it justified? -------------------------- 5. SAI IN DREAMS: These are the dream sequences and messages as received by SAIBANISA from our beloved GURU LORD SAINATH OF SHIRIDI. In Anticipation that this feature will help in one's spiritual growth are hereby compiled from his personal Diary and presented to SAIBANDHUS. Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY. Dated: 07-10-1992 I was not well for the past two days and unable to sing the Kakad aarathi for Baba. Sai appeared as an elderly woman with a big Bindi on her forehead adorned in a silk saree. Many followers surrounded her. I could push myself in to her close proximity. She addressed the crowd and passed comments about me that I was running after offering poojas to all deities and observing fasts and in return spoiling my health. He is not only harming himself but also his kith and kin. I then missed my sleep and memory was drawn to Baba's advice to Mrs.Ghokle in 32nd chapter where in he advocates not to observe fasting. When stomach is empty, mind and body cannot synchronize and concentrate. Dated: 08-10-1992. My childhood friends and myself were watching a movie in an old theatre. During intermission, we came out to have drinks in a nearby bar. I came out with the intention to continue to watch the second half of the movie. On the way I crossed the Railway line. I eased myself and happily got into a train that happened to stop there. After some time I realized that I came half way through watching the movie. I walked through the interiors of the coaches and approached the Engine Driver and requested him to stop the train. He was clad in a white headgear similar to the one Baba wears. He looked to me compassionately and said "You got in to this train because of the good deeds committed in your past life. Do not alight from this until you reach the destiny, lest you ruin your life. Listen to my words and I shall tell you where to get down". I got up and analyzed the content of the dream. Life is like a cinema. Watch the first half and friends symbolized the `Arishadvargas'. Easing indicated their rejection .The train journey is an indication for the new path chosen and the role of the driver is that of Sai stressing not to look back or re enter in the old thrash and advising to prepare myself for the next life to come. All worldly attachments are passing transients. Dated: 21-11-1992. In contrast to the normal habit of having a note- book by my pillow side, I thought the other way to remember the message contents and to pen them down after I wake up from my bed in the early morning. So thinking I retired to bed. I have gone through a series of video clippings and I could not remember even a single one. I was disappointed very much and cursed myself for the negligent behavior. I took recourse to Sai Satcharitra. It was the forth chapter and my attention was drawn to the advice given by Sai to Kaka Sahib Dikshit which go like this-"Has Vittal Patil come? Little casual approach will make him to slip". In my understanding Sai himself was Vittal and it was only due to my over confidence, I could not note down the indications. I realized the mistake and could get the gist of the message and henceforth taken a vow not to repeat again. There is no end to the road of perfectionism. -------------------------------- 6. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA: "Venkateswaraswamy Swarna" swamysv 2/16/2005 02:15:40 –0000 Sai Ram. Let us take up the Spiritual Gems from this great and wonderful chapter, which establishes the oneness of Sai with all other Saints. "With great respect he then sat near Baba, and prayed to Him saying- "Many persons who find themselves in difficult situations come to You, and You relieve them immediately. Hearting this, I have sought anxiously Your Feet; please, therefore, do not disappoint me." Sai Ram. As mentioned already, nothing comes without effort. Ratanji followed the Sastras and Vedic injuctions in that he first worshipped his God and then asked for the boon. "Sai Baba then asked him for Dakshina of Rs. five which Ruttonji intended to give, but added, that He has already received Rs. 3-14-0 from him, and that he should pay the balance only. Hearing this, Ruttonji was rather puzzled. He could not make out what Baba meant. That was the first time, he thought, that he went to Shirdi and how was it that Baba said that He had formerly got Rs. 3-14-0 from him? He could not solve the riddle." Sai Ram. Ratanji was a simple man and it is not surprising that he should be puzzled thus. Sai Baba spoke mostly in cryptic sentences, which were full of meaning, and we see quite a few places where devotees had to ask each other what Baba meant. And it is Sai's leela that He gave the devotee thus asked the meaning so that the devotee who asked is benefited. Why not tell directly and explain? If everything is made too simple and direct, there is no fun even in ordinary life. What is obtained with a little difficulty is prized better than what is given freely. Sai knew the human nature and acted accordingly. "But he sat at Baba's Feet and gave the balance of the Dakshina asked for, explained to Baba fully, as to why he came and sought His help, and prayed that Baba should bless him with a son. Baba was moved and told him not to be worried, and that his bad days had ended. He then gave him Udi, placed His hand on his head and blessed him saying that God would satisfy his heart's desire." Sai Ram. Sai pulled Ratanji from Nanded to Shirdi, and knew fully well what for Ratanji came to Him. Yet, keeping the worldly custom of letting the guest talk listened to Ratanji. Ratanji too, followed the worldly custom of explaining to a Saint (though every one knows that the Saint doesn't need any explanation) his heartfelt desire. Even in our daily Puja, we tell our location, our name, the intention of taking up that Puja etc., in Sankalpam. This Statement Of Purpose (SOP) is very important since it helps us to focus our intention. And intention is the seed for the fruits of future. We shall continue with this Chapter. Sai Ram. -- 7. QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY: (By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao) "Shashi": shashi_31 15. Baba's method of treating sick persons with His recipes. a. To a devotee Baba prescribed curd rice being given to a black dog that would come to him at Lakshmi Temple at Shirdi. This was the recipe for who was suffering from fever. By giving curd rice to the black dog, the sickness was cured. b. When Kaka Maharaj was suffering from diarrhea, Baba prescribed groundnuts and water. Immediately after taking them, his diarrhea stopped. c. Baba prescribed to a cholera patient infusion of almond with milk, when he drank that, his cholera was cured. d. When one of His devotees suffering from lumbago, Baba advised application of heated aloc (kala-banda) over the effected part. The pain immediately subsided. e. Baba prescribed SIRA (sweet pudding) for R.R Samant's children suffering from diarrhea. The motions stopped by taking this drink. Even after Baba's Mahasamadhi, He prescribed such recipes to His devotees. Whenever the writer of this book was suffering from heart pain and breathlessness, Baba advised him not to go to doctors but take Bilwapatri juice mixed with garlic and ginger juice, which gives immediate relief. f. Dr.K Sudhakar of Hyderabad was a confirmed diabetic patient since 18 years and he had been under treatment for the same. In 1990, he had an abscess on his right foot, which did not heal in spite of antibiotic injections and application of ointments. He was admitted in hospital and finally they decided that his foot had to be amputated lest gangrene might develop and spread to the upper portion of his leg. When this writer in his usual daily meditation got a message from Sri Sai Baba in which the profile of the patient was shown, with the advice that he would not be cured in the hospital and therefore he should get discharged immediately and come home. He also prescribed a mixer of Bilwapatris, Tulasipatra and Sharadaparta juice being applied on the wound. Upon hearing this, the patient got discharged and followed Baba's medicine; miraculously his wound got completely healed in two weeks. When this writer got a heart attack, he was admitted in the hospital, in May 1998. The doctors after all tests diagnosed that all the three valves i.e. Aortic, Mistral and Pulmonary, were not functioning and because of that there was no sufficient blood circulation to the heart. At this stage by-pass surgery also could not be done. They prescribed a list of medicines to be taken daily. Later in one of the messages, Baba said that the diagnosis of the doctors was wrong and that it was HYPERTROPHIC OBSTRUCTIVE CARDIOMYOPATHY. He prescribed some medicine for this disease. Sri V Narayana Rao of Hyderabad says that his son was admitted in the Gandhi Hospital at Secundrabad, fearing that he was developing brain fever. A doctor examined his son and wrote on the case sheet that the disease was not brain fever. He wondered on seeing this. Usually doctors don't write like this. He thought that Sri Sai Baba himself came as doctor and relieved his tension. His son in a semiconscious state was chanting `SAI RAM SAI RAM'. The next day morning the fever subsided. The recipe for this disease was the SAI RAM SAI RAM mantra. There are innumerable experiences like this shown by Baba even after His Mahasamadhi. For want of space this writer has been compelled to omit them. These experiences confirm that Sri Sai Baba is still living with us only and guiding us in every affair. There is no disease greater than a sinful body, and no doctor greater than Sri Sai Baba of Shirdi. To be continued… ----------------------- 8. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES: "varaha_appikatla" varaha_appikatla 2/19/2005 07:25:45 –0000 Sri Shirdi Saibaba Mandir, Columbus, Ohio By Baba's Grace we are into to the 7th year of Sai Bhajans. The Sai Mandir is situated at 7670 New Market Center Way, Columbus, OH 43235.For more details please visit www.saibaba.cc or www.srishirdisaibabamandir.org The devotees have experienced lot of miracles in this mandir. I am just quoting the recent one, which happened two weeks ago. Our Mandir Priest went to buy a blanket for his 5-month-old daughter. He liked one of the blankets and found that it was bit expensive so he wanted to wait for some more time to buy in a sale. With in few days after this an old devotee came to the mandir with a blanket and asked the priest to take it. Our Priest was reluctant to take it for which she told she had a dream previous night and BABA asked her to help the priest family with a blanket. Though the devotee had fever, she came to the mandir and gave the blanket to the priest. We are witnessing his miracles every moment in our life and there is no life without HIM. Saidevotee --------------- 9. SAI WITH CHILDREN: http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad. Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Baba told before He took His Maha Samadhi that He is Muralidhar and would like to play in Booty Wada (Samadhi Mandir) with His devotees. So far you have enjoyed Krishna Leelas. Baba has also established his identity with Lord Sri Rama. Now I will take you through our epic Ramayan. Tell your parents to read the Glory of Shirdi Sai – Bi-weekly E-magazine and narrate Ramayan from this magazine. BHARATA'S PERSUASION IN VAIN: No Sooner did Bharata saw Rama than he rushed into his arms and wept bitterly and loudly with flowing tears. All the others accompanying him came with tearful eyes and met the three. Rama separated himself from the embrace of Bharata and, then, he and Lakshmana touched the feet of sage Vashishtha and the three mothers. When he came to know of his father's sad demise, Rama, grief stricken and speechless, bent his head and wept silently. Bharata wanted Rama to return to Ayodhya so he told him of his mission. Bharata persuaded Rama in vain to return to Ayodhya and ascend the throne, which he was the rightful heir to. He told it was the wish and resolve of every one in Ayodhya. Rama was firm on his decision to fulfill the vow and desire of his father. He said, " I cannot break the word I have given to my father. I shall return Ayodhya after spending fourteen years in forest. Bharata do not be obstinate, nor try to deviate me from my duty. Go back to Ayodhya." Once again all the people pleaded, but Rama would listen to none of them. Kaikeyi too, who wept bitterly and asked forgiveness from Rama for her folly, insistently beseeched him to return to Ayodhya. But none could change Rama's resolve to spend fourteen years in forest. At last Bharata said, "Brother the throne of Ayodhya belongs to you, no one except you shall sit on it. I shall never sit on the throne even for a moment. Therefore, I request you to grant me one wish. Give me your sandals, which I shall place on the throne of Ayodhya and serve the kingdom in your name for fourteen years. If you do not return at the end of fourteenth year, I shall enter the funeral pyre and burn myself to death."Rama could not deny this request. He gave Bharata his sandals which Bharata took respectfully lifting it to his forehead. He put the sandals on the royal seat atop a decorated elephant, which was brought for Rama himself. Every one bade farewell to Rama, Lakshmana and Sita and departed. Rama, Lakshmana and Sita left alone, discussed the matter of continuing their stay at Chitrakoot. Rama said, "People of Ayodhya have seen this place, and, I am afraid, they will keep on coming here to meet us. Though they love us and wish for our well being, yet they shall disturb our peace. So I think we should shift from here." Lakshmana and Sita agreed with Rama. Having agreed to shift their habitat Ram, Lakshmana and Sita moved forward to enter the interior of Dandaka forest. On their way to Dandaka forest, they paid a visit to sage Atri's cottage, where Anasuya gave Sita a variety of beautiful garments, ornaments and cosmetics, which she produced by her miraculous power. After night halt they moved further in the forest. The forest was infested with demons and they always harassed the hermits living there. Having heard the tale of woe from the hermits and peace loving people, they decided to stay there in the campus of sage Sutikshna for about ten years, and rid the people of the troubling demons. To be continued… -------------- 10. ARTICLES FROM SAI DEVOTEES: Sankaraiah Dubagunta" sainama IMMORTAL SAINT OF SHIRDI The fourteenth nama in one hundred eight glorious names of Sri Sainath Mahaprabhu is "OM SRI SAI AMARTHYAYA NAMAHA." It means "Pranavaswarupa Oh! Sainath obeisance to you who is immortal. We further adore Him in Ashttotara Satha Namavali 'Kalateetaya namaha Kaalaya namaha, Kaalakaalaya namaha (It means He has transcended the limitations of Time, Himself Time and Lord Of Eternity). When devotees do worship attributing above qualities, there should not be any doubt about the continuity of His Existence. Baba declared "I am not the body or the senses I am Sakshi (Witness)." In His words "I am not confined within this body of three and a half cubits height, I am everywhere. "Sainath though left His mortal coils on 15th Oct'1918, He continues to remain in His subtle form (Sukshma Sareera) with the option of taking stable or visible form at will i.e., Aparantaratma. Baba assured prior to His Mahasamadhi "My bones in My tomb will give you hope and confidence. Not only Myself but also My tomb would be speaking, moving and communicating with those who would surrender wholeheartedly to me. You will hear My bones speaking and discussing your welfare." (Satcharita ChapXXV) Let us realize why Sainath Prabhu declared "I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body." Please refer to chapters 43 and 44 in Satcharita and read, "Who is this Me?" In His words "Barring your name and form, there exists in you as well as in all beings a sense of Being or consciousness of Existence. That is Myself". In the same chapters Sai is defined "This pure Being, Consciousness or Brahma, the Ruler and Controller of the senses and mind is the thing Sai...He pervades all animate and inanimate things and their Inner controller and Ruler". This shows Sai is immortal, birthless and deathless. Immediately after giving up His body Baba showed to the world through the following incidents that He is Alive but His body is dead. Baba appeared in the dream of Laxman Mama Joshi on 16-10-1918 and said, "Get up soon, Bapusaheb thinks I am dead and so he won't come, you do the worship and the Kakad Arathi. "Thus Baba in His own mysterious way got maintained the continuity of daily Pujas and Arathis as usual irrespective of the condition of His body and confusion in the minds of devotees. He appeared in the dream of Dasganu Maharaj on 16-10-1918 at Pandarpur and informed of the event and that he should cover his body with ample flowers. Mr & Mrs. M.W.Pradhan also had dream visions of Baba after His Mahasamadhi. Let us note the matured and authoritative opinion of H.H.Sivananda Swamiji as seen in His foreword to Life Of Sai Baba by H.H.B.V.N Swamiji "As such, He is in a state of oneness with God and thus, even after casting aside the outer physical form, Sri Sai Baba continues His sublime work of lokahita in an invisible form through His abode of Shirdi." A positive approach to rededicate and reaffirm our unwavering faith in Shirdinath appears to be necessary as devotees are in confusion. May Sainath guide erudite scholars, humble devotees, dedicated pracharaks of Sai philosophy all over the Globe seriously to think and establish "SAI is More Alive now than when He was Living", By propagating Eleven Assurances of Baba in a more prominent way or by writing experiences of devotees after Baba's Mahasamadhi. In this process let us not criticize others however selfish they may be remembering Baba's words as stated in Chap-45 of Sri Sai Satcharita "There are innumerable saints in this world but `Our father (guru) is the Father i.e., (Real Guru). Others might say many good things but we should never forget our Guru's words." Say 'Victory to thee, Immortal Saint of Shirdi!' OM SAI SRI SAI JAYA JAYA SAI -- 11.
