4. SAI PHILOSOPHY:

SAI PHILOSOPHY FROM THE DIARY OF SAI.BA.NI.SA.

These messages are the outcome and essence of the dream sequences of

Saibanisa as given by Lord Sainath, which reflect the Sai Philosophy

and his high thinking. They carry a sense of deep meaning and are

generally thought provoking, enough to set one's thinking process.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY.

151) 28h March, 1994: Journey through life with kith and kin is like

a journey by train. On the other hand journey through "ADHYATMA" is

like an endless and a lonely journey undertaken for self-realization

152) 16h April 1994: Detachment from self, children, mother, wife,

and native place in difficult even for great saints. Confine

to "GRUHASTHASRAMA" (worldly obligations) while discharging your

responsibilities seeking Lord's blessings.

153) 22nd April 1994: Gram will germinate only when water in

sprinkled whether kept in an old cloth, or new. In the same way life

turns meaningful to both rich and poor only when divine blessings

are showered on them.

154) 23rd April 1994: "TIME" is the most precious gift of "GOD" to

mankind. This should be utilized properly without wastage, that too

in His service.

155) 30th April 1994: The thought that we are paying in this life,

for our sins committed in the past is a first step in the right

direction towards the towering "ADHYATMA".

Letter – 48 (Chapter – 51)

Dear Chakrapani,

This is my last letter, in the series

of letters on significant aspects in Sri Sai Baba's biography and

influence

of Sri Sai Satcharitra on my life, to you. Please read carefully

Chapter 51 and thoroughly understand Sri Sai before reading this

letter. I have reaped harvest of fruits from the daily devotional

reading of Sri Sai Satcharitra. These harvests of fruits have

immensely benefited me. I am sincerely wishing that you and your

contemporaries also must benefit from the magnificence of those

fruits. I am wishing to spend this life entirely as a servant of Sri

Sai. This chapter describes in detail the benefits that accrue from

reading this holy book. I am listing the fruitful results bestowed

by Sri Sai on the days of my completing daily

Devotional reading of chapter 51:

(1) On the day I completed reading chapter 51 in Guntur, my

benefactor Sri Varanasi Surya Rao called from America and

telephonically blessed me.

(2) On 23.03.91 after I completed reading chapter 51 authorities

have put their signatures on papers authorizing my trip to Korea.

(3) On the day I completed reading chapter 51 in Korea Sri Sai

appeared in the night in form of a Buddhist Monk and presented me a

silver dollar.

(4) On 27.06.91 after I completed reading chapter 51 we received the

news that you secured 1331 rank in EAMCET (Common Entrance Test for

admission to Engineering and Medical Colleges in Andhra Pradesh in

which tens of thousands of students compete).

(5) On 14.08.91 after I completed reading chapter 51 you got

admitted in Vasavi Engineering College.

(6) Today 22.02.92 after I completed reading chapter 51 Sri Sai

decided the wedding of my daughter would take place at an auspicious

time 6:58 AM on Sunday 10-5-1992.

I have experienced and benefited from the fruits reaped by daily

devotional reading of Sri Sai Satcharitra. Each person who reads

these letters with Sraddha (devotion) and Sahana / Saburi (patience)

will receive blessings and grace from Sri Sai.

In service of Sri Sai,

Your father.

7. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM SAI SATCHARITRA:

"Venkateswaraswamy Swarna": swamysv

Sai Ram. We have seen how Baba was cautioning devotees like us about

the power of Maya and also how He assured that those who take to His

worship will be protected. Now, let us see how He helped those who

lost all hope of recovering from serious illness. "One Bhimaji Patil

of Narayanagaon, Taluka Junnar, Dist. Poona, suffered in the year

1909 A.D. from a severe and chronic chest-disease which ultimately

developed into Tuberculosis. He tried all sorts of pathis

(remedies), but to no effect. Losing all hopes, he ultimately prayed

to God - "Oh Lord Narayana, help me now". It is a well known fact

that, when our circumstances are well off, we do not remember God,

but when calamities and adversities overtake us, we are reminded of

Him, So Bhimaji now turned to God."

Sai Ram. Happy events are the clouds that cover our vision. On a hot

sunny day, a cloud cover or a tree shade does give happiness for a

while. But when night comes and the cloud cover continues, we lose

our way. Or even during the day, if the cloud cover continues for

days together, we pine for the sunlight. Similarly, problems are

like a strong breeze that blow off the cloud cover and bring

sunlight into our life. It is mentioned in a story from Mahabharatha

that Kunti Devi, the mother of Pandavas, when asked by Lord Krishna

to seek a boon, asked for more troubles so that she can remember Him

that much better. Problems and difficulties are our real spiritual

friends. And when we pray to God, He sends us to spiritual Sadhakas

and through them to Saints for relief. We are indeed fortunate to be

attached to Sai's feet. If ever, we tend to forget, Sai Himself

reminds us so that our vision doesn't get clouded too long.

Sai Ram."It occurred to him that he should consult Mr. Nanasaheb

Chandorkar, a great devotee of Baba, in this respect. So he wrote to

him a letter, giving all details of his malady, and asking for his

opinion. In reply, Mr. Nanasaheb wrote to him that there was only

one remedy left, and that was to have recourse to Baba's Feet.

Relying on Mr. Nanasaheb's advice, he made preparations for going to

Shirdi. He was brought to Shirdi and taken to the Dwarakamai, and

placed before Baba. Mr. Nanasaheb and Shama (Madhavrao Deshpande)

were then present. Baba pointed out that the disease was due to the

previous evil karma, and was not at first disposed to interfere. But

the patient cried out in despair that he was helpless, and sought

refuge in Him, as He was his last hope, and prayed for mercy. Then

Baba's heart melted and He said, "Stay, cast off your anxiety, your

sufferings have come to an end. However oppressed and troubled one

may be, as soon as he steps into the Dwarakamai, he is on the

pathway to happiness. The Fakir here is very kind and He will cure

the disease, and protect all with love and kindness."

Sai Ram. Baba was the indweller of Bhimaji Patil too. He only pulled

him there. He pointed out a great spiritual truth that the problems

which we face are most probably the fruits of past deeds, either in

this birth or in the previous births. Thus He was reiterating what

Lord Krishna told Arjuna in His Gita. Baba gave a similar message

when the Ramadasi from Chennai saw Him in his dream. But Baba also

gave a great spiritual truth in this. When the bad karma is ripe,

the devotee is pulled to God/Saints and make the ego surrender to

God. Thus the bad deeds also act as correcting agents and bring one

closer to God. Sai Ram.

"The patient vomited blood every five minutes, but there was no

vomiting in the presence of Baba. From the time, Baba uttered the

words of hope and mercy, the malady took a favorable turn. Baba

asked him to stay in Bhimabai's house, which was not a convenient

and healthy place, but Baba's order had to be obeyed."

Sai Ram. This is most important to remember. Baba was giving some

instructions, which may appear contrary to common sense. But

surrender to Guru was a very important part of the cure. And this

implicit obedience helped the devotee to make further spiritual

progress too. Thus the devotees who obeyed Baba regained not only

their physical and mental health but more importantly their

spiritual health too. "While he was staying there, Baba cured him by

two dreams. In the first dream, he saw himself as a boy suffering

the severe pain of a flogging, which he received for not reciting

his 'Sawai-poetry' lesson before his class-master. In the second

dream, some one caused him intense pain, and torture, by rolling a

stone up and down over his chest. With the pain thus suffered in

dream, his cure was complete, and he went home. He then often came

to Shirdi, gratefully remembering what Baba did for him, and

prostrated before Him."

Sai Ram. By Baba's grace, Bhimaji's residual bad karma was quickly

finished. And most importantly one great spirtual truth comes out.

One should not forget favors received from fellow men or

God/Saints. "Kritaghnaghna" is one of the names of God, that means

One who destroys those who forget the good deeds of others. Lord

Satyanarayana (Vishnu) also does not spare those who forget their

promises. It is not as if God is in want of the material offerings

of the devotee. It is simply that God wants us to be pure and true

in mind, speech and action (Trikarana Suddhi). The story of

Saptashringi goddess in Satcharitra also reinforces this same

truth. "Baba also did not expect anything from devotees, but

grateful remembrance, unchanging faith and devotion. People in the

Maharashtra, always celebrate Satya-Narayana Puja in their homes

every fortnight or month. But it was this Bhimaji Patil, who started

a new Sai Satya-vrata Puja, instead of Satya-Narayana-vrata Puja, in

his house, when he returned to his village." Sai Ram. Bhimaji Patil

learnt his spiritual lesson. He also realised Sai's oneness with all

Gods including Lord Satyanrayana Swamy. Bhimaji Patil was indeed

fortunate. Let us bow to him and to Sai for this great spiritual

lesson.

Sai Ram. We will continue with the other miraculous healings in the

future issues. Sai Ram.

8.QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

"Shashi": shashi_31

13. Spiritual Evaluation Through Sri Sai Baba's Sayings

On another occasion Baba said `Yet you must use the inner enemies

within the limits. Besides Kama towards wife, have Krodha against

unrighteous, Lobha for Hari Nama, that is uttering God's name, Moha

for Mukti, Matsara for evil actions. But have no Mada (Pride)'. Mr.

Antonio Rigopulas explains `Mada is said to have no beneficial

application whatsoever. Kama or Lust triggers as the enemy number

one, and, if not controlled, is believed to favor the emergence of

Krodha and so on'. In Charters & Sayings, Pujya Sri B V Narasimha

Swamiji reports a dialogue between Baba, Mrs. Tharkad and her son.

Baba said to her : `During the many births have I said already that

I had been with you. We shall meet again and again. I have to take

care of My Children night and day and give an account of every pie

to God'.

Another teaching of Baba is `People have become bad and are giving

trouble. They are pestering me for money. Moreover, they have become

shameless. I am disgusted'. The Italian Philosopher explains "Baba

sadly pondered over man's tragic condition of ignorance. Everyone

asked for material benefits and petty things. Few were interested in

His treasure, that is priceless pearls of Moksha and the path

leading to it". Bhakthi Marga is, indeed, flexible and polymorphous.

There exists a wide range of schools of Bhakthi. We have to know

that Sri Sai Baba, besides encouraging His followers to be devoted

to their `ISTA DAIVAM' constantly emphasized on devotion to the

Guru. As Sai noted, without a guide it is difficult to tread the

path. There are tigers and bears along the path. He also says

that `I wanted nothing but the Guru, and he wanted nothing but My

love'.

Pujya Sri Narasimha Swamiji says in His Charters & Sayings, that

this bond of love uniting teacher and disciple is regarded as the

key to spiritual progress. Such a view is characteristic of Indian

culture. The importance, or better still, the weight of the Guru

figure would indeed be difficult to overestimate. Guru is the

Acharya. In India, the Guru is the instrument of His Grace and His

Grace is the only SADHANA. Jnana comes as experience.

9. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

------------------------------

- A devotee from U.S.A

11/01/2004 06:10:59 –0700

Sai Ram!

I had a dream about 3 or 4 months back about Sai. In my dream he

made me to put a plant into the ground. And I asked him, when we

have to plant a plant here? I remember he saying that you have to

keep plant in this place, because underneath this place there is my

temple. And he showed me the temple. After that dream, after a month

or so, I was pregnant. My mom told me that may be that's the symbol

that he gave you that you will get pregnant. But after two months, I

miscarried. I was very sad for two days, after that I was fine. What

I have in my mind is, he did that for good. That's all I was

thinking about my dear god. May be now, I was unable to find a good

reason, but I am sure he did that for me for good. He put me into

that small pain, to save me from a big problem.

There is a reason, why he did that. I strongly believe in that. I

strongly believe in HIM.

10. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with

children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting

Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Baba told before

He took His Maha Samadhi that He is Muralidhar and would like to

play in Booty Wada (Samadhi Mandir) with His devotees. So far you

have enjoyed Krishna Leelas. Baba has also established his identity

with Lord Sri Rama. Now I will take you through our epic Ramayan.

Tell your parents to read the Glory of Shirdi Sai – Bi-weekly E-

magazine and narrate Ramayan from this magazine.

SITA SWAYAMVARA:

When the demons were wiped out, the peace loving people and hermits

became fan of Rama and Lakshmana. The sages blessed the two

brothers. Vishvamitra, now, divided his time between prayers,

yagyas, meditation and bestowing his knowledge and warfare skills on

Rama and Lakshmana. In this way their time was passing when one day

Vishvamitra told the princes about Lord Shiva's bow. They got

curious and begged to the sage to show them the lovely bow.

Vishvamitra told them that lord Shiva's bow was in the palace of

Janaka, king of Mithila kingdom, that it was so heavy that even the

gods had been unable to string it. Then Vishvamitra told them about

King Janaka.

Janaka, the king of Mithila, had no child. He was getting anxious

with his advancing age. Once there was a great famine in his

kingdom. The king wanted to alleviate the sufferings of his people.

He consulted many sages and prayed to the gods for blessing his

kingdom with rain. His prayers did not go unheard, he was asked to

go early in the morning out of town and plough the barren land with

his own hands. As he was a kind-hearted king, he was ready to do any

thing for his people's welfare. He did as he was told. When he was

ploughing the field his plough stuck at a place and he heard the

cries of a baby. Astonished, he looked around and found a baby girl

lying in a broken earthen pot in the furrows. The king took her up

in his arms and brought her to the palace. As a reward of Janaka's

ploughing, the rain God blessed with his kingdom with rain and the

famine stricken people became happy again. King Janaka named the

girl Sita, meaning the child of Mother Earth. Sita was blessed with

not only beauty, but also with Mother Earth's qualities like

kindness, love and virtue. Some time later, his queen bore him a

baby girl, whom Janaka named Urmila.

Vishvamitra came to know of organization of swayamvara and Janaka's

vow "whoever strings the bow of Lord Shiva will marry my princess

Sita" and desired that Rama and Lakshmana should take part in it, so

he along with Rama and Lakshmana started their journey to Mithila.

The journey continued through the forest without any untoward

happening, but suddenly Rama saw a strange looking rock and asked

the sage about it. Vishvamitra told Rama, " The Rock is, in fact,

Ahalya, the virtuous wife of sage Gautham. She has been turned into

a rock by curse of her husband Gautham, because she had been defiled

by God Indra. If you touch the rock with your foot, she will be

freed from the curse. So, Rama! Free her from the curse". Hearing

this Rama touched the rock with his foot and the rock turned into a

comely woman. With folded palms she bowed before Rama and said, My

lord, this is the day I have been waiting for. I had been told that

my curse would come to an end only when your feet touched me."

Saying this Ahalya took leave and they resumed their journey.

11. ARTICLES FROM SAI DEVOTEES:

SAI SEVAK SIVANESAN SWAMY (Part 2)

Once some devotees of village RUI(3km from Shirdi) pleaded with

Swamiji for accepting a piece of land for constructing an Ashram for

him. Swamiji politely turned down the proposal "I cannot be a

watchman of the land. I am happy at the feet of Baba here". Where is

the need for him to have separate establishment when he is part and

parcel of Sai and Shirdi? On another occasion Sri Prabhakar of Datta

Venkata Sai Samajam of Kallur, Andhra Pradesh brought a jeep to take

Swamiji to Kallur(400km from Shirdi) and show the spiritual

development of the place.Swamiji told me "Tell, Prabhakar that place

is being developed because I am here. "If I leave Shirdi I cannot

stay at any one place and I have to roam about." I told another

office bearer Sri A.P.Bandodkarji who confirmed the same. This

statement confirms that Sainath sitting at Shirdi is doing the

Temple development at various places and Swamiji and Sai are not

different souls. The Sainama "Om Sai Sri Sai Jaya Jaya Sai" is being

spread throughout the globe, as the moving spirit behind this is

Sivanesan Swamiji. I had informed first Swamiji only after getting

inspiration at Shirdi to do the Nama Sankeerthana along with other

devotees in Lendi Baugh .He did Dhunipooja everyday during 1st Nama

Sankeertan programme at Shridi from 10-6-82 to 17-6-82. Wherever it

was conducted, Swamiji used to give udhi, Thritha etc. Encouraging,

devotees of various centers to do Namajapa is a memorable Saiseva

done by him. We learn from chapt.X of Sri Sai Satcharita that

Baba "Though He ate, He had no taste and though He saw, He never

felt any interest in what He saw. He was as perfect a celibate as

Hanuman".Devotees who observed Swamiji confirm the above facts. I

had never seen him drinking plain water. He always drinks Baba`s

Tirth. Rare he accepts Dakshina even that amount he spends on

purchasing meals coupons, books, photos, and feeding cows with fresh

green grass. There were occasions when he arranged Rail/Bus fares to

deserving devotees. Perhaps to teach us he did so.

Swamiji respects other saints-Chief among them are Videhi Sati

Anasuya Matha of paradsinga, Avadhoota Rami Reddy Tata of Kallur,

Devi Mayamma of Kanyakumari, Nampally Baba of Hyderabad. First two

saints visited Shirdi and had discussion in their language with

Swamiji. He encourages devotees doing parayana of holy books,

Dhunipooja, Pradakshanas to Nanda Deep, Dattatreya , Gurustan,

lighting of lamps in Dwaraka Mai. He considers Srikshetra Shridi as

holy as any other place. It seems when Swamiji wanted to leave

Shirdi he got letter from H.H. Sivananda Swamiji stating " If I get

a chance of staying at Shirdi I shall not miss it". In His foreword

to Life of SaiBaba by Saivyas B.V. Narasimha Swamiji . H.H.Sivananda

Swamiji writes " Saibaba has sanctified and rendered Shirdi one of

the holiest places upon earth and a shrine of devout pilgrimage to

countless people". Such is the sacredness of shirdi. Sri. P.Jyothi

Raja (Phone:040-3220119) a portrait Artist of Hyderabad was chosen

by Sainath to draw Dwarakamai potrait through H.H. Sivanesan Swamy.

Sri Raja went to Shirdi in the first week of January'1990 with other

Sai brothers. They all went to Sivanesan Swamiji's room to pay their

respect as usual. Though Sri.Raja's first visit he also accompanied.

Sri Swamiji turned to Mr.Jyothi Raja and said "Baba wants to draw

His portrait. I conveyed His message. I don't know Baba's intention.

If you like you can start the work." It was a pleasant surprise to

Mr.Raja. After discussions with Samsthan authorities Sri.Raja

started the work in the 3rd week of the January'1990. The artist

told me no remuneration was demanded as the offer to draw Rajadhi

Raja Yogi Raja Para Bramha Satchithanandha Sainath Maharaj protriat

itself was more valuable.

H.H Sivanesan Swamiji garlanded and did Harathi to Dwarakamai photo

drawn by Sri .JayaKar and blessed the Artist. Sri Raja took a vow

not to take lunch till the portriat was completed. On the 5th day he

felt hungry and desired to have food, violating self imposed

restriction. Swamiji who knew everything sent "Thali" (plate with

food items) offered to Sainath as Naivedya through Christiana

alias "Om Sai". Raja was happy to have Baba's Prasad, which he

considered as a great blessing. It appears this Prasad gave him

strength and concentration. The work was completed on

13th,April'1990. He handed over the portriat after Harathi by

H.H.Sivanesan Swamy to Samsthan Authorities. Swamiji directed in the

year 1993 some devotees of U.S.A. to contact Jyothi Raja for Baba's

protriat in different poses. It is said that saints are not alive or

dead because of body. Swamiji was aware of the fact that the

decaying body had to be given up. He never allowed human efforts for

curing his throat disease. He lived on Udhi and holy thirtha during

that period. Perhaps approval of 108 Glorious names of himself was

His last act with body. Kum.Sailaja, Chief Sevika of Rama

Sannidhanam (Home for the orphans) Hyderabad Tel: 040-7134877 sent

as her monumental Guru Dakshina in the form of this Namavali to

Swamiji. He took the paper containing the 108 names kept on His eyes

and chest and returned to the giver prior to a couple of seconds of

giving up of His mortal coils. Swamiji who never allowed to touch

his feet or say a word of gratitude for the benefit conferred on any

devotee through Him. (He always attributes everything to Sai only)

took the namavali and blessed. Perhaps it was Sainath who blessed

108 Glorious names of Sivanasen Swamiji for the sake of lakhs of

Shirdi followers who considered him as Gurudev.

Let us take advantage of this blessing and repeat Swamiji`s Ashtotra

Satha Namavali as many times as possible and enjoy Sai bliss.

Swamiji left his mortal coils on 12th febraury 1996. The mortal

remains were preserved at "SATHGURU SHIVANASEN SWAMIJI`S MAHASAMADHI

STHAL" which is about two and half km from Shirdi on Pimple-vadi

road. This land belongs to Mehurdhun Endowments Shirdi/Bombay. The

trust has various service oriented plans for the benefit of

humanity. Civil works are going on very fast. May Sai Sivanasen

Swamiji bless Mrs. Zarineji of the Trust to complete the project in

a recorded time, so that, the fruits can be enjoyed by one and all.

Shirdi pilgrimage perhaps is incomplete wihout visiting Swamiji`s

Maha Samadhi where Akhand Deep and Akhand Dhuni are maintained in a

quite and calm place.

Edition of Shri Sai Satcharita by Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji was

published in January, 1954. Gunaji offered naivedya in the form of
