DUTY IS DIVINE

Baba said, "You do your duty, don’t be afraid in the least, steady your mind and

have faith in My words" in Sri Sai Satcharitra, Ch. III.

An astrologer once visited a village and made it clear to the village folk that

they would not be blessed by rain that year. The simple villagers took the

astrologer seriously and said to one another: "As we will not get rain, why

should we bother to plough our field and sow seeds?" But a single solitary

farmer attended as usual to the work of ploughing his field and sowing seeds in

it. At the same time he kept on chanting the Divine name.

A huge cloud, all of a sudden, appeared in the skies. Seeing this farmer

exerting so much, the cloud enquired of him why he was taking so much trouble

of working on the field: "You have been forewarned that the season this year

would be dry?" reminded the cloud.

The farmer retorted: "It is my duty to plough and sow seeds in the soil. I am

discharging my duty even though the season is supposed to be dry. It is up to

you to do your duty of giving rain. Whether you do your duty or not, it is your

look-out. Leave me alone to attend to my work."

The cloud was so much pleased with the farmer that it showered rain on his piece

of land and made it fertile. Thus the farmer reaped a bumper harvest.

A disciple of Sri Krishna ventured out on a cold, wintry night. On the way, he

found a beggar, without any clothes on his body.

"I am shivering in the cold," cried the beggar. "Will you not, in the name of

Sri Krishna, give me a garment with which I may cover my body and save myself

from this intense cold?"

The disciple was wearing a shawl. "This shawl can be cut into two," he said

himself. "One half of this I can give to this poor man, the other half is

sufficient to protect me from this biting cold."

So thinking, he took of his shawl, tore it into two, gave one half of the shawl

to the poor man and wore the other half himself.

On that very night, he had a dream, in which he saw Sri Krishna wearing only half a shawl.

Astonished, he asked, "Master, how is it that You have put on only half a shawl?"

Sri Krishna said to him, "This is all that you gave me!"
