Guest guest
Om Sai Ram "The Times of India", TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2004 12:05:56 PM ] published an article by ARUN KUMAR DAS "In God they trust for votes!" Below is this article in a little short form. Man proposes, God disposes. So, with the Lok Sabha elections coming up, the powers-that-be are seeking the intervention of the Supreme Power to draw votes in their favour. In the Capital’s context, following Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit’s holy trip to Amritsar ’s Golden Temple along with her entire cabinet, it is now the turn of Delhi Congress president Chaudhury Prem Singh to visit Vrindavan and seek blessings from the Almighty for the party’s victory in the forthcoming elections. ‘‘I am a frequent visitor to the Gobardhan shrine in Vrindavan and feel immense peace at this holy place,’’ shares Prem Singh, ‘‘In fact, I always visit Vrindavan before and after elections. This time too I will visit the shrine and seek blessings for my party.’’ Yes, the X factor is at work. Beyond the usual suspects — a listing of ‘achievements’, tall promises and, of course, mud-slinging between rival parties — politicians are banking on help from divine quarters. So, Karol Bagh BJP MP Anita Arya is set to visit Vaishno Devi... accompanied by the twin wishes of securing a ticket to contest the polls and, then, going on to win. ‘‘Apart from Vaishno Devi, I visit numerous shrines in Delhi as I have great faith in the Almighty,’’ says Arya. Another neta going the devotee way is South Delhi BJP MP Vijay Kumar Malhotra. ‘‘I am a regular visitor to the Hanuman temple in Connaught Place ,’’ says Malhotra, ‘‘After the elections, I might visit Vaishno Devi with my family.’’ Simultaneously, East Delhi MP Lal Behari Tiwari will seek blessings at the Balaji temple in Mehndipur, Rajasthan, to ensure his party’s victory in the elections. ‘‘Besides, I visit the Hanuman temple in Yamuna Bazaar regularly,’’ he adds. Different devotees, a similar aim — victory in the elections. In simple-speak, our God-fearing netalog are literally moving heaven and earth to ensure victory at the hustings. Not without reason. ‘‘After winning hands down in the Delhi assembly polls, the stakes are high for the Congress in the Lok Sabha elections,’’ informs a member of the team which accompanied Dikshit to the Golden Temple recently. The major political parties apart, the stakes are also high for aspiring candidates such as Congress MLA Ram Babu Sharma, who has set his sights on the party ticket for the East Delhi seat. ‘‘I am hopeful of getting the nod from the party high command. Given the chance to contest the Lok Sabha polls, I will seek the blessings of Shirdi Sai Baba. Even otherwise, I am a frequent visitor to different shrines in the city,’’ says Sharma. Similarly, Dharamvir Yadav also sees himself as a prospective Congress candidate for the polls. ‘‘If I succeed in getting a party ticket, I will definitely visit Vrindavan,’’ he reveals.
