Guest guest
A WORRY SHARED IS A WORRY HALVED Worry is one of the gravest problems of mankind. It is quite common in this modern age of stress and strain. I am talking about the worry that is unwarranted, that is imaginary that perturbs one’s calm and snatches away the night’s sleep. It is a product of a discordant mind. Worry is a sort of circular thinking that spins around aimlessly, ends nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Worry is repenting for mistakes of the past, fearing uncertainties of the future and escaping responsibilities of present. Worry is a kind of mental disease; mother of many physical ailments like insomnia, abnormal blood pressure, nervous breakdown, indigestion, gastric or peptic ulcers etc., If you feel fed up and want to get rid of worries, you had better force your mind to take interest in some creative purposeful work, so that it becomes too busy to entertain unnecessary worry. Worry starts when your life force is bottled up. If you honestly wish to get rid of needless worry; first make sure what exactly is worrying you. Make a list of problems that are pricking your mind. You will then see that many of them are baseless and others are amenable to solution. Noting down your problems gives a vent to your feelings; it often clears the mind and relieves us of worry to a large extent. Do not take your worries to bed. Night is a time for rest. The only time to worry is when you can actually grapple with the problems. Attend to the problem instead of worrying about it. Suppose you had to write an urgent letter but is somehow escaped your memory. You realize the omission only when you were going to sleep. You had better get up and write that letter. On the other hand, if you let it weigh on your mind, it will only make you tense and sleeplessness all night. Some people try to do much more than they should; they assume responsibilities, which may not be wholly theirs. They dislike the idea of sharing responsibility with others because they consider them either unreliable or fear that they will not do the job as well as they themselves can. A worry shared is a worry halved. So, don’t hesitate to talk out your worries to your friends and well wishers. This will lighten your mind and give you the benefit of valuable advice or even practical help. To overcome worry some people take to intoxicants, smoking or drinking. These do afford some relief but it is only short-lived. On the other hand habitual use of these things eventually multiply their miseries by adding to their financial burden and endangering their health. An infallible method of overcoming worry is to develop a mental attitude that refuses to magnify trifling problems of daily life. Fondness for work, positive thinking and an optimistic outlook will help smoothen the problem-ridden course of life. (Dr. Y.R.
