Guest guest
Aum Sai Ram, (Source........Sri Lalita Sahasranama printed by Sri Ramakrishna Math) ................If Ishwara as we said above, is a spiritual conception of the Absolute ,Ishwari or Shakthi or Devi is certainly an equally valid one .And ,as we generally fear our fathers and love our mothers ,the concept of a mother-Goddess appeals more to our heart than that of a father -god. Also ,in the representation of a female deity ,there is more scope for grace and beauty ,and hence for greater poetry and art .Accordingly in Lalitsahasranama ,which is a stotra addressed to a Goddess ,we see poetry and romance ,religion and philosophy ,occultism and psychology vying with one another in coining names for the deity .The author has embodied in this litany not only the Puranic story of Lalita and her fight with the demon Bhanda ,but also the philosophy and the ritual of Sri Vidya .The most striking feature of the hymn is the perfect balance it maintains between its pure poetry and its technical theology by means of the genuine religious spirit which runs through it.In dealing with his subject-matter ,the author had to avoid two pitfalls .On the one hand there was the danger of his litany becoming a purely secular poem like the Agamani songs addressed to the Goddess by the Bengali poets of the later day ,and , on the other hand ,there was the danger of hymn becoming a mere exposition of a system of theology like the Tantras of an earlier day.
