4. SAI PHILOSOPHY:

SAI PHILOSOPHY FROM THE DIARY OF SAI.BA.NI.SA.

These messages are the outcome and essence of the dream sequences of

Saibanisa as given by Lord Sainath, which reflect the Sai Philosophy

and his high thinking. They carry a sense of deep meaning and are

generally thought provoking, enough to set one's thinking process.

Translated and presented by RAGHU RAMAN SATULURY.

145) 20th November 1993: Helping a stranger in trouble may some times

scare him .It is but natural. Help them unobtrusively if required and

forget about them.

146) 30th November 1993: Do not worship God with the borrowed money

to avoid harassment from the people who lent it.

earthworm. The earthworm purifies the soil and helps the farmer in

getting a good crop. Lead a life that is useful to others.

148) 6th January, 1994: Shed "AHANKARA" just as a cobra sheds it's

superficial layer of skin periodically and becomes a garland of

LORD "SHIVA".

149) 18th February 1994: The temples built for God are temporal.

Establish a direct link and depend upon the endless resource of

cosmic energy radiating from the "LORD" for spiritual growth.

150) 11th March 1994: Water is the basic necessity for life to

survive and traces its origin to the lotus feet of "LORD SREEHARI".

Letter – 47 (Chapter – 50)

Dear Chakrapani,

Sri Hemadri Pant narrated stories of prominent Sai devotees in this

chapter. Recognize the Divine Love showered by Sri Sai on HIS

devotees. You must also make efforts to earn that Divine Love from

Sri Sai. You will recall, from my yesterday's letter, the reason why

I am writing this letter from Visakhapatnam. Yesterday I went to Sri

Sanyasi Rao's house at 5 PM and finalized the alliance of your elder

sister with their elder son Chiranjeevi (prefix, meaning with long

life, used for a young person) Ramakrishna. They did not ask for any

dowry. They gave a list of traditional wedding gifts to groom and

relatives, the list had Sri Sai written on top of the page and I

happily agreed for all. Sri Sanyasi Rao said that he will get the

auspicious time and day, for the event, fixed today and intimate me

the same. I believe that by Sri Sai's grace I will be able to

successfully perform the wedding in Hyderabad. Let us wait and see. I

used to hold grudge against some of our relatives till yesterday and

before my arrival in Visakhapatnam. This day early in the morning Sri

Sai, in the form of an unknown person, appeared in my dream and

introduced himself as Prema Das (a name literally meaning servant of

love) and woke me up from my sleep. I then read the early morning

harati of Sri Sai. I resolved that from that moment that I will not

become angry with any person. Sri Sainath only can assist me in

keeping the resolution. My sister, your aunt gave me this morning, a

framed picture of Sri Sai, which was worshipped by my father 40 years

ago. That framed picture was wrapped in a green cloth and given to me

as I was about to commence daily devotional reading of Sri Sai

Satcharitra.

Probably Sri Sainath was very fond of that green colour. Sri Sai, in

the form of that framed picture, wore that green coloured cloth for

about 35 years. I could visualize my late father in that frame on

seeing that framed picture of Sri Sai. I kept that picture on a table

and commenced daily devotional reading of chapter 50. I was wonder

struck reading about an incident in that chapter – "The person, who

decided to go to Shirdi and have darshan of Sri Sai, was greatly

astonished on realizing that the same person, in the form of a framed

picture, is ready to bless him there itself." I am in Visakhapatnam

and believe that Sri Sai has come, in the form of that framed

picture, there and blessed me. Sri Sai gave a beautiful message in

this chapter – "You must not think that you are the doer of any good

or bad action. Be free from ego and pride. Only then there will be

growth in your consideration for others." Balaram Dhurandhar wrote

Sant Thukaram's biography in Marathi language. I have written the

effect of Sri Sai Satcharitra on my life in the form of letters to

you. Your help is needed in publishing these letters in Telugu and

English for the benefit of younger generation and for propagating Sri

Sai's philosophy.

In service of Sri Sai,

Your father.

7. SPIRITUAL GEMS FROM

SAI SATCHARITRA

"Swamy" svswamy1

24 Oct 2004 14:05:51 -0000

Sai Ram. So far we have enjoyed the glitter from the many Spiritual

Gems that Sai has so kindly allowed us to take out from the ocean of

Sai Satcharitra. It is not that we have really exhausted the gems

from the first 12 chapters. As we keep reading Satcharitra, we will

get more and more of the gems depending upon our eligibility to learn

from them. Anyway, let us now take up the Spiritual Gems from Chapter

13 of Sai Satcharitra. Sai Ram.

Sai Ram. Though fully liberated from the shackles of Maya, Sai used

to talk of His being troubled by Maya, for the sake of His devotees.

In a way, He identified Himself with His devotees and was guiding

them indirectly, just as He sided with Rohilla when he was shouting

kalmas from the Holy Quran at the top of his voice. He said, "Though

I have become a Fakir, have no house or wife, and though leaving off

all cares, I have stayed at one place, the inevitable Maya teases Me

often. Though I forgot Myself I cannot forget Her. She always

envelops Me.This Maya (illusive power) of the Lord (Shri Hari) teases

God Brahma and others; then what to speak of a poor Fakir like Me?

Those who take refuge in the Lord will be freed from Her clutches

with his grace". In such terms Baba spoke about the power of Maya.

He was no doubt free from all the troubles of Maya but spoke thus for

the sake of His devotees like us. Bookish knowledge is of no use in

overcoming Maya. Pureness of heart, obtained by surrender to Guru/God

is the only sure means for overcoming Maya. Lord Shri Krishna has

said to Uddhava in the Bhagwat that the Saints are His living forms;

and see what Baba had said for the welfare of His devotees: "Those

who are fortunate and whose demerits have vanished; take to My

worship. If you always say 'Sai, Sai' I shall take you over the seven

seas; believe in these words, and you will be certainly benefited. I

do not need any paraphernalia of worship - either eight-fold or

sixteen-fold. I rest there where there is full devotion". Now read

what Sai, the friend of those, who surrendered themselves to Him, did

for their welfare.

Sai Ram. See how Baba identified Himself with Krishna in this

paragraph. In the earlier paragraph, He identified Himself with His

simple devotees. Here, He is identifying Himself with Sri Hari. That

is how, He is able to give the assurance that continuous remembrance

of Him is the simple and sure means of getting across this Bhava

Sagara of Maya. Faith begets power. And as Sai said, only those whose

demerits have vanished or atleast those whose merits have become

preponderant, take to His worship. Very soon, they realize that Sai

is ready to take all their burdens on Himself and true surrender is

what is needed from their side. And as they surrender, they

experience His grace more and more.

We will take up in the next issue, the various cures that were

obtained by people who lost all hope and surrendered to Sai.

Yours truly,

SV Swamy

8.QUINTESSENCE OF SRI SAIBABA'S PHILOSOPHY:

(By Late Sri Bharam UmamaheswaraRao)

13. Spiritual Evaluation Through Sri Sai Baba's Sayings

In order to elucidate Sri Sai Baba's Teachings more clearly, it is

important to understand the spiritual horizon from which we derive

inspiration. Thus it is useful to explore the religious text

mentioned by the sources. Baba advised us to read such books.

Sri Sai Baba's Teachings are dedicated to the orthodoxy and

individual and social ethics, as well as to function of Karma and the

way it operates. Sri Sai Baba always insists on `VAIRAGYA'. It must

be in a disciple treading the arduous path of Brahma Jnana, the

Detachment must be radical from the terrestrial as well as from the

celestial. He always says celestial aspirations include the pursuit

of heavenly realms and Siddhis.

Baba always taught His devotees to lead a normal life,

discouraging `mystical flights' and condemning ascetic excesses. He

used to encourage very few to take the path of Sanyasam. The

important teaching of Baba is awakening the mind to crucial

existential issues - who gives? Who receives? Are the classical

interpretations, which a wise person must consider? Baba advises

meditation on the fundamental questions: - WHO AM I? WHO ARE WE? Such

a call to tread the path of `Jnana Marga'. Baba's Teachings are based

on various orientations, intertwine and are fused in perspective,

which nonetheless exalts the prominence of the `Bhakthi Element'.

Baba always discouraged conversion from one religion to another. He

also seldom encouraged the abandonment of family life and social

ties. Sai always insists on a mental form of `NAMA SMARANA' which

makes His devotees to engage in spiritual practices.

Baba's ways of teachings are peculiar and different in the case of

different individuals. Once Baba taught the Upanishad to Das Ganu

thru the servant maid to show the girl's happiness lay not in the

external sari, which she had thrown away, but within herself. Baba

says be content with what God gives you. Baba always stresses the

importance of Nama Smarana. He asked Das Ganu to study the Vishnu

Sahasranamam and also advised him to translate `ISHA UPANISHAD' into

Marathi. This Upanishad contains only 18 verses. This Upanishad

prescribes contentment with what God gives. Baba always taught "True

wealth and joy lie within a man. Thus one must accept whatever comes.

Paradoxically, joy is found in renunciation and in cultivation non-

attachment. An Italian Philosopher Mr. Antonio Rigopulas in his

book `THE LIFE & TEACHINGS OF SAI BABA OF SHIRIDI' has

written "Renunciation is not the negation of something positive, it

is quite the opposite, that is the abandonment of what is ultimately

unreal and is not worthy of our attention. Actually, it signifies the

discarding of all the obstacles that prevent God from filling our

emptiness". Baba always advises conquering the six enemies. If they

are conquered waves of passion will not arise. Else they will enslave

you. If they are subordinated and reason made the commandant, then

the delusive pleasures will no longer hold sway over you.

9. DEVOTEES EXPERIENCES:

Wednesday, October 20, 2004 6:58:52 PM

Dear Sai Devotees,

I don't know how to describe or write about the leelas of Baba. I

simply inform about them in simple language and in short. Today the

20th Oct, it is sapthmy (7th day). Udhi was coming from the photo of

Baba in the house of my sister in Columbia where we (myself and Mrs.

Veena Gupta) are staying at present. The

characters/characters `OM' `RAM' `SHAM' were also visible, written

with Udhi on the big photo of Baba. Today morning as Mrs. Gupta

started her pooja and was worshiping and singing about Maa Durga,

sindoor appeared on the forehead and hands of Maa Durga. It appeared

to be trishool. It is difficult to describe the feelings at that

time. Mrs. Gupta continued her pooja with tears in her eyes. Although

I have taken the photo of Maa Durga and the whole mandir, but will be

able to send it only after 22nd Oct when I download it on my laptop

at Atlanta, when I reach there. Tomorrow is Thursday, Baba's day and

Mrs. Gupta will be holding Sai Amrit Vani here in Columbia at my

sister's place, who is also a strong devotee of Baba. (Sai Amrit Vani

in Hindi and English is available in many of the file

section.)

Baba has helped our family several times. As I was the youngest

child in the family and my father retired 15 years back and during

which I was in 8th grade in the school. One of my wish was to show my

parents how much I love them, though several times we had

misunderstandings between each other. It was a long way through I had

to complete my schooling, get a degree and get a job. My mom is a

believer in Baba. But I never paid attention so much in worshipping

until one day I met a special person in my life. Through her I was

accepted by Baba. I realized how much Baba loves his devotees. I even

could go to Shirdi to take his blessings.

One of them is when my father was not well. He had severe problems of

lungs, paralysis, body infection and his memory was lost. I had no

money for his hospitalization. Every one thought he will not survive.

I had a hope on Baba. I prayed him each time when I thought he is

going away from me. I was in a terrible situation. I sold off every

thing I had since my savings was very small and I had plans for my

future. Then something was inside me saying I am there for you and I

can get it was Baba who is trying to tell me he is with me. As he was

admitted in the hospital for about 3 months out of which about 40

days he was in the ICU. I did not have enough money to keep him in

the special ward when he was feeling better at times and doctors felt

that it was not required to keep him in the ICU as medicines prices

to treat his multiple problems was very high. The doctors even told

me to take him and there is nothing they can do for him. One day he

was almost dying and I thought that must be end of his day. I was in

pain to see him suffering. Even doctors where not attending him that

time. Suddenly somehow I went and gathered about 5 doctors and

doctors found that he has vocal cord paralysis due to other body

paralysis and his throat was also choked up for about an hour. People

gathered to see what's happening and there was a loud breathing sound

that my father is still strong enough to breath though he was lean

and weak to do so. I was alone with him then. The operation was

performed immediately even though there was a threat to his life as

he had multiple problems including body infection and his throat was

punctured. After the operation was over I saw his body was swollen

and there was still danger. Finally he was recovering. Meanwhile I

got a job offer in Korea. I gave my responsibilities to my brother

who was not seeing them for about 4 years. He heard this and came

home back to see dad. After some time as doctors said it may be still

difficult for him to survive. We got him home and each day I prayed

to God and after sometime I could hear him speak softly. Now that he

can walk using support. Atleast we can see him and talk to him now.

He can see his children and grandchildren grown up.

2nd one is when I came back home. I heard aunty is admitted for

cancer who is a widow and has a son who is in school. The treatment

was in 2nd stage. I prayed to Baba and called her to Bangalore. By

Baba's grace I can now spend on her medication. I lost one aunt when

I was in college when she had kidney failure and she was given 3 days

time. I told Baba let her see her child grow and then take her. Let

him not leave his son alone orphan. Now she is going under treatment

and the report says she is getting well. Baba now that I ask you one

thing and you know it very well. Please Baba, you know how much I

like this person and we are away from each other. You know very well

the pain of being far away from someone. I tried many ways and each

time the person went more far away and away. This person has gone

away to an extent of misunderstanding that I get pain and by brain

pains thinking about her. Baba you know well. Now that I am not going

to do anything because there is nothing left to do. I am leaving it

to you Baba. You have to take care of this Baba. You know very well

about what is going in my mind if I lose this person. Baba, why is

there so much of differences between us. Why is not that person

thinking good about me. What did I do so much in my past life that I

am suffering so much? Baba You know well that I have chosen one in my

life and till the end of my life I will be thinking about her. I have

not done in this life Baba anything Bad, It's all left in your hands

Baba. I keep everything in your feet. I don't blame anyone for this

it is all in my fate Baba. Baba if I am born in a family where they

believe in 2 different religions what is my fault in this Baba? I am

only living a life what he gave I have no choice Baba. Please Baba

show these person the courage to overcome these thoughts, and courage

for me to overcome all what is happening.

Baba thanks a lot for proving me with so many things in life, which

was only a dream sometime back. Thanks for the house I got after so

much hardship.

10. SAI WITH CHILDREN:

http://www.saidarbar.org/HTML/portraits/7.jpg

Smt. Madhu Gopal Ravada, Saidarbar, Hyderabad.

Hello Children! I am Madhu aunty. Do you know Baba use to play with

children and used to tell stories to them? I felt children visiting

Saidarbar should be entertained with good stories. Baba told before

He took His Maha Samadhi that He is Muralidhar and would like to play

in Booty Wada (Samadhi Mandir) with His devotees. So far you have

enjoyed Krishna Leelas. Baba has also established his identity with

Lord Sri Rama. Now I will take you through our epic Ramayan. Tell

your parents to read the Glory of Shirdi Sai – Bi-weekly E-magazine

and narrate Ramayan from this magazine.

FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH DEMONS:

When they reached the bank of river Sarayu, they bathed in the

river, then Vishwamitra taught Rama and Lakshmana, some mantras and

told them that with the help of those spells they would be able use

their physical power and energy more effectively. The sage taught

them some other incantations also with the help of which they would

be able to control their thirst, hunger and sleep. With the chanting

of mantras Rama and Lakshmana felt themselves infused with new energy

and increased power. They crossed the river and entered the dense

forest, the land of sages engaged in meditation, tapasya and yagas.

They were passing through the thick forest. Beside the sweet chirping

of birds, cool and pleasant breeze, rustling of leaves and greenery

everywhere, there were cries and roars of wild animals, shrieks of

demons renting the air which some times turned the peaceful and

pleasant atmosphere into an eerie one. Passing through the forest

Vishwamitra told Rama and Lakshmana that there in that forest lived a

demoness, named Tataki, who attacked and killed every one who passed

that way. Vishwamitra said to Rama, "Tataki has let loose a reign of

terror. People live in mortal dread of her. Rama, your first task is

to free the forest of her dread.

Hearing the sage's words, Rama twanged his bow, the gigantic demoness

Tataki appeared on the scene whose eerie laughter echoed in the

forest. The furious demoness shrieked, "Who dare twang his bow in my

forest?" then her eyes caught Rama and Lakshmana along with

Vishwamitra and she cried, "Old man, you have brought these lads for

your protection." She licked her lips and said "Oh, ho! Such a tender

boys, how delicious meal will they make! Old man has brought

delicious meal for me." Saying thus she took hold of large rock and

threw it at Rama and Lakshmana, which was split into pieces by their

sharp arrows. On her failure she foamed with anger and made herself

invisible and began to shower huge rocks on them, but by their sharp

arrows Rama and Lakshmana destroyed them in the mid air. To end the

game of hide and seek, Rama, guided by her shrieks and laughter,

aimed and cast an arrow and killed the demoness. She fell on the

ground with a loud and painful cry and lay there dead. Thus she met

her end.

The Gods in heaven were pleased at Rama's exploit and Vishwamitra

blessed Rama and Lakshmana . Vishwavamitra, then, gave some divine

weapons to Rama and told that with the help of those he would be

victorious over his enemies. Their journey over the rough terrain

continued. Led by Vishwamitra the princes soon reached the sage's

Ashram, named Siddhashrama. The sage had built his hermitage at a

calm and beautiful place. The princess were heartily received by

Vishwamitra's disciples. When Vishwamitra performed the rituals, Rama

and Lakshmana, alert and watchful, stood guard. Every thing went well

for five days. No demon disturbed the sage's prayers, yagas and

meditations. But their peace was disturbed on the sixth day. When

Vishwamitra and his disciples started the yaga by lighting the sacred

fire, a shower of blood and flesh started. The princes saw towards

the sky and found a horde of demons hovering above. The demons were

led by Mareecha and Subahu. They turned the bright morning into a

dark night by covering the whole sky and creating a dust storm. But

alert and prepared Rama and Lakshmana dauntlessly started a massacre

of demons. Rama threw Mareecha hundreds of miles away with the use of

divine weapon and killed Subahu. Thereafter Rama and Lakshmana

jointly eliminated the multitude of demons. The sages heaved a sigh

of relief.

11. ARTICLES FROM SAI DEVOTEES

Sankaraiah Dubagunta" sainama

SAI SEVAK SIVANESAN SWAMY

(PART - 1)

"A saint only can understand another saint." Being an ordinary man,

any attempt on my part to depict a saint's life is a feat. Hence at

the outset I prostrate to the Holy Feet of Sainath Maharaj and invoke

His grace for penning the following limited points which can be

shared by Sai children of today and tomorrow for understanding Sai's

philosophy. Baba told shama who sought permission for writing Sai

Satcharitra "When his ego is completely annihilated and there is left

no trace of it, I Myself shall enter into him and Myself shall write

my life."(Chaptar 2 of Sri SaisatCharithra) We read in Chap 43 &

44 "I am dependent on him who thinks and hungers after Me and who

doesn't eat anything with first offering to Me. He who thus comes to

Me becomes one with Me, just as a river gets to the sea and becomes

merged (one) with it). Again in Chap 2 while stressing the importance

of a Guru Baba said " The Guru will take you straight to your

destination avoiding wolves tigers and ditches etc. on the way. If

there be no guide, there is the danger of your being lost in the

jungles or falling into ditches." Those who intimately moved with

Swamiji know His surrenderence to Sai is total without a particle of

ego and no second passes without Sai's rememberance. His selfless and

tireless service is beyond comparision and endeared himself to one

and all.

His simple talk to devotees in their mother tongue made devotees with

little inclination towards real goal hunger after Sai. Having seen

the route to destination He acted as perfect guide to make us reach

the goal surely and safely. Hope all known devotees will endorse the

above facts. He was born on 12th April 1927 (Sri Rama Navami Day) at

Nayakkarpalem in Coimbatore Dist of TamilNadu, India; with indication

of spiritual significance viz two front teeth and jata on the

backside of his head. This babe was named Sivanesan. Muthiah was his

Guru. No doubt H.H Sivanada Swamy of Rishikesh, H.H. Nityananda Swamy

of Ganeshpuri had influenced Swamiji's spiritual career. The

book 'Jeeva Brahmaikhya Rahasyam' also was his guide. While

surmounting mundane difficulties He reached Shirdi via Bombay,

Vajreswary, Nasik and Trayambak. During His short but sweet stay in

the divine company of H.H Nityanandaswamy He got an invitation in a

dream "Come to Shirdi" one more reminder also was received He missed

His way to Shirdi from Nasik and went to Trayambak and stayed in

Mauni Baba's ashram. The fakir(Baba) reminded "Why do you stay there

I asked you to come to Shirdi." At last Sri Sivanesan who later

dearly called Baba, Swamiji, Gurudev, Satguru and Jagatguru." by

countless Sai devotees landed on the holy land of Sri Kshetra Shirdi

shortly after SaiRamaNavami celebration in the year 1953. Perhaps

runanubanda made Saimaharaj invite him to Shirdi. In Baba's words "He

(Devotee) will be drawn to Shirdi like sparrow with a thread tied to

its Feet." The purpose of His taking body might be to further develop

Saism with Sai soul in his body. Mr.R.V.Menon wanted me to bring udhi

from Shirdi through Shivanesan Sadhu sitting in Dwarakamai. I asked

the Sadhu "Who is Shivanesan Sadhu? Why? What for?"Mr.R.V.Menon

wanted udhi.Collect while going back, I am Shivaneshan." was the

prompt reply. Innocently I asked seeing his simplest dress "How about

your food and money? What for money? I need 75 paise for a washing

soap to clean the clothes. Regarding food it is plenty in Sai's

Darbar." Was his instant reply. I have yet to understand what is the

significance of "washing clothes and 75 paise" Baba burns our sins

and desires in the ever burning dhuni. Same evening a railway

employee from Perambur workshop Chennai was introduced to me. He got

relief from Sai Maharaj for a problem , which could not be treated by

any doctor. To express his gratitude every year he visits Shirdi on

31,December and Hajamalan 1st,January. I observed he was prostrating

to Swamiji followed by Samstan Pujaris. I was surprised and felt bad

for not even wishing Swamiji a Namaskar. The next day morning before

Kakad Harati I went to Chavadi, I saw Swamiji was sitting in

Padmasana. With borrowed faith I prostrated LO! Swamiji was sitting

above ground level without any support. This reveals his Yogasampada.

In the evening I was talking to the boy to postpone his Bombay visit

in view of Proposed strike by Public Transport Workers Union Bombay.

Swamiji while passing to Lendi baugh stopped near us and repeated

what all

We were discussing. Is it not an indication of his omnipresence?
