The fact that it is addressed to Surya, the Sun God, does not mean that it has to be recited at dawn only. Bhagawan Baba has said that "The Gayatree Mantra is an embellishment of the Pranava Sabda or Aum Mantra." The Gayatree Mantra is so potent and so powerful that that those who recite it with piety and with a pure heart are initiated into Adhyatmic life. In Adhyatmic life, the intellect and the instinct step aside and give way to Intuition; Intuition is the Unknowable; that which is not knowable but which is felt or sensed; that which is not seen by the intellect but by the Heart Bhagawan often advises young people to recite the Gayatree Mantra when they are bathing or before they eat. When they are taking their bath, they are cleaning their physical body, they should also clean their mind of all bad and negative thoughts .When they eat they must thank God for their food so that the food is first offered to God. At 9 pm Parthi time, everybody retires to bed. An extract from Dr DJ Gadhia's book "SAI SMARAN" (Published 2004) Pages 7 - 8 Baba says: Children, right now is the golden time for you. Open your hearts and recite this mantra and you will be successful in life. If you chant the Gayatri mantra and also respect your parents as God, then the effects of both these will work together, fuse into one and produce a great effect in your lives by giving you splendor and brilliance. The Gayatri mantra can be said always (at any time) and everywhere ( in any place ). I would advise you young people to recite it when you take your bath. Do not sing cheap and defiling songs. The Gayatri Mantra will protect you from harm wherever you are---in a bus,railway train or plane, in the bazaar or on the road. Never give up the Gayatri Mantra. I read that the Gayatri's purpose is to bestow self-realization and knowlege on the one who chants it constantly.
