Debate on human values

THE Sathya Sai Baba Centres of Perak recently organised the annual Sathya Sai

Human Values Debate to promote human values among youths. The debate, open to

all universities, colleges and sixth form students in Perak, was conducted in

English and carried the Austral-Asian format. All the debate participants,

including the teacher advisors, had to do community service. This year, the

participants and teacher advisors did the community service project at the Batu

Gajah Handicapped Children's home.

chairperson P. Priyashini.Some of the activities at the home were the painting

of pillars, cleaning of the home and feeding the children. This service

activity was carried out to expose the participants to the importance of

service to the less fortunate. The preliminary rounds were held at the Olympia

College in Ipoh. The topic debated was Parents are solely responsible for the

increasing indiscipline in schools. The semi-finals were also held at the

Olympia College. The topic debated was Giving free needles and condoms to drug

addicts will be beneficial to society. Cameron Highlands MP S. K. Devamany

attended the grand finals held at the Ipoh Hospital. There was an intense

debate between SMK St Michael and SMK Methodist (ACS) on the topic Fulfillment

of desires leads to real happiness. The opposing team SMK Methodist (ACS)

Ipoh was declared champions by a panel of five judges comprising professionals.

They walked away with RM600 and a challenge shield while the first runner-up

SMK St Michael Ipoh took home RM300. SMK Sultan Yusof Batu Gajah won the

third placing and took home RM150. SMK St Michael was represented by Jasmine

Chandramathi, Gary Chong Khin Jin, Teh Chih Wen and Yvonne Lee Ling Xin. SMK

Methodist Ipoh was represented by S. Gaurishankar, Goh Cheng Heng. Anita

Natalia and P. Avinesh Kumar. The best speaker was SMK St Michael’s Gary Chong

Khin Jin.
