While the media has been focussing on a few areas, there are many more areas which have been heavily impacted by the surging waters. One such affected area is Panvel (40 kms.from Mumbai). A team of SSSO visited Panvel this morning. We saw thousands of houses and shops laid waste by muddy waters. After 3-4 days of starvation, thirst and great personal inconvenience, residents were seen picking up the lost threads. Rotten grains, fruits and vegetables, soiled clothes and other perishables lay in heaps at every street corner. The putrid smell was nauseating. The swirling waters had taken away many household goods, including buckets, clothes and durables. At the peak of the disaster, water levels were about 9-10 feet resulting in extensive damage to goods stored in ground floor shops and apartments.Electricity is being restored in phases. About 5-6 JCB bull dozers/excavators are busy clearing the slush and the large mounds of garbage. It would take 3-4 days of clear skies for some semblance of normalcy to return. By the grace of Bhagwan Baba,Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Navi Mumbai has decided to extend whatever assistance is possible to the affected people. After consultation with the local people and a quick internal discussion it has been decided to conduct a Seva Camp on Sunday ,31st July 2005 at New Panvel (East). It is proposed to 1) Distribute clothes ( good wearable old clothes/ new clothes) 2) Blankets ( Old & new) / Plastic Mattresses (Chatai) 3) Medical Camp ( Team led by Dr Asha Damodaran) 4) Distribution of food and water to the needy. Whosoever is desirous of partcipating in this Seva, should reach Sai Prem , Sector 10-A, Vashi, Navi Mumbai on Sunday, 31st July between 7a.m. and 8 a.m. Those who wish to donate clothes or mattresses should contact the nearest Samithi Convenor/ Zonal Convenor or personally hand it over at Sai Prem before 8 a.m.on 31st July at Sai Prem Vashi.
