Guest guest
POSITIVE THINKING - SOME PRACTICAL STEPS Are we aware that 'failure' comes from resistance? It is not by will power alone that we can succeed. It is not by applying certain skills or knowledge that we will achieve lasting success. It is not luck or fortune. It is not hard work. It is not the time, place, or circumstance into which we were born that leads to success or failure.Success is created by harmony. It is through an understanding and acceptance of who we are and what we may choose to do that brings success in each and every aspect of life. Understanding the nature of consciousness will connect us with our power to 'create'.If we examine each circumstance and condition in our life, we will see clearly that the outer image of our reality is simply a reflection of the inner workings of our consciousness. The world without is a reflection of the world within. As within, so without. To change this world without that we have as our own, we simply need to change our world within.Every day, we think about 50,000 thoughts. 50,000 times a day we think something and our thoughts weave the cloth of our world.Examine those thoughts. Are they constructive to what we want? If we decide to change our mind then we can also change our reality. Change our thoughts, and wecan change the image we are. Choose bigger. Choose better. Choose more.1. Most negative thoughts are based on a misinterpretation of the situation. If we feel negative, look around the situation. Are the facts on which we base our pessimism correct? Are we really judging other people accurately? Are we imagining the worst, with no actual reason for doing so? Try to shift your attitude to a more positive one. 2. Keep a daily thought diary. In it, note down key thoughts, with the circumstances that created them. For example, if we felt irritated at work, think about why and make a note of it. Think about our emotional reaction. It should help us learn which situations provoke a negative or positive reaction. Regularly re-read our diary to trace our thought patterns and gauge whether we are becoming more positive. 3. Alter our mental images. By exploring and developing our mental representations we can feel much better about ourselves and life. For example, if we are feeling resentful towards our partner, imagine him as a small child who needs a hug. If we feel threatened by a colleague, imagine her in a silly hat. If the weather's awful, imagine a sunny day. 4. One way to achieve long-term positivity is to ask why we are thinking negatively. Are we frightened of what might happen in life - scared of being cut dead by friends, losing your job, splitting up with our partner? The answer is to face the fear, imagining what we would do and how we would cope if these things happened. Once we have faced up to our worst fear, it will automatically feel less scared and be more able to cope. 5. Using constructive language can turn our negative thoughts around. Be aware of our words. Instead of thinking 'I can't', tell ourselves how we can. Instead of saying, 'I regret' say, 'next time I will'. Instead of 'this is awful' let us tell ourselves what opportunities there are in the situation. 6. Learn to handle strong negative emotions. If we feel bad, do not bottle it up or push it down. Instead, work off the bad feeling with physical exercise or meditation or Namasmarana. Try to become aalmer by relaxing and focusing on calming thoughts. Talk through our feelings with a friend or even a professional counsellor. 7. Optimists take credit for the good things that happen, while putting the bad things down to coincidence, circumstance or mistake. Although we need to take responsibility for what goes on in our life - if something goes wrong, do not automatically take all the blame. Focus on our successes and recognise our contribution to things that turn out well. 8. We will not feel positive if we spend most of our time doing things you hate. If we are in the wrong job, change it. If we are in the wrong relationship, move on. Make time each day to do activities we enjoy and to indulge ourselves. 9. Don't let a tiny problem escalate into disaster. Immediately stop the downward spiral by injecting some positivity into the situation. Do something small that we know will succeed - such as a small specific task that we've done many times that we know we are not going to fail at - this can be anything from making a cup of tea, writing an email or even tidying a file. Let this sense of achievement boost us to take another, bigger step to success. 10. Research suggests that the more meaning we see in life, the easier we will find it to be positive. This means having a sense that there is a plan, a point, a purpose to life. Spend time thinking about why we are here in this world, think of our beloved Swami & His Message - and then let that sense of purpose guide you. Lastly....we must never forget...........that.......
