"Om Sri Sai Ram"

UWSBG HomeABOUT THE UW SAI BABA GROUP The UW Sai Baba Group was founded in

September 1999 at the University of Waterloo (UW) in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

The group is an “unofficial” affiliate of the international Sri Sathya Sai Seva

Organization. The UW Sai Baba Group is a collection of students who have come

together to pursue and practice the teachings of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. We are a

multi-faith, spiritual group that strives to encourage spirituality, morality

and selfless service in individuals. We welcome people from all faiths and

cultures to participate in our activities. Activities of the group include,

weekly bhajans (devotional singing), seva activities (service) and educational

study circles.

Bhajans Bhajans are devotional songs sung about the divine. The group conducts

bhajans once a week on the university campus in the Prayer Room (located in the

Student Life Center building). All bhajans and prayers have been typed out in

English so devotees can easily follow along and participate. Anyone may attend

the bhajans and sing any devotional song of their choice. Those who know how to

play musical instruments will be given the opportunity to do so. To strive for a

blissful bhajan session, we suggest the following guidelines :

Males and females sit on separate sides of the room The singer's voice should

not be drowned out by any of the instruments Bhajans are sung at regular speed,

then repeated at a faster speed the second time (accompanied by clapping) Sing

familiar bhajans, so that all can follow and share the “ananda” (bliss) Arrive

early and avoid disturbing other devotees by coming late Please dress

“respectably” when attending bhajans

Seva Activities A famous quote summarizes the importance of seva (service) -

"Hands That Serve Are Holier Than Lips That Pray." Throughout the history of

the group, members have participated in various volunteer activities including,

painting hospital rooms, helping in bake sales and fundraising for charity.

Students have also volunteered to help tutor each other in academic, career and

resume-related topics. Every semester, the group organizes an on-campus

“Sandwich Day.” This is when group members (and non-group members) prepare

vegetarian sandwiches/food items for homeless shelters around the

Kitchener-Waterloo area. New seva activities are always welcome. Please contact

the group to share your seva ideas. Educational Study Circles Occasionally the

group will organize on-campus study circles and discuss certain topics as per

Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s teachings. The objective of the study circle is to

stimulate one's thinking and to introduce people to spiritual concepts. The

study circle should educate all those present and collectively raise knowledge

and character. To lead a study circle or suggest a topic of discussion, please

contact the group.
