Guest guest
Sai Ram, dear Vishal. The book you are referring to, the "Sri Sai Satcharita", is in my opinion a miraculous book. It is perhaps my most precious, cherished possession in this world, because it was materialized for me by my Beloved Guru and God, Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The reason some of the information regarding Sai Baba of Shirdi's birth and first years of life given in the Satcharita seems to conflict with other accounts is because, during His life, Shirdi Baba himself tried to withdraw attention from these issues so that His devotees would focus instead on His teachings and guidance. He also did not want to fuel any kind of rivalry between his Hindu and Moslem devotees. He was the Divine Sadguru of all, irrespective of their religions. Sai Baba of Shirdi was a Divine Incarnation and therefore looked only at people's hearts, not their religious affiliations, nationality, social position, etc. He, as a legitimate Divine Incarnation would, stressed Unity and Love among all, and specially among his devotees. He even accepted sleeping one night in the Masjid, or dilapidated, abandoned Mosque that was his first home at Shirdi, and the next at the Chavadi or little Hindu temple his Hindu devotees built for him. Every other night the devotees, dressed in their best outfits, would take him to the Chavadi in a regal procession, singing bhjans and playing musical instruments. He accepted all of this so that none would feel that he preferred Muslims to Hindus or Hindus to Moslems. He did it so that they would go past these considerations and concentrate instead on the important matter at hand: their spiritual development and growth through the sadhana he prescribed for each of them. It is my feeling that you, following this thread, should leave aside your worries about the stories that tell of Sai Baba of Shirdi's birth and first years of life and read the book in its entirety. I am sure that, before you finish reading it, light will be shed on theses issues. Also, you might want to consider the fact the the Sri Sai Satcharita was written by a devotee of Shirdi Sai Baba at His behest, while He was still alive, and this devotee, whom Shirdi Baba knicknamed Hemadpant, went by whatever information he received from his Guru and by his day to day observations and experiences during the years he spent at Shirdi Baba's Lotus Feet. Later on, due to Shirdi Baba's ever increasing popularity, more scholarly, research-oriented accounts of His life have offered other versions of his birth and childhood. But the Satcharita is not a scholarly work. It is a modern day Upanishad. It is a work of Divine Love. It was actually written by Shirdi Baba through his devotee Hemadpant, whom He Himself chose for this task. His birth and childhood years are important because everything is important about Him, but much more important is His life in Shirdi where he became the Guru and God of these very fortunate, beautiful people whose spiritual deservedness earned them such great blessing. Do not allow this concern for Sai Baba of Shirdi's origins to deviate you from reading this book. It is fine for you to seek information, but this should not halt your reading or damp your enthusiasm. I can assure you that you will never regret having put aside this concern in favor of the totally holy and uplifting experience the book will give you, as well as the blessings the Sri Sai Satcharita confers on all who are fortunate enough and blessed enough to experience its bliss.
