SOUTHERN NEWS - ANDHRA PRADESH, Saturday June 18 2005 12:50 IST

KOVVUR: Come November, the drinking water woes of over 4.69 lakh people,

majority of them tribals, in 204 villages of 15 mandals of West Godavari

district would be a thing of the past. The much-awaited Satya Sai Sujala

Sravanthi drinking water scheme is all set to get going on November 23. The

Rs 50-crore scheme, for which the then district collector Sanjay Jaju performed

Bhoomi Pooja on February 11 this year, has been making steady progress. The

scheme envisages drawal of water from river Godavari at Adda Road Junction, 2

km downstream of Polavaram from an 11-metre intake well and stored in a 50-lakh

litre capacity reservoir, located at a distance of 33 km. The water would be

supplied through two 700 mm radius pipelines to the reservoir, which will have

a filter bed and a clarifier with a capacity of 20 lakh litres. The filtered

water would be stored at a 12-lakh litre capacity balancing reservoir located

at a height of 124 m. The safe drinking water would be supplied to villages

through two main pipelines - between Hukumpet and Dubacharla via Gopalapuram

and Hukumpet to Chintalapudi via Jangareddygudem and Kamavarapukota. To

augment the drinking water supply, additional balancing reservoirs would be set

up at Kovvada, Gopalapuram and Pragadavaram. According to Technical Advisor

to the State Government and Satya Sai Trust R Kondala Rao, the works on the

intake well would be completed by July 15. Meanwhile, 10 teams of Satya Sai

volunteers are conducting an awareness campaign in the 204 villages, which

would be benefited by the scheme from May 1. The campaign is aimed at

sensitising the people on the need for water conservation and watershed

management.
