The Stealth Neuro Navigation System

Image Guided Surgery arrives in India

Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Bangalore, is the second in

the world and the first in India to have acquired the Stealth Neuro Navigation

System (for image guided surgeries), the latest technology in precision neuro

surgery.

The Super Speciality Hospital, set up by Sri Sathya Sai Baba, treats patients on

absolutely free of cost basis and offers the state-of-the-art medical facilities

to all irrespective of the social or financial status.

The Stealth Neuro Navigation System borrows its concept from the Global

Positioning System technology that maps geographic dimensions using satellites.

In this procedure, the data from the CT scan and MRI of the patient is fed into

a computer in the Stealth system.

In the operation theatre, after the patient’s head is clamped for surgery, an

arc is fixed to the head. The arc contains marker, called fiducials. Two

cameras focussed on the operating area recognised these markers and map the

area. The computer reconstructs the image of the tumor or abnormality. The

surgeon will then know exactly where the tumour is and can plan the surgery

accurately. The incision will be just as big as required.

After the skull is opened, the position of the tumour is pinpointed again before

the cover of the brain is opened. In cases where the tumour is not on the

surface, the Stealth Navigation System can be used to determine its exact

location to map the shortest and safest route to reach it. This makes the

surgery safe, specially in cases, where tumour is close to the speech or other

critical areas of the brain.

Dr. A. S. Hegde, who heads the Neuro Surgery Department at the Super Speciality

Hospital, feel this system helps in faster cures. “The procedure will be less

invasive and the skull won’t be cut beyond what is required,” he says. The

system also contributes in terms of quicker procedures that go easy on

patients.

A team of surgeons from abroad recently came here to demonstrate the use of this

system to the surgeons of the Super Speciality Hospital to get them used to it.

Surgeons from all over the country participated in

this workshop, which was held at the hospital. The technology is just above a

year old and the system has been imported from the United States.

“We have acquired this surgical navigation technology in keeping with the

philosophy of Sri Sathya Sai Baba that the best medicare should be made

available to all irrespective of caste, creed or religion and at free of cost,”

said Dr. A. N. Safaya, director of the hospital. “This will encourage other

medical centers to adopt this technology and contribute to its spread in the

country.”

Regards,

Subhashbhai
