Guest guest
"" <rjmisra1 Thu Apr 7, 2005 4:55pm RE: [saibabanews] Guide me Sairam, I have found that the book " Dhyana Vahini " By Bhagwan satya Sai Baba has helped me a lot. Do not get worried because in the begining, distractions are normal. What you have to do is, as soon as your mind goes astray, try bringing it back to the form of God that you contemplate.Have patience and keep on trying. Good luck to you. Jai Sairam Raynu ---------- Jatindar Shad <egreatindia Thu Apr 7, 2005 10:12pm Re: [saibabanews] Guide me Sai Ram Savithri, What disturbs you - if it is sound - plug cotton in your ear - if it is vision - have no other light in the room except the jyothi for meditation - if you are physically uncomfortable - make yourself comfortable - a comfortable atmosphere is important - seating - if sitting in lotus position is troubling you - then practise sitting in lotus position even when you are not doing meditation. See - you have to find out what is causing your disturbance. For more on this read the Dhayan Vahini by Baba. It is only when you have over come the physical disturbance, that you will be able to control the disturbance of the mind - and have a vision of the divine with your inner eye. Sai Ram - Be Happy JP (The SAI AT project, to comemmorate Bhagwans 80th Year of Advent, has been launched - for details - log on to http://www.sailopics.com) ---------- Sai Sandesh <saisandesh Fri Apr 8, 2005 2:33am Re: [saibabanews] Guide me Dhyana vaahini is the authentical source on meditation techniques from GOD Himself, our Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. Available on internet at: http://www.vahini.org/downloads/dhyanavahini.html Entire book is available on one single page here. You can simply print it out and make a nice handbook for reading. The book published by SSSPBT is also very nice. Swami explains various methods of meditation. The main thing He stresses is not to expect anything out of Dhyanam. The meditation which expects nothing as a result is called "Sathwic Dhyana" and this is the best method of all. And Swami says, concentration and "thoughtlessness" comes through practise. Coming to the wandering mind, Swami asks us not to use force to prevent the mind going after worldly thoughts. Instead, leave it away, let it wander, and do not "care" about it all. Dont worry about it...dont give it attention....When it sees that you are no more caring for it, it would silently come back to you. Swami gives the example of a naughty child who does a lot of noise to enrage his mother. As long as the mother gives attention to the child, the child's pranks will go on increasing. Once the mother stops paying attention to the child, he would slowly come back to the mother silently...:-) I can share with you my personal experience. I do not do meditation but I sit and do Namasmarana. I do it for 10 minutes everday. I keep an alarm so as to avoid being conscious about time. On the first day, it was great. Second day...a bit less, third day still lesser. And particularly on some days when my mood was not good, I used to get disturbed completely. BUT.....quite unknowingly, my power to concentrate is increasing. Gradually I got used to breathing and chanting the Name repeatedly for 10 minutes without any stop or break. My physical position has become comfortable and I got "used" to it. Now, there is no physical discomfiture. The body got used to sit and chant the Name.....Also, the mental discomfiture has reduced a lot because I know where exactly my mind would go on wandering and where I need to stop caring about it and thus get it back to Swami. Now, I enjoy 7-8 minutes out of 10 thoroughly with good concentration. Still 2 minutes left to conquer :-)...I am also thinking of increasing my Dhyana time to 15 minutes (the alarm I mean...If I donot use an alarm, I would be thinking every minute..."Oh may be the ten minutes are over"....haha.....Once you keep the alarm, you are free from time constraints....). Sister, what I can say is .... these techniques of conquering mind cannot be read or taught. Of course, the books and experiences of people do help in giving some pointers, but to master the mind, the only secret is "Sadhana"...continuous unabated practise. As you practise more and more, Swami will be happy with you steadfastness and He would bless you with His Grace. And that Grace will make EVERYTHING possible! One can feel for himself/herself the growing peace in mind and confidence as Dhayana proceeds day-by-day. Another important thing Swami mentions in Dhyana vaahini is to do Dhyana with enthusiasm and firm conviction in victory...I mean with complete conidence that we would be able to conquer the mind....NOT to get discouraged if we were not able to do it properly on one day or the other... Just do not care about the disturbances....go on doing it....go on with the Name and Form of Swami....May be, you can try Namasmarana (chanting the Name aloud rather than internal Namasmarana or thoughtless Dhyana)...because chanting the Name aloud will keep useless thoughts away. The sound produced by the Name will keep our mind concentrated on Lord...It is much easier to concentrate by chanting the Name than silent meditation.... I chant "Om Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Ramaya Namaha..." Go ahead, sister, with faith in our GOD, the MASTER! Swami is your PERSONAL Guru. He would teach you all the techniques and help and guide you....Within a month, or even much before that...Swami will grace you with bliss...It is a fact beyond doubt! All the very best! Swami is with you, in you. JAI SAIRAM Pardha ---------- mrao Cc: tmsrao05 Fri Apr 8, 2005 5:14am Re: [saibabanews] Guide me Sairam Sister Akila, Jyoti Meditation - A Quote from Sathya Sai Baba "As regards the technique of meditation, different teachers and trainers give different forms of advice. But I shall give you now the most universal and the most effective form. This is the very first step in spiritual discipline. At first, set a few minutes every day for meditation, and extend the time as you feel the bliss that you get. "Let it be in the hours before dawn. This is preferable because the body is refreshed after sleep, and the dealings of daytime will not yet have impinged on you. Have a lamp or a candle before you with an open, steady, and straight flame. Sit in front of the candle in the lotus posture or any other comfortable sitting position. Look on the flame steadily for some time, and closing your eyes try to feel the flame inside you between your eyebrows. Let it slide down into the lotus of your heart, illuminating the path. When it enters the heart, imagine that the petals of the lotus open out by one, bathing every thought, feeling, and emotion in the light and so removing darkness from them. There is no space for darkness to hide. The light of the flame becomes wider and brighter. Let it pervade your limbs. Now those limbs can never indulge in dark, suspicious, and wicked activities; they have become instruments of light and love. As the light reaches up to the tongue, falsehood vanishes from it. Let it rise up to the eyes and the ears and destroy all the dark desires that infest them and which lead you to perverse sights and childish conversation. Let your head be surcharged with light and all wicked thoughts will flee therefrom. Imagine that the light is in you more and more intensely. Let it shine all around you and let it spread from you in ever widening circles, taking in your loved ones, your kith and kin, your friends and companions, your enemies and rivals, strangers, all living beings, the entire world. "Since the light illumines all the senses every day so deeply and so systematically, a time will soon come when you can no more relish dark and evil sights, yearn for dark and sinister tales, crave for base, harmful, deadening toxic food and drink, handle dirty demeaning things, approach places of ill-fame and injury, or frame evil designs against anyone at any time. Stay on in that thrill of witnessing the light everywhere. If you are adoring God in any form now, try to visualize that form in the all-pervasive light. For Light is God; God is Light. "Practice this meditation as I have advised regularly every day. At other times repeat the name of God (any Name fragrant with any of His many Majesties), always taking care to be conscious of His might, mercy, and munificence." Sathya Sai Speaks, volume ten, last few pages in that chapter. (American Version is pages 348-350) Swami said that doubts are passing clouds and often come when we have difficulties. Difficulties are good for us. Troubles are for our own good. Donít get worried or bothered by these difficulties. At times, there is depression from disappointment. Think of difficulties as a gift from God and you will not have depression. "A bar of iron sinks in water; but beat it into a hollow vessel and it will float merrily and even carry some weight. So too, man's mind sinks easily in the sea of senses; beat it hollow, hammering it with the Name of the Lord. It will float, safely, on a sea of troubles. Do not be like gramophone records singing someone else's song, ignorant of the genuine thrill of music. Sing from your own experience the Glory and Grace of the Lord." --BABA --- Kind Regards, T.M.S. Guest guest
Sai Ram There is a simple technique I use that work most of the times. Imagine that the object of your distraction is a cloud or a group of clouds in the sky. Look at them and observe how they come and they disappear, until that imaginary sky in your mind is totally clear. If some other thought or noise comes back to distract you again, apply the same visualization - It is just an act of accepting the thought, paying it the required attention to finally let it go. If you try to fight against the object and put some resistance to its appearance, you may end up putting all your attention on the source of distraction rather than in your meditation.
