Water from Telugu Ganga is flowing towards Chennai. Compared to last year when only two tmcft was released this year the full five tmcft share of Tamil Nadu is expected to be supplied in about three weeks. Telugu Ganga chief engineer Vijayakumar Reddy and TN Metro Water Works Chief Engineer Muralikrishna lifted the gates at Kandaleru head regulator at about 10.30 am on Wednesday, marking the formal release of the Krishna water into a canal -Sai Ganga - which connects Poondi reservoir. It will take at least 10 days to reach Chennai. According to sources, 200 cusecs of water was being let into the Sai Ganga canal. The flow is likely to increase to 800 cusecs tomorrow and it will be continued for the next 20 to 25 days. For the first time in 54 years, all the three reservoirs feeding Chennai went dry causing untold hardship to the residents of the metropolis. In the wake of the crisis TN Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa held discussions with her AP counterpart YS Rajasekhara Reddy in Hyderabad on October 1 and the latter had agreed to supply five- tmcft water. Subsequently, Chief Secretaries of AP and TN met in Tirupati on Oct 18. It was decided that water should be released by Nov 17 or 18 as by then there would be at least 6.9-tmcft water. But actual release was delayed by five days.
