On the fourth day on Saturday, Priya Sisters Shanmukhapriya and Haripriya of Chennai presented a vocal concert. The sisters, who have established themselves as a popular singing duo, enthralled Satya Sai devotees and music lovers with their finely blended voices, singing in tandem. Starting with Varavallabha Naayaka, they followed it up with the Thyagaraja krithi Evarani Nirnayinchira in Devamrithavarshini, in which they reached the climax in the spot. The sisters created a devotional atmosphere all through their recital, sharing the applause equally. Their Devadideva in Sunada Vinodini was another sweet number. The main attraction was Abheri with Thyagaraja’s ever-popular Nagumomu Ganaleni, which they embellished with a pleasing neraval and swaras. Finally, they sang Satya Sai bhajans, receiving good response from the audience. MA Krishnaswamy on the violin gave good support. Satish Kumar on the mridangam and Mudipakkam Murali on the ghatam played with a good understanding in accompanying and also their percussion solo was enlivening. RONU MAJUMDAR’S BANSURI: Pandit Ronu Majumdar presented a bansuri (long flute) recital in Hindustani style at Sivam on Sunday. Ronu Majumdar hails from Kolkata, the home of late Pannalal Ghosh, the originator of the present daylong flute styles. Ronu started with raag Jhanjhoot. The Hindustani style is noted for keeping the sur at a higher volume with two tanpuras on each side, but on this occasion, there were no tanpuras at all and the sur probably played on the electronic tanpura was hardly audible. Consequently, Ronu’s delineation of the raag lacked impact. He then played Jod for which Pandit Durga Prasad accompanied on the Pakhawaj. The Jhala and later a composition in Jhap Taal were played, as both the Pakhawaj and tabala took turns in accompaniment. The concluding part in the fast tempo provided a few thrills for the audience. Ronu continued with a Teen Taal bhajan in Hamsadhwani and continued with Desh and a string of other ragas Jayjaywanti, etc. He concluded with another bhajan, Ram Ratan Dhan Payo and later Vaishnava Janato in Mishra Khamach. ANNAMACHARYA KIRTANS: On the third day, Kondaveeti Jyothirmayi Chaudary rendered a number of Annamacharya kirtans. She has been training in the Annamacharya Project of TTD. She impressed with songs like Jagadapu Chanavula in Hindola Vasantam, Kanti Nakhilandatatikarta (Madhyamavathi), Adivo Alladivo, Hari Antaranga etc. She had good support from Casio player Rajamohan, tablists Panduranga Rao and Devasarma, rhythms expert Ramdas and Sruti Himabindu. MELODIOUS VOCAL: Gayatri Venkataraghavan of Chennai sang devotional Carnatic music on the second day with a melodious voice. She began with a Dakshinamurthy sloka and continued with Vatapi in Hamsadhwani showing a good fluency in swara improvisation. Her Tulasidalamulache of Thyagaraja was full of devotional fervour. Guruleka in Gowrimanohari was an appropriate choice. A Sai bhajan attracted instant applause. Ennaganu Ramabhajana in Pantuvarali was sweet and embellished with a good neraval and swaras. A Kannada Devaranama in Regupti, Thyagaraja’s Manaviyalakimpa in Nalinakanti sung in the fast tempo and an Annamayya kirtan Parama Purusha were pleasing. The main attraction, a delineation of melodious Shanmukhapriya with the Annamayya kirtan was well received. She concluded with a delightful Meera bhajan.
