Perhaps few would refuse to look at this most-photographed face again and again. And for Mangaloreans, she means much more than beauty for she is their pride. Krishna Raj Rai and Vrinda Rai were blessed with the hazel-eyed beauty on November 1, 1973, in Mangalore. She was named Aishwarya (wealth) as Satya Sai Baba blessed the child and said that the name "Aishwarya'' should mean "treasure of love and affection", not "wealth". Apple of everyone's eye, Ash - the youngest child in the family - was nicknamed "Gulu" by the family members. The pretty child attracted a lot of attention wherever she went. Be it her family, friends circle or her school. She did the same at the Miss World beauty pageant as well. "She was extremely good at her studies. Her parents saw to it that she got the best when it came to studies," says her cousin in the city, not willing to be quoted. "Gulu is very determined and she will never do anything haphazardly. She was good at dancing and drawing too. She could draw beautiful mehendi. During one of the family weddings, she was dead-tired but still drew mehendi on so many people's hands," she adds. This relative of Ash feels that Ash had always been a very warm, loving person. But after she won the pageant, she became more affectionate. She is very choosy about her friends but she is one person who would do anything to keep up the friendship. "She is like any girl next door. She knows cooking, sings bhajans and is an ardent devotee of Shree Satya Sai Baba. She is very homely," says the proud cousin. There's no denying that Ash has reached the pinnacle of glory. She is one of the very few who made it big in Bollywood and has crossed over to Hollywood. However, her venture had driven her relatives a little nervous. "We were very skeptical about Gulu getting into Bollywood. We felt she should be just happy with the crown. But we are very sure that no matter where she goes, she will remain decent as ever," her relative adds.Tired of spam?
