Guest guest
.... A strong believer of Sai Baba, she says, “It’s the devotion towards him that has given me this wonderful opportunity of serving the needy.”... Following her heart... Parwinder BlagganJalandhar, October 25 IT was a matter of choice: Devi Mahendru (58) was working as a manager of a reputed firm in Delhi and earning a good salary. Then she chucked it all to be with the orphans of the Pushpa Gujral Nari Niketan in Jalandhar city. Wife of director of the Niketan, Col R.C. Mahendru (retd), Devi says she was more excited than her husband when he was appointed to this post. “It was the idea of doing something worthwhile — doing something concrete for people who need help.” She’s been here for sometime now. So ingrained is she in the set-up that she’s fondly called Mama by children of the Niketan. “It’s a place where I’ve finally found solace,” Devi does not mince words while expressing her sentiments. A strong believer of Sai Baba, she says, “It’s the devotion towards him that has given me this wonderful opportunity of serving the needy.” This is not Devi’s first shot at social service. With her husband in the Army, she travelled to various places and subsequently, was part of the Army Wives’ Welfare Association (AWWA) activities. “I put a lot of stress on family planning.” A postgraduate in M.Sc, Devi’s two daughters are now married. “When my daughters came to meet me at the Niketan, their immediate reaction was that they’d lost me to the kids here — but on the whole, they were happy that I found my calling here,” explains Devi. Her daily routine is packed. Besides meals with the children, she spends a lot of time with them, asking them about their problems, playing with them and helping them with their homework. “Yes, they like to share their secrets with me. And even want me to know each and every thing that’s happened over the day. I share a very special relationship with them.” Mother of a huge family now, Devi has her hands more than full. “Especially with the daughters — I am helping them learn to cook and in fact, on Sundays, they prepare meals for everyone. Besides, I’ve also made it a point to look into each kid’s area of interest in studies so that later on, they can pursue the same for higher education.” © HT Media Ltd. 2004.
