Howard Murphet, renowned Australian Sai Devotee and author of six book on

Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, has left his mortal body on last

tuesday at the venerable age of ninety-eight. I humbly request all the community

of devotees to please pray for this great devotee. Om Sai Ram

Howard Murphet with Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Howard left his body today (Tuesday 28 September 2004)at 4pm. His son was

staying at Howard's home and had just given him abath and was putting oil on

his body. Howard was breathing verypeacefully and simply took one last gentle

breath. He had been mainlysleeping deeply for the last few days. Howard was

just a couple ofmonths short of his 98th Birthday. His funeral will be held

next Tuesdayin the Blue Mountains about 1 hour drive west of Sydney.

Loka Samasta Sukhino BhavantuHoward once told me that his favourite poem was

Brahma, by Ralph Waldo EmersonIf the red slayer think he slays, Or if the slain

think he is slain, They know not well the subtle ways I keep, and pass, and turn

again. Far or forgot to me is near; Shadow and sunlight are the same; The

vanished gods to me appear; And one to me are shame and fame. They reckon ill

who leave me out; When me they fly, I am the wings; I am the doubter and the

doubt, And I the hymn the Brahmin sings. The strong gods pine for my abode, And

pine in vain the sacred Seven; But thou, meek lover of the good! Find me, and

turn thy back on heaven.

[sai centre of Gordon] Howard Murphet

Howard would be so happy now, as he has looked forward to this event for the

last couple of years. He dearly missed Iris and could contact her only

infrequently through a clairvoyant.

Howard was a couple of months short of his 98th birthday and left his body very peacefully.

It is hard to imagine that it was not until he was in his mid fifties that he

first met Sai Baba. On the first visit to Puttaparthi (Howard had seen Swami

previously in Madras) he was motivated to write a book. His beautiful flowing

literary style and incredible memory for events, which only left him in the

last few months, made the book one of the most important in Swami's mission -

"Man of Miracles". Many thousands of people first learnt of Sai Baba through

that amazing book of which tens of thousands of copies have been sold.

The experiences and closeness that Howard enjoyed when so few westerners

travelled to Puttaparthi or had even heard of Swami can only be wondered at

with awe by those who have followed him.

Howard went on to write several more books, the latest being published early in

2004, fulfilling an instruction that Siva had given to Howard a few years

before.

Howard's life is one that can truly be celebrated as an instrument of the

Divine. I think his only regret in passing was that Swami told him he had to

return one more time, whereas Iris has merged with Swami. The compensation is

that Swami assured him that he would assist in the mission of Prema Sai.

Howard would want his crossing of the River Jordan, as he referred to it, to be

a real celebration and an occasion that would inspire all of us to become

better devotees and to move closer to realise the Divinity within.

Would you please let the Gordon people know, and of course any others in the

Organisation, that Howard has left us and gone on to join his beloved Iris who

is with Swami.

His funeral will be next Tuesday but no other details yet available.

Thanks, Sona

Dear Sai Community,

Howard Murphett's son Richard has asked me to inform you all that Howard is not

expected to live for more than a day or two at the most. Howard has stopped

eating and drinking, but I saw him today and he is quite peaceful. Outwardly

he shows no sign of awareness. Arrangements will be made to farewell Howard

and to celebrate his life within a few days after he finally leaves his body.

This will be in the Blue Mountains, and details will be given as soon as they

are known. Howard is being cared for at his home in Valley Road, so if any of

you wish to visit at this time, Richard says you are most welcome to say

farewell, but please ring before you go to make a time.

Please pray for Howard as he completes this life's journey, and let us all

remember the wonderful work he has done in helping to bring Sai's message to

the world.
