Guest guest
Sai Ram! In response to your request, the following quotations are taken from the book, A Compendium of the Teachings of Sathya Sai Baba: "For 26 years Buddha sought the realization of the Self by studying scriptures, meeting sages and saints and listening to their teachings. He found that by these means he could not experience reality. He realized that the knowledge of the Self has to be gained through an inward search. He stopped the outward quest and gradually experienced knowledge of the Self from within.....Through his enlightenment, he discovered the importance of Dharma and wanted to make it the basis of society." SS June 1998 P 149 "Buddha undertook various enquiries to discover the Divine and came to the conclusion that it is only through mastery over his senses he can achieve this. Man has to make the right use of his senses for sacred purposes to realize his divinity." SS Feb 1998 P 29 "Buddha before attaining nirvana, liberation, taught well. His brother Ananda was shedding tears. He told Ananda,`Don’t cry like this. Why do you shed tears?’ Ananda said, ‘Since you are dying, I am crying.’ Buddha said, ‘I am not dying, nor are you going to live! All of us will leave this body at one time or other. So, don’t shed tears.’ "Who is observing this sort of teaching today? We should strive to be a true ideal. This is the true symbol of the celebration behind the birthday. But all the ideals that are repeated and told are not being practiced." Christmas Discourse, 1997 "Buddha never mentioned God. The story is known that he was a prince with wife and child, that when he saw misery and death he determined to find their cause. For years he engaged in severe austerities. He made three announcements: All is suffering. All is transient. All is void." CWSSB P 106 "No one can live for himself. He is involved with parents, kinsmen, friends, foes, society, countrymen, etc., in ever widening circles. Buddhists declare, ‘I take refuge in the Buddha. I take refuge in the Sangha. I take refuge in Dharma’. The first is the involvement with the reality in one’s own individual self. One must examine oneself whether he lives according to a mind, free from polluting thoughts and feelings. Buddha is the symbol of the awakened intellect. Is the intellect sharp enough for clear discrimination? This must be one’s question to oneself. "The second stage is refuge in Sangha. Just as one yearns for and works towards securing property, welfare and happiness for oneself, one must also yearn for and work towards securing these very things for the sangha (society) to which one belongs. Without society to guard and guide, the individual is lost, as a drop of oil on an expanse of water. One’s welfare is based on the welfare of society. The welfare of a particular society is based on the welfare of the country. "The third stage: refuge in dharma. Dharma means the vesture of the cosmos, that which is its very nature, namely Prema or Divine Love. When one seeks refuge in Love that sustains and promotes progress, the individual, the society and world become a sublime Trinity." SSS VOL XI Chap 24 P 142 "You have seen hundreds of funerals; but, no lesson has been learned. Buddha saw but one. It changed the course of his life and opened a new chapter in the history of the world. You have seen long processions of Hindu monks; Buddha saw only one. You have seen sick men by hundreds. The renunciation of the Hindu monk, the suffering of the sick, the pitiable condition of the aged - these made a profound impression on Buddha. He left his palace, his wife and his new born child to seek remedy for the miseries of life." BTBOS P 128 "Siddhartha (meaning he who has attained his goal) was the founder of Buddhism. His family name was Gauthama. He was a prince, son of King Suddhodhana and Queen Maya of the Kingdom of the ‘Sakyas’ whose capital was Kapilavastu. He was born about 567 B.C.. He became ‘Buddha’ or the enlightened one, later in his life and formed the religion Buddhism..... "He taught the gospel of the four Aryan truths: (1) Life is full of suffering. Every event in life is painful (birth, age, disease, desire and so on). (2) It is desire that is the origin of suffering. It is the craving or thirst (Trishna) that binds us to the unending cycle of birth and death. (3) It is possible to achieve the suppression of suffering. He said by wisdom and understanding and through full awareness of the self, man can attain the state of bliss. For this he must awaken himself from the Anjana to Jnana. (4) The way to end suffering is to follow the noble eightfold path. In this all extremes are to be avoided and middle path has to be followed. He also said that by torture of the body ‘Nirvana’ or salvation cannot be achieved. He taught non-attachment. He said a wise man, who is a ‘Sama Darshi’, who looks upon everything in an objective unattached manner is a real ‘Bodhi’ or truly enlightened person. He said only a pure in heart shall attain Nirvana or liberation. The Buddha does not mention either God or the soul in his teachings. Instead he refers constantly to ‘Manas’ or mind, which prompts all actions and words..... "The whole of the simple doctrine of Buddha is best expressed in the Buddhist Pancha-shil. It consists of the following resolutions: (1) I will refrain from killing any creature. (2) I will refrain from false-hood. (3) I will refrain from stealing. (4) I will refrain from intoxicants....."
