The provision of such treatment has also become a commercial enterprise with all the attendant abuses. The guiding principle driving all the medical relief activities of the trust could be summed up as follows: · Globalization of Medicine: Medical aid should be the right of every individual irrespective of caste, creed, nationality or colour. · To free Medicine from the stigma of Commercialization: The act of healing should be restored to its pristine sanctity, which can only be done when it ceases to be a commodity bought and sold in the market. · Human Values in Medical Care: The human agents of the delivery system of health care, whether Health Administrators, Doctors, Nurses or Technicians, should be perfectly "human"; in thoughts, words and deeds. They should demonstrate the five Human Values. Truth, Righteousness, Peace, Love and Non-violence in every act of theirs. · Spiritual Well Being As A Medical Concept: Present day medicine stops at laying down health practices and policies to provide physical, mental and psychological health of the individual. It makes little or no attempt at strengthening the SPIRIT of man - the divine force in him that energises his physical, mental or psychological systems. Modern medicine has lost its inherent and intrinsic proximity to spirituality. Unless that element is restored, Medicine or healthcare could never be holistic. The health plan of the Sri Sathya Sai seva Organisation would have a three-tier basis. 1) DIAGNOSTICS AND PRIMARY HEALTH CARE: The basic purpose would be to prevent wherever possible, diagnose diseases and offer basic treatment on a mass basis. This is through the following media: a. Medical camps being conducted around the city of Mumbai through various Samithis. b. OPD dispensaries at three places in the city along with a few homeopathy dispensaries. c. Other peripheral units would be Blood Donation Camps and Adult Education camps. d. A Preventive Medical Care Programme along with First Aid training would be an addition at the Primary Level of the Medicare Initiative in Mumbai. e. Patients would be referred to the secondary level if necessary. 2) SECONDARY MEDICAL HEALTH care refers to the specific ailments, which need either periodic check-ups or a specialist treatment in disciplines like: Pediatrics, General or Orthopaedic Surgery, Ophthalmology etc. The Medicare facility at Dharmakshetra and partial facility at Sai Prem mainly cater to this level. In addition, specialty diagnostic medical camps like Osteoporosis, Cardiac, and ENT complement this activity. 3) Addressing the SUPER-SPECIALTY AILMENTS, which prove to be a burden physically and psychologically on the economically weaker sections of society. This activity would complete the tertiary link in the chain of Health Care. The word “Super Specialty” addresses both the complexity of the ailment including the end result if left un-treated as well as the exorbitant cost involved in the treatment. The Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation, Mumbai has bridged this gap in the city. Specialist Doctors in the city have been invited to join hands with the Organisation. The cost of the medicines and other pre/post operative requirements would be borne by the Sri Sathya Sai Trust if required. The inauguration of this Super Specialty Program is scheduled for 5th September At Dharmakshetra a 10.30 am. SRI SATHYA SAI MEDICARE PROGRAMME On Sunday, 5th September 2004.
