Guest guest
Namaste 22-07-2004 Report on Fort Samiti - Youth Wing visit to The Spastic Society, Colaba For the last several years, the Mahila Vibhag of Fort Samiti has been regularly visiting The Spastic Society, at Colaba. On 22nd July 2004 (Thursday), the Youth wing of Fort Samiti spent about two hours with the children at the Spastics Society and conducted an interactive session with them. A total of 7 Youths, 2 Mahilas and 2 gents attended this event. The program was conducted in the following manner: The children totaling to about 30 of them, were made to assemble in a hall and sit in an orderly manner. Then after recitation of three Omkars, the youth sang a few bhajans to attract the attention of the children. The children at first were distracted, but later they too joined in the singing and sang loudly. Thereafter a moral story on honesty was told to the children by one of the youths, which the children enjoyed thoroughly. The next item on the agenda was the most interesting one, for which the children had been waiting for a long time – this was a show on Swami's life. For this, a DVD player attached to a computer was arranged for, and a Video CD on Swami - Visions of the Divine was shown which included Swami's Darshan and Bhajans. The children were in awe to see Swami move and talk. They watched the film with rapt attention. This was probably their first moment in their lives to see Swami actually move and talk, since all along they had only seen Swami's photo. We could all see the happiness writ large on their small faces on seeing Swami move amongst the crowds and distribute sweets to the crowds. These innocent children were actually stretching out their little hands, expecting to receive the sweets that Swami was throwing towards the crowds, in the film. In the end, the children were distributed chocolates. The Principal and the teachers at the school were very happy and have urged us to have similar such events on a regular basis. The Youth will include this as one of their regular events in the Fort Samiti activity. On 25th July 2004 (Sunday), the Youth wing of Fort Samiti spent the evening from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, with the children at the Remand Home. A total of 6 Youths, 4 Mahilas and 4 gents, including the Samiti Convenor – Dr V. V. Nori, attended this event. The first half of the session was spent with the boys at the Remand home. There were about 400 boys, who were made to sit in queues in a long hall, which had a stage. The inmates first sang bhajans with us and clapped loudly with eyes closed, throughout the bhajans sessions. Thereafter, Video Bhajans of Bhagavan was shown to them. A huge 29" TV screen was arranged for relaying this film. The children were jubilant to see the huge TV set and clapped voraciously out of excitement. They saw Swami's film in utter silence. Thereafter they were made to queue up in order to receive the prasad of ladoos and bananas. We then proceeded to the Girls' cell, where there were about 150 inmates. We sang bhajans with them and again relayed Swami's film on the huge TV screen. Thereafter clothes were distributed to them, and finally the prasad of ladoos and bananas were distributed. It was a great experience for the youths to visit this place and they felt satisfied that they had a fruitful evening spent with these children. We then left this place with a heavy heart as the children there; both boys and girls were insisting that we stay much longer with them. We plan to conduct more such visits to this Remand home and to spend more time with the inmates by telling moral based stories etc and also to provide them with daily utility items like soaps, toothpastes etc. We also plan to conduct Narayan seva for the inmates there.
