Such services give meesage of our life.

Thanks

Dear all members of AABIDS,

Since three days, I have been watching a beggar, an

old woman in her 70s, lying right in front of our

house. Passers by have put bananas, food, coins, water

bottles she ate very little of them rest of them were

lying all around. Every time I come out of the house I

used to think that I should do something for her but I

used to postpone it because of the job on hand.

Whenever I was entering I used to think that I should

bring food and feed her.

Finally yesterday (28th August 2003) when I was

entering our house I have seen her half naked, she has

passed on stools and urinated there, flies were all

over her place. She was crying and giving a sort of

frail cry in order to attract the attention of the

passersby for assistance. The area was stinking. The

previous night it even rained and the stench was

unbearable!

I came upstairs and asked my sister-in-law to come

downstairs at once. Initially she has assumed that I

have met with an accident and our car got damaged

beyond repair. I have changed my clothes and wore work

pants and a T-shirt. She came down stairs and saw the

pathetic condition of that old woman.

I went to a barber and brought him on my two wheeler

thinking that first her unwashed and unkempt hair has

to be shaved off and later I thought I would clean her

on the road itself. I took her consent for all this. I

sat by her side, put my hand on her head and began

asking her what is her problem. That time she has said

that her left hand and left leg are not functioning

since 3 months. I asked her besides that whether she

has any more problems. She has said that to which ever

area she has gone the police have been beating her in

order to shoo her away with their sticks! She was

immobile.

All my people and neighbours have advised me that I

should not give her bath and I should not let the

barber shave off her hair. They all have said that I

will unnecessarily end up in legal problems. I had to

send away the barber. I have put aside the soap case

which I have brought in a great hurry. My

sister-in-law has given a washed cotton saree that she

wears everyday.

Went straight to our area Police Station. There I have

explained about the matter and asked them to shift her

to Government Hospital. They have asked me to give it

in writing. I gave it with all my address particulars

and phone numbers. The Inspector has said that,

"there is no vehicle at present you will have to

wait". I have said that I will take her in an auto and

bear the expenses. The Head Constable has prepared a

letter addressing the Duty Doctor, Osmania Government

Hospital to give necessary medical treatment to Smt.

Veeramma, resident of Dharmavaram, aged about 70

years.

Two constables have come with me in that auto and I

was on a two wheeler. Upon reaching the beggar's spot

so many onlookers have gathered. None was ready to

touch her. All her muddled clothes were wet with urine

and excreta. I have asked one of the policemen to help

me from one side and put her in the auto. We have

shifted her in a wheel chair and took her to OGH

casualty ward. There all young trainee (I am not sure)

doctors have checked her. They have asked me to take

her to General Ward.

I and one of the policemen have taken her to the Gen

Ward in wheel chair. None of the doctors or ward-boys

is ready to touch her. She was stinking and unclean.

Smt. Veeramma, name of the Beggar, probably stopped

taking bath since many months. Here comes the most

important thing, the doctors have asked her, "what is

your problem". Veeramma replied, "my left hand and leg

are not functioning since 3 months and police have

been beating me up quite often". They have checked for

the wounds on her back. They said, "the beating wounds

on her back have healed and she has suffered the

paralytic stroke 3 months back therefore, immediate,

medical attention is not required"!!!

I had to request the doctors to do something to that

poor woman who really requires some help. They have

said that they are ready to help me (not the woman),

if I can get her ECG done and if the results show

something wrong in her ECG they are ready to admit

her!

I took her to the ECG ward. While pushing the

wheelchair of Smt. Veeramma I have casually asked her

this question, "Veeramma if I give you some poison are

you ready to consume it"? Pat came the reply, "it

would be a great help, please give and I will take it

right now". I just wanted to test whether she has any

desire towards the life or not.

At the ECG ward they have asked me to lift her and

place her on the table. The policeman and I had to do

that job. Unfortunately Smt. Veeramma could not

stretch both of her legs because she has arthritis

also. The ECG people said, "ask the doctors to admit

her in the ward and we will come and conduct her ECG

on her bed itself". I took her back to the General

Ward. There the doctors said, "rules do not permit us

to admit her without any problem, she does not require

any immediate medical attention, please take her back

to the Casualty Ward". I have requested few of the

ward-boys and 'ayahs' (women) asking them to give Smt.

Veeramma bath and in return I will "tip" them heavily.

They have not come forward!!

I took her to Casualty. They have asked me to bring

her to the hospital next day morning for OPD! I have

served in Indian Central Government for 16 long years

and I am very much acquainted with the functioning of

our Government and system, therefore, I was not

shocked at all. I have received a phone call from my

sister-in-law on my mobile asking me to come for

lunch, as it was already 15:30 hrs. I told her, "until

I wrap up this issue today I am not going to come".

Luckily the same auto fellow was waiting for me out

side. So me and my small team (auto driver and two

constables) in one auto and on my two wheeler headed

for the "THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR" (home for

aged) a charitable institution to which my brother

annually donates some amount. There the sisters have

said that they will only admit those aged-people who

have some relatives. Fortunately the sister has

directed me to a Charitable Missionary Home run by

Mother Teresa institution which allows admission only

for DESTITUTES! I have requested the sister to phone

them up about our arrival with Smt. Veeramma.

This place is opposite to old Musheerabad Jail, New

Bhoiguda, Secunderabad. The sister was waiting for our

arrival. She has taken Smt. Veeramma with the help of

two boys who are ready to give her bath. The sister

has asked me to fill out a form wherein I will have to

state that I will not claim the dead body of Smt.

Veeramma in the case of any eventuality and the same

will be handed over to Municipal Corporation of

Hyderabad.

The sister has asked me, both the constables and the

auto driver to follow her. She has taken us on a tour

of that Home. There we have seen so many old people,

so many sick people, so many mad people, so many

handicapped people (their ages ranging from 10 to 90).

They all desperately try to get up or try to bring

their hands together to give us respect. None visits

them. They do not have any relatives or friends. None

like to befriend them because they are good for

nothing and their appearance is repelling. But their

desperateness to give respect to the visitors has made

me cry like anything. I came out began sobbing like

anything. The constable who is in his 50 also began

crying. The sister waited for some time and asked me

to follow her. I thought of telling her that I do not

want to take it anymore. On the second thoughts I said

to myself, "if I am an army man I must face the

reality and let me face it completely". Our tour

continued and I began putting my hand on their heads

and tried to hug them, some of them wept silently

(forgot to mention that most of the destitute are old

women).

I have asked the sister about funding part of that

institution. She has said that most of her funds come

from local people. The Home is very quiet and the

surroundings are kept neat and clean. I have promised

to her that I will donate some amount towards her

Home. She has given me the phone number of her Home

and encouraged me that I can bring destitute to her

Home in future too.

I have paid Rs. 100/- to the auto fellow and Rs. 50/-

to both the constables for them to go to their police

station (I have promised that I will take care of

their transportation). I came home at 17:00 hrs,

removed my clothes, kept them for wash and took hot

water bath. At 17:30 hrs I have had my lunch.

Yesterday night I have had some sense of satisfaction.

[saibabanews] An incredible Manava Seva...

Sincere thanks to Ravi Yemula for sharing your experience as a lesson for all

'saibabanews' family what brought you and us (through yours story-telling)

closer the spiritual essence (unity) of existence.

Allow me mention TFTD 25, Dec 2003, what as courage human beings to perform

actions for the sake of others. Really it is not 'for others', but for harmony

of unite atmic reality, what part human beings are.

"Jesus sanctified his body by sacrificing it for saving others. He was

conscious of that supreme purpose and duty. With faith in the oneness of

humanity, he stood against his opponents and critics and withstood their

onslaughts. Every saint and prophet who strove to uplift the downtrodden and

open the eyes of those blind to the splendour of God, was ready and willing for

the ultimate sacrifice. One has to welcome trouble as it provides a chance for

sacrificing everything for upholding Truth and righteousness. Regard yourselves

as embodiments of Love and dedicate your lives, like Jesus did, to the service

of your fellow men." (Thought for the day as written at Prasanthi Nilayam

today25th December 2003, Christmas).

Mother Teresa in action and reaction to the needy and trasformation based on

Bhagawan's teachings; this is one of the greatest Seva which supercedes all

other aspects of our spiritual activities. This story should go into the seva

magazines and shown to people that there is somebody who did something about

this women rather than a passerby and mere witness. Sister, bless your heart as

Swami will give you bountyful of blessings in return and may his abundance grace

be upon you.
