Guest guest
Makara Sankranthi - 2004 Report The festival of Makara Sankranthi is a joyous occasion when farmers celebrate their bountiful harvest and pay their gratitude to the Lord for showering His benedictions on them. It also heralds the northward movement of the sun in the skies, which signifies the Godward journey of the intellect. For the students of Bhagavan’s institutions, it is all the more reason to celebrate, as it is on this day that Bhagawan rewards them for their efforts on the field during the previous weeks and distributes prizes to the winners. 15th of January this year saw the Valedictory ceremony of the Annual Sports and Cultural Meet being held at the Sai Kulwant hall. The programme had five speakers addressing the gathering before Bhagavan’s Divine Discourse. The first speaker was Sri. S.V. Giri, the Vice-Chancellor of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning. He pointed out that this year’s sports meet was unique in that the themes of all the presentations had their basis in Vedic injunctions, and very eruditely explained the significance of some passages from the Upanishads. This was followed by talks by Padmashri Prof. G. Venkatraman, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Institute and by Sri. K. Chakravarthi, the Secretary of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. Then, it was the turn of two students, Miss. Bhavani a final year student of the B.A. (Hons.) Course from the Anantapur Campus and Sri Prashanth Dikshit, a student of MBA from the Prasanthi Nilayam campus of the Institute. They spoke about how the grand display that is the Sports Meet is possible only because the students have Bhagavan behind them giving them the all strength, protection and support they need. Bhagavan, then very graciously gave His Divine Discourse. He stressed that it is very necessary that the modern day education be grounded in spirituality, so that children’s minds may be moulded in the proper manner. After the Discourse, it was time for the prize distribution ceremony. Bhagavan, with a happy smile lighting up His Divine countenance, presented trophies to all the campuses, praising their performance as He did so. He then blessed all the medals and shields to be given away as prizes to the winners in the various sports and cultural items held during the year. After arati was offered to Bhagavan, He retired to His residence.
