It is present to enable man to transcend the physical and mental planes and reach for the divine. Ordinary life consists of matter and mind. But, matter plus being is beyond mind. The mind attracts many objects that it sees. It promotes a variety of qualities, attitudes and attachments. Above all, it encourages the inflation of the ego.
